Love this video. I clicked on it because I 100% related to the title. I recently was at a bar that was playing vinyl records. And the bar has a record store built into it. I spent 20 minutes talking to the guy in the record shop and found myself down a rabbit hole. 2 months later I have a collection of 55 records and a portable record player and a set of speakers. The kicker is that I live full time on the road in my van. All of this music travels with me. I have absolutely loved the entire experience of being hands-on and intentional with my music shopping and listening. Going to buy records is so fun. Coming home to listen to them is so fun. Just sitting to listen to music is so fun. Learning to appreciate an ENTIRE album front to back is so fun. We have lost so much touch with this experience. And I have loved bringing it back into my life. Thanks for making this video.

Own your music. Either save digitally off-platform or burn to CD. So tired of ads, so tired of listening to what the algorithm thinks is best. I just switched to a flip phone and I’m transferring media to cassette. No cords, no fumbling for the skip button. I’m rejecting the future made for me by the empty suits. I’m taking my life back.

If anyone else is having trouble purchasing digital copies, there's other options besides itunes! itunes would probably be the easiest way to purchase if you use apple music already. Others that I use are: Qobuz- You can get some of the highest quality versions of songs if offered and Qobuz has almost the exact same library as Spotify. When you make an account with Qobuz you can also sync your Spotify library with them to make finding the songs you listen to easier to buy. Qobuz is kind of pricey. Some albums are almost the exact same cost as buying a hard copy or more, but that trade off is usually the digital copy offered is technically better than the CD copies. (Not all the time and that's not really something that matters if you intend to just listen on your pc, phone, or a mp3 player) (oh and qobuz also has a streaming app, but ngl it's ass... i still pay $12 a month for it tho) Foreign artists are almost non-existent :'( 7Digital- Not as expansive as Qobuz, but is definitely cheaper. Same thing as Qobuz, you can buy hifi versions of songs, biggest con with 7digital is their library just isn't as good. You can find a lot of older artists on there or foreign artists which is cool! Bandcamp- Mentioned in the video and honestly the most direct way to buy music. Kind of hard and expensive to buy big artist's music on Bandcamp, but if you listen to indie artists most then Bandcamp is amazing. Bandcamp takes a really low cut of the sales so with bandcamp the artist gets almost all the proceeds. One of my favourite parts is they give you a shit ton of download file type options, including hifi and even the most basic forms more compact than mp3 files. Crazy nice option to have! Bandcamp is probably the best one I've used since the artists I usually buy for are indie artists which are harder to find on larger sites or I'd just rather they get more money. CDs- You can rip your CDs! Best of both worlds if you already have CDs or have regular access to a irl media store! Windows and IOS have default apps for burning CDs that have super straight forward processes. You will need a disc drive to hook up to your PC, but you can get really good ones for under $50 and even a cheap $20 one is fine. Make sure it's a disc drive/usb player that has the capability to burn/rip CDs, or "Writable". (I have a Dell DW316) Cool bit about ripping CDs is you can rip any CD, so if a friend or someone you know has a CD you can ask to grab a download from them! THEN you're sharing the music experience :D

Thanks so much for this extensive feedback!! This kind of information-sharing is exactly why I wanted to put this video out. Easy to feel like mindlessly scrolling spotify is the only way, but its really not!! Though it does take a bit of a mind shift to get back to buying music these alternative ways. I know my brother and I looked into Qobuz a bit when I started this journey, might be worth looking into again.

Fun fact: Did you know that the main instrumental part in this song was sampled from a disco song from the 1970s called More More More by Andrea True? Check it out, it comes in the middle of the tune.

Hi i highly recommend pirating as a solution to the problems you stated at the start! sounds counterproductive but hear me out. Pirating has a bunch of knock-on effects that actually get you in the habit of supporting artists! For example, since starting to pirate my own music i gained: - Intentionality and artist exposure: I have been more consciously finding music, since I have to manually choose and download everything - meaning my listening is more curated and intentional (plus artists who you wouldve never found get the exposure they deserve :)) - You'll remember artists you like!: when sorting music, tagging them with metadata, and curating your digital collection, you'll get so familiar with artist names, album names, and spelling for everything. - You'll connect with your music: the process of creating and maintaining a digital collection makes me feel a lot more connected with my music and it visualises it in a way streaming doesn't. it's the same when i look at my cd collection. - You'll support artists: I regularly now buy albums on bandcamp if I cannot find them for free (which equals out to around $9-ish per week ). - More exciting: The hunt for albums i want becomes exciting! It's so satisfying to find an album or find methods of downloading or get invites to private trackers. - Theres so much more personalisation - get ready to choose your preferred album cover, album edition, and curate your favourite artist's library to only include the stuff you like Here are some tips: - Peer to peer file sharing is essential: it has (nearly) everything and since you are required to share your music collection, it will make you more motivated to organise it - Public trackers are good for more known artists: rutracker is my favourite - YT-dlp for music from youtube - there are spotify and soundcloud downloaders online if you're desperate and cant find it anywhere else - get an ssd not a hhd harddrive - always have a backup! there are freeware backup programs - mp3 tag is a freeware program for tagging your music

Wow, what a wonderful video this was to find. I’ve been on a similar journey, removing myself from streaming and going back to physical media and CDs. I’ve been enjoying music now more than I have in years! Exact Audio Copy is an excellent way to rip your CDs into digital versions by the way! I subscribed :)

I love being able to see all the stats on iTunes as well haha.

Hi, Your Oh Susanna video popped up when I was looking for some Stephen Foster banjo arrangements. Pretty cool considering it was 14 years ago. Anyway, nice work, even now. I can easily relate to your frustrations with social media - good and bad. I would say its better to be lost in a crowd than it is to not exist. Keep up the good work! Cheers!

Fantastic video. Here’s my experience: I signed up for Apple Music in 2019, this wasn’t going to replace my 500 (or thereabouts) cds nor stop me buying albums I’ve discovered on physical media if I really liked them. So streaming became an expense ‘on top’ of buying music, not a cost effective alternative. Another point, I was adding studio albums to my streaming library by artists with whom I only owned a partial discography, often just a compilation. This act became very unceremonious, building up a backlog of “must get round to listening to those 10 Bruce Springsteen titles”. Buying music makes me more selective and the cost means a slower rate of acquiring titles, which is more rewarding. I cancelled Apple music streaming a while back.
@BaileySuttonMusic3 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! Good on you for keeping the album purchasing alive. Lately I have been feeling like maybe I have "failed" this experiment as I don't find myself listening to as much music these days. But I do feel like I have been more intentional about the music I have been listening to, which like you said has definitely felt more rewarding. Will probably make an updated video about it in the future, but thanks so much for sharing your story! Love to hear about people breaking the mould when it comes to music streaming.
