MAAP is the way to go. Because of their videos, I dive deep into the world of cycling, and after three years I was quite lucky to obtain couple of their products - from longleeves, jerseys, bibs to accessories etc - all got on sale. Even they have a discount codes form Strava challenges. as for their products, is a top notch in quality and in design. highly recommended. TOP!

PNS quality is not there for the price tag. Design wise they are not innovators - minimalist kit was present independently of PNS. In this field visually MAAP is much more interesting choice, while structurally and technically many other brands are innovating and experimenting to make cycling kit more comfortable and functional to use. What they are great at is marketing. Their rise coincided with "quiet luxury" trend in general fashion and it feels like, that their approach is to become Loro Piana of cycling. And there is a particular type of person, who gravitates towards exclusivity. But I'd rather praise functionally innovating and more accessible brands. God bless Castelli and Velocio for drop-tail technology in women bibs.

we should make the world a better place by putting people on bikes for sport, commuting, travelling. PNS represents the elitism that is preventing this from happening by shaming newcomers and their affordable bikes and gear.

It´s worth to mention also regarding pricing and attitude...the materials used but most importantly where the pieces are made is actually a great part of the steep prices. The pieces are all designed in house, everything is done either in Portugal or Japan with highly skilled manufacturing in low batches (no mass factories in some god forsaken place in Asia, in who knows what conditions). One can even argue that because of the latter, their carbon footprint, on purpose or not, makes them pretty sustainable, the only question is the lifespan of the garments and their warranty could be better or offer a buy back or repair program...regarding the punk ethos, DIY they have it in loads and do whatever they want and in this day and age who is more Punk...someone who shells 200 bucks for some shorts and it´s the only pair that uses everytime until its destruction or someone that shell 200 euros for 5 pairs of shorts of mainstream brands of different colors, with questionable manufacturing, for each day of the week, and let me get just one more because its sale and its cheap? The problem of Satisfy is not the price or the brand, it´s everyone used to having it cheap on a stale industry...And that´s why brands like them, Soar, Norda and the likes will thrive...best example On Running explosion on the last couple of years, came up with one or two models of shoes completely leftfield and now they are a monster...And if you are wondering FYI I´m not a Satisfy fanboy, don´t own their pieces...I´m just interested in business models in retail outdoor and I´m a punk =)

At the end of the day Pas is stylish. Cycling to the general population has, for as long as I can remember, a reputation for making people looking goofy and lame in bright colors, with logos plastered everywhere, etc. PAS went on a mission to revoke those stereotypes. People buy PAS because they like how it looks. Fabrics, materials, all that discussion aside, I wear it because it's my favorite from a color, comfort, and functionality standpoint, and tbh, if you have $250 to spend on bibs, you're probably okay spending $50 more to get the colors and look you want. Props to PAS. People hate them, which means they've been very successful at creating their own market.
@d.pettitt10 күн бұрын
Totally agree-PAS nailed the balance between style, comfort, and performance. They’ve made cycling gear aspirational in a way that feels fresh and modern, without the overly loud “tour billboard” aesthetic. The fact that people either love or hate them just proves they’ve carved out a unique space. It’s about more than just function; it’s about identity and confidence on the bike. And yeah, if you’re already investing in quality gear, spending a bit more for something that makes you feel good while riding is worth it. Props to PAS for shaking things up!

