10 years ago I played a lot of JRPGs. Now I am having a lot of trouble enjoying them. Believe it or not, one big issue I now have is that JRPGs have a very PG and unrealistic combat and combat animations. A massive difference from say, a Wasteland 3, Baldur's Gate 3 or The Witcher 3.

The director, clearly, used a model that has been demonstrated to him by someone whose been making successful games his whole life. Another thing that has appeal and a love for this game is making the player feel like a kid again. I've watched several streams of KZbin creators playing this game, who normally have foul mouths, but playing this, it's like it reverts them back to being a kid again and oddly enough, they're not cursing up a storm. With childhood comes innocence. A being that isn't quite smart enough to fall subject to the environment and culture around them as easily so simple things make them smile. Again, you can have a little kids whose parents are fourth mouthed sailors BUT, the kid automatically knows better and won't talk like that. Born sinners? No, we're products of our environment. My point is, there's nothing political in this game. There's nothing political in Mario, Zelda, Kirby, or even Metroid. It's conservative views. Take Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog's new game, HECK! ANYTHING BY NAUGHTY DOG TODAY and it's all filled with politics and woke views, that angers people. They don't want to be preached too. If they religion they'll go to a church. They want a political lecture they're go sit in that kind of meeting. Gamers want to escape the world that sucks, not be told how someone else wants the gamer to view people like them with an agenda. That's what games are becoming and we're letting developers use the words ITS AN ART FORM or it's EXPRESSION OF MY INNER SELF. We don't care! We want to play a game. You're here to entertain me. You can have a deep story without the politics. That's the problem. Neil Druckmann already has a problem with his own people around him not liking him for his nationality, he doesn't need to make it worse by attacking and villainizing what they see as valuable and important because he as, a minority perhaps, wants to yell and scream for them to confirm to him, it's not gonna work that way in a majority state. We're all put in those kinds of situations in life where tolerance isn't going to prevail. It hasn't for millenia and you won't make it now. You just conform and learn to live in what you have, that's life, that's being an adult. Not throwing a fit tantrum and threatening everyone to see it your way by destroying their community through violence and destruction, that's not how it's ever worked. That's why this game succeeds. It's simple. It's innocence. It's unbiased. It's not political

@spinnenlile I'm not a huge fan of the "the bad guy we've been building up isn't really the bad guy here's a new one!" Twist. Having to face more underlings, or having more significant competition from the other candidates would have gone a long way to enhance the narrative. It felt like the whole crown competition got thrown out after the first event in favor of Louis.

I think literally all of your 2024 top 5 are in my top 10 for the year (and all your non-2024 are on my shortlist). Metaphor being the only exception as I am only about 10 hours in so I can't quite put it in the top 10 yet (but I am sure it will end up there). I am really enjoying metaphor so far! One thing I am enjoying over Persona 3 Reload is the flip of how weakness attacks work. Adding an attack to your turn rather than taking away an attack from an enemy turn like in P3R feels like such a more balanced way to handle that system. Can't wait to see how the story turns out. I still want to get to a couple more games before I make my 2024 GOTY video/list. Next up is Indiana Jones, Black Myth Wukong, and Nine Sols if I have the time somehow. Right now my top 3 for 2024 are FF7 Rebirth, Balatro, and Shadow of the Erdtree. I have really enjoyed your videos this year! You talk to your thoughts well and explain what feels good and bad in each game in a way that feels authentic. Good luck in 2025!

Mega late to this but if you haven't played it already, play Travis Strikes Again. Imo it's one of, if not, the most important game in the series. It's a really good ride throughout the whole thing. The story in it is much better than 3. Travis in 3 felt sorta like...not really Travis if that makes any sense. Especially after playing TSA where he does a lot of self reflecting and introspection. In TSA you really peek into the mind of travis and how he's developed as a character and as a person and it's wonderful. There's a maturity to Travis's personality in TSA that is absent in 3. Feels like he lost a good chunk of braincells going into NMH 3. I can't say 3 is a good game at all. Personally, it's my most hated game in the series. Play TSA, it's got an incredible story. AND it's coop so you can grab a buddy to coop it too sometime lol.

As someone who's really bad at combat games but still loves Zelda games, I loved this one. I almost never used my Link power. For me the most used Echo was the Waterblock to go up quickly 😂 And I was 2 dungeons in when my friend told me the beds could be used to refill my hearts 😅😂 And I realized after few friends told me about their gameplay that yes we do become repetitive with the echoes we personally used but we all played the game differently and had different favourite echoes!

