First of all, so-called "Hal Linden" was not his real name. There was absolutely nothing wrong with her birth name Harold Lipshitz. Most likely the name change was the result of pressure from a greedy Business Manager or Studio, with the idea of perceived greater recognition and possible monetary gain?! The business of changing one's birth name is the ultimate insult towards your parents & heritage. The ONLY time a name change should happen is when a woman gets married. If a married women DOESN'T change her last name, then that's an insult to her husband.

Thank you to whoever posted this. I’ve always loved Neil Sedaka’s version, but this is just as tender and sweet. Never knew Hal Linden had such a great voice. Thank you again. I miss the hungry years. 🙏❤

Very moving performance, thanks for posting. "Parody" in the title is a bit misleading. I'm glad it didn't put me off watching it.

"The Fun was getting there" how wise. I Can't recall who said "the thing worse than getting 'your Heart's delight, is getting your Heart's delight' ". As this song implies, sometimes the seeking and grafting does, with hindsight, give the greatest pleasure.

Wow! Hal Linden was a Broadway star before Barney Miller. What a great male voice. Love Neil Sedaka's version and don't think he'd object to these lyrics - both poignant and relevant to the message, one so many of us can relate to, sadly. Awesome performance Barney. Sorry I hadn't heard it before now.

Just beautiful. The way he tells it in this song. I am 69 years old this 2021 and I can feel what he is singing from the "Hungry Years" of Neil Sedaka. Just beautiful.

Hal Linden did several musicals on Broadway and in 1971 won a Tony Award for the musical The Rothschilds. His Billy Crocker in Anything Goes (1962 revival) is a recording worth listening to. Thank you for posting this video.