I'm gonna sound off on this because this video kind of pissed me off. Sorry in advance for the word vomit. brands SHOULD NOT be creating culture, as you put it. It makes me cringe because having worked for a brand that "created culture" for its niche, I can tell you that it is ABSOLUTELY about selling more product and not about "creating community" or whatever their marketing tells you. Those group rides they organize are straight up marketing events trying to influence you to remain brand loyal. I'll mention quickly that Toyota has a cult following because it builds great cars. They just work and they last 5 ever. You can read shit online about PNS clothing falling apart after several rides. Yes, they are stylish, I'll give it that, but as a consumer, I value long lasting gear. I'm willing to pay a high price for it. At the end of the day, I don't really care about associating with the brand. Build a great product and I'll buy it. I've seen shoddy craftsmanship on PNS jerseys friends have purchased and for that reason alone, I won't buy anything from them.
@d.pettitt14 күн бұрын
no need to apologize. Your perspective is valid, and I get where you’re coming from. The line between authentic community-building and marketing can definitely blur, especially when brands are ultimately about driving sales. As for durability, that’s a key point. Stylish design only goes so far if the product doesn’t hold up. Toyota’s a great example-build quality and reliability foster loyalty without the need for overt “culture creation.” Thanks for sharing your experience-it’s an important angle to consider!
@jrgenhelland287418 күн бұрын
Good read of the fashion and creative side of the brand. You might be underplaying the community aspect, though. A lot of experienced cyclist hate it, but I think it is safe to say that PNS do pull more people into cycling and they do it by looking better, offering a simple way of connecting (just buy the kit and show up) and continuously telling a relevant story. As far as I know, every PNS shop runs a significant community program. It’s not a new play at all (people have been riding together since the Dawn of the bike, cafes have welcomed group rides forever), but they attract new people (and some traditionalists too). Another points with PNS is the “almost never on sale”, the constant visual innovation (mastering the drip tactics for product launches). All things considered; PNS seems to be among the winners. That is well done in a saturated market. My bet is that they will win even more through mastering adjacent categories, increasing owned distribution and remain profitable.
@d.pettitt14 күн бұрын
Great points! You're spot on about the community aspect-I could've highlighted that more. PNS does an excellent job pulling people into cycling through approachable group rides and community programs. Their “never on sale” strategy and drip launches are genius too. In a crowded market, they’re definitely standing out. Thanks for the insight!

While I enjoyed the video, I think the title really oversells the case since cycling is still pretty much cycling even with very expensive fashion clothing. Although I don't own any of their products, I would give Rapha credit for two decades of being a cycling lifestyle company, with offerings of subtle premium clothing, accessories, books, videos, events and stories, clubs etc., and from the beginning sold direct to consumers via the Internet. It began as a response to garish team kit being most of what was available. Rapha has clearly inspired a veritable horde of imitators selling clothing even more expensive than theirs. Assos should also be given recognition as the first cycling clothing company to really focus on performance materials. Disclaimer: I have ridden for decades, own 11 bikes and have masses of cycling kit about which I have no feelings of insecurity.
@d.pettittАй бұрын
@@lesliereissner4711 I agree, Rapha definitely had a huge part to play in cycling culture, but I do think in the past few years PNS has had something to do in a slight cultural shift with cycling (maybe that’s within my circle or understanding). First off, really like the video style, looks super professional for 4 (now 5 ;) followers). About PNS, I think they're stylish, modern and trendy. They draw new attention to the sport and make it more fashionable, it gains more traction. This brings new people to the sport that like the 'aesthetic', and if there's one thing this sport needs through the ranks, then its more and new people. Does that mean their prices are justified? Definitely not, they are totally overpriced for the technical aspect, since there's no cutting edge technology like aero benefits or similar, but purely style. Now it is with that like it is in the whole world of fashion, if it looks good, its expensive, doesnt mean you have to buy it, but the people that it appeals to, are also willing to drop major bank on some jerseys. Its like S-Works, are they overpriced, yes, do they look good, hell yeah.

@@d.pettitt Agree that it ruins the sport. Since 2020 there has been a proliferation of cycling instagram posers who wear this, and SYN, and Rapha, etc. I have no objection to premium products or high price tags. The issue with these brands is that they claim to be "clubs". Buying expensive kit with some words on it does not make you an elite rider or part of a "movement", and it seems like everyone has been tricked into thinking it does. Regarding other brands - Red White bib shorts (cheap and excellent quality), and any 20 dollar jersey from ali express are the way to go.