5:52 - Well, there are a few ways to help with that... at least a bit. You mentioned 1, the Idler's Alert, that calls Pikmin not doing anything to the location you used it. There's also the Homesick Signal, which calls _all_ Pikmin, regardless of what they're doing, to your base. Lastly, there's Oatchi. You can always split off from him and treat him like a 2nd Captain. If you level up his Command skill, you can tell him to Come to You/Your Base, similar to the Pikmin, and have both him and yourself automatically go wherever you point to on the map. Level that up again and you can tell Oatchi to just Gather Pikmin for you, then return to your location. (Which, if I recall, updates as you move, rather than being at the exact spot you used it.) It may not be as robust as you were thinking there, but I'm sure more can still be done with that in mind.

My critiques for the game is. Backtracking isn't fun like in 2d games. In metroid prime you are slow and have no dash or shinesparking ability. you also have not quick fast travel options like for example telleporters which resulted in going from one side of the map to the become a huge chore. Most metroidvanias have fast travel because they known that the player can only take so much tedious Backtracking. Great examples of amazing Backtracking is Hollow Knight, in that game you can fast travel on specific points all over the map which results in much faster travel times. It doss not trivialize Backtracking because it only works more like a bus stop and not a taxi so you will have to take the rest of the way on foot. Metroid prime really needed something like that become going from one side of the map to the other is such a miserable experience, especially with constantly respawning enemies all ower the place.
@capn_sarge
@capn_sarge 27 күн бұрын
Yeah I think map traversal is the biggest thing that doesn't translate as well from 2D to 3D. It is much harder to orient yourself with the map which is only made worse when there's a lot of cross map traversal. It can feel like you need to pull out the map every time you go into a new room sometimes and really lengthen the traversal

I love the diverse combat of echoes and the ability to aid your summoned creatures with sword, bombs, and bows. I, too, enjoyed the abilities that improved your combat weapons damage and energy duration. The only thing that I can see that is lacking is the length of the game. It ends, too quickly. Even when doing the side quests, the actual length of the game left me feeling that there should have been more temples and dungeons.

I agree the game did feel like it was over right as it was really getting going but I also think they ran out of enemies and movement echoes too. So many late game enemies are enemies you already met earlier, just stronger. So I can see why they didn't want to stretch it much further

The game does have a double jump? The platforming never gets too demanding anyway. If you didn't position yourself well, you just recover. You can't expect to always succeed whenever you're playing a game. You can also point the camera down when jumping, if it helps. The combat is fine. It's a pretty good 3D take on Metroid combat. You're supposed to be constantly charging your beam and finding opportunities to shoot missiles. The strafing helps you avoid damage. Even with the original tank controls, the targeting system does a lot of the heavy lifting. Combat is never hard, let alone unfair. If you felt you "couldn't do anything about" waves of enemies, then, sincerely that is a skill issue. Honestly I fail to see how this game didn't age well. If anything this remaster proved how well the original game holds up, they barely changed anything! It's not a proper FPS game so comparing it to something like Borderlands or Call of Duty isn't necessary. Metroid Prime is unique, taking an action platformer and turning into a 3D game. It's its own thing. I'm typing this out as I'm watching and--- whoa whoa wait. The controls aren't poor. Get out of here with that. If you don't like them, or you suck at the game, that does not make the controls bad. The tank controls of the original were fine, and the modern dual-stick controls are like butter. They're not poor. I'm not nostalgic for this game whatsoever, I was 19 when I first played it. When they announced the remaster I downloaded it immediately. It's a great game, not because everyone but you is a sheep and is just pretending, no. Because it's good. People like things for a reason.

This game is a bitch with keyboard and mouse as to parry you have an extremely hard time being able to use the mouse to get the directional block and without a better chance of getting stun (green parry) you will suck at it. Captain here once again is using a controller to play this game because he is not getting the (E) key to go into the cutscene to cut off the body part targeted, try it with a mouse and see what I mean. So...ya you can play it on PC but you will never get a fighting chance without using the thumb joy stick to set the direction, I literally have to slide the mouse more than a few inches in the direction of the blow to get a green, doing repeated over head strikes and my mouse has shoved itself up enough to leave the mouse pad. The secondary issue is it takes rolling the middle mouse button to target the limb, only with the mouse for some reason after targeting the right arm (to get the weapon) it automatically shifts to another appendage, and the targeting has to be redone. I count how many times I have had to attack the same guard to get a chest armor piece because the targeting shifted and I didn't cut the "Body" chest piece, if you are not comfortable with playing with a controller, this game will be a Bitch. NICE.
