This brings tears to my eyes, it's so true, we made do with anything and didn't crave anything exotic. Happy years!

Neil Sedaka wrote and performed it. It was a very good song. Somehow I was waiting for something like this to be done on this song/topic and Hal Linden knocked it out of the park. It's a sad song and it does have a special meaning to me because my Mom said it was a special song she liked , because her and Dad went through this songs topics. It was tough, but the struggles are the bonds that keep you together, protected and strong. Too bad today we're losing that meaning in our lives. Thanks Hal you got to me with this rendition. Thank you.

Wow! Hal Linden was a Broadway star before Barney Miller. What a great male voice. Love Neil Sedaka's version and don't think he'd object to these lyrics - both poignant and relevant to the message, one so many of us can relate to, sadly. Awesome performance Barney. Sorry I hadn't heard it before now.

Just beautiful. The way he tells it in this song. I am 69 years old this 2021 and I can feel what he is singing from the "Hungry Years" of Neil Sedaka. Just beautiful.

Hal Linden at 81 is amazing! We saw his hour long live show last night at the McCallum in Palm Desert and he had the sold out crowd on their feet with a standing ovation not once but twice. Yes there is life after retirement! Watch a part of his great show now

First, Neil Sedaka on the radio, reminding me of an even earlier time, now Hal Linden, changing the words to something even closer to more recent times. Setting up housekeeping in three rooms and bath---with no furniture, then cooking on a 2-burner electric hotplate because the kitchen range was absent for the first few weeks. And we were sleeping on a secondhand folding couch, that was cheap to begin with, because the water ran out of the shower into the bedroom and out through a hole rotted in the floor---and then having to move the couch when one leg went through the floor in the living room. But we had each other, beautiful sunny days, chilly summer nights when we cuddled together for warmth... We were rich only in family and friends and music from radio and stereo and pure, unleavened happiness.

This isn't a parody; it's a very personal re-write of the lyric. And it's brilliant......

Very moving performance, thanks for posting. "Parody" in the title is a bit misleading. I'm glad it didn't put me off watching it.

I saw Hal Linden do a brief act on stage in a PBS program, perhaps the Boston Pops or something like that. It was many years ago. I've been a fan ever since. Really made an impression on me.

"The Fun was getting there" how wise. I Can't recall who said "the thing worse than getting 'your Heart's delight, is getting your Heart's delight' ". As this song implies, sometimes the seeking and grafting does, with hindsight, give the greatest pleasure.

A class act. What a talented guy. I grew up watching him act, sing, play sax, and of course, Barney Miller. I wish I had been at this show. Here’s someone I would have wanted for a friend. Just always seemed so nice and kind.

I never knew he could sing. Sounds like he's done Broadway.
@Rusty36597 жыл бұрын
His big break was on Broadway. He was Sidney Chaplin's understudy in Bells Are Ringing. Sidney Chaplin and Judy Holiday took a vacation to England, where he introduced her to his father. After they returned to Bells Are Ringing, all of a sudden they were like ice bergs back stage. The friction between the two got so bad, that he left Bells Are Ringing and was replaced by Hal Linden. It made Hal Linden a Broadway star. But his biggest Broadway play was still a few years away. He played the lead in The Rothchilds and that's what brought him the biggest recognition of his career to that point.
