We live on a high traffic road with a footpath going along the front of our Home, we have four sprinklers, trouble is, morons walking past, enjoy kicking them and snapping them all the time, have to repair and replace at least 6 times a month Any suggestions, to stop them breaking and snapping off inside the main pipe? Cheers
@cupchangerАй бұрын
Sorry to hear of your troubles, I have been in those shoes before. I have 2 suggestions. If the heads are installed with a swing joint, like the one in the video, it will limit the extent of the damage to just the sprinkler head. The second suggestion, adjust the start time for that station so it runs when there is less traffic walking past while they are running. In my area, 2 am is the best time to run zones receiving damage from foot traffic.

poor explanation of how it works...typical from guys who say its so "easy"...yeah its easy for them that already know how it works, but then they do a lousy job of explaining it. The solenoid plunger is in a down position when valve is closed an in that down position it closes and opening hole that would drain the top of the diaphragm area. When the valves is electrically turned on that makes a metal plunger in the solenoid go up and uncover the opening that drains the water pressure from the top diaphragm and thus the diaphragm is pushed upwards by the line pressure and water flows thru and down the pipe to your sprinkler.

Got a question if possibly know the answer? Hooked up my 3 solenoids, 2 work fine when ran by themselves but the third runs when any other station is turned on, including the front 2 stations (seperate to the 3 I have connected), not a wiring issue as have checked its all definitely correct and no damage to cable underground or anything (checked via continuity), could it possibly be a faulty solenoid or am I missing something??
@cupchanger3 ай бұрын
More than likely that zone is hooked up to the pump connection. It is generally the connection adjacent to zone 1 in the controller wiring. The pump connection is activated whenever another zone is turned on. Often the controller numbering label doesn’t make this error apparent. To fix this you would just move the wire down from this slot to zone 3 or move all wires 1 slot to the right if they need to stay in order.
@jparkerbrookss19723 ай бұрын
@@cupchanger again, have checked continuity so don’t believe it’s a wiring issue. Black wire is in the common and then I believe the green wire (which is the colour I’m using for that station) is in the zone 4. Unless it matters which of the two wires you connect it to at the solenoid but I thought they were transposable?
@jparkerbrookss19723 ай бұрын
@@cupchangersomething else I haven’t tried is just changing it to a different zone to see if maybe that zone is faulty?

Solenoids can be wired either direction since they are an electro magnet, unless it is a battery operated controller. In that case the solenoid is directional.

Great tutorial...i do have a question...i have 3 valves in the irrigation box...however i wanted to add a 4th & 5th zone down the yard. How do you wire so Value #3 is open when 4th needs to open and then same for 5th valve. Essentially valve #3 is acting as a master for #4 and #5.
@cupchanger4 ай бұрын
The #3 valve can be wired to the pump start on the controller. Assuming #3 doesn’t have heads on it and is only acting as a master valve. Most controllers have a pump start.

Amazing. A video that makes since. I am desperate for help. Two of my four zones are low pressure. I have dug up pipes, no leaked. Cleaned sprinkler heads. No debris. Changed to solenoid. STILL LOW. Only difference I am seeing, last person to work on it spliced two of the wires that come from the timer to my valves for two zones. The wires were too short for him to work with. Coincidentally, those are the two zones that are low pressure. Is there any chance, though the wires of the same colors, he’s spliced the wrong Gauge? I know that sounds stupid, but I’m gonna loss. The wire come from coming from the tire look more like skinny pens. The wire that he spliced to extend it, look more like a group of silver small tiny skinny wires. Believe it or not, I know a lot about this system from fixing it all these years. A nightmare system. One Zone three heads. Another, 11!!! Who does that. This week, I dug most of the big “bad” zone up and moved a coupe of heads to a different zone that makes more sense. Pressure picked up, but not the issue. Help!!! My hands hurt. My back Is killing. I am so over this. Please help me.
@cupchanger4 ай бұрын
There is an easy way to test to see if electrical is causing the issue. Turn the valve on by using the bleed screw or by twisting the solenoid 1/2 turn counter clockwise. If the pressure is still bad, the problem is hydraulic, not electric. If your valves have a flow control stem in the center make sure it is turned on fully. This is a real common way people get restrictions, causing low pressure. This flow control stem is designed to reduce the flow after the valve.

Hi if my solenoid is new and has 2 black wires how can you tell Wich one is the common? If it’s facing me is it the left or right side I’m just trying to swap over from a champion solenoid to a lawn genie type
@cupchanger4 ай бұрын
Since a solenoid is an electro magnet, it doesn’t matter which way you wire them unless it is a battery operated timer. In that case it would need an entirely different solenoid. If your timer plugs into a wall socket or it is hard wired, you can wire the common to either wire and use the leftover wire as the control wire.

@@cupchangerI have 4 dedicated zones(2 front yard/2 backyard). My irrigation wire has 4 zone wires(green,white,blue,red). Is there no common wire in my system?🤔 Thanks!
@cupchanger22 күн бұрын
The system has to have a common wire or it won’t work. Most likely they ran one leg of the wire to the front yard and a separate independent set of the same wire to the back yard. The easiest way to tell is to check the wiring on the sprinkler controller and find the color that is wired into the common connector. You can also tell which one is the common by checking the valve wiring. Look for the wire that has a connection to both valves. There are other possibilities, but this is the most likely scenario.
@davidisaacson932821 күн бұрын
@cupchanger Haha! I should have know better! It's there...I just didn't remember that the common wire is it's own wire.

It be nice if they built water values with built in unions. Only issue I suggest. Put union nuts closest to value. I have had a number of nuts Crack in extreme weather. This way you can easily switch out nut side of union with station. Especially in very tie spaces.

I have 2 different colored wire bundles . White for front yard and black for back yard . I cannot get the rear yard valves to turn on. I am using the white wires from both bundles ( as the common wires ). My Orbit timer has no screws, but has little plastic push tabs that rock or toggle where you can insert the wire up into a hole beneath the little plastic toggles. The wires come loose at times ! I purchased this timer 3 months ago at Home Depot. What do you recommend ? I am using Rainbird valves 3/4 inch .
@cupchanger5 ай бұрын
You can use a short common jumper wire about 3 inches long to connect to the clock, then wire all 3 common wires together with a small wire nut. This will ensure a solid connection. The valves you have chosen are a good choice. If you are still having trouble you will have to troubleshoot with a multimeter. You want to check that you are getting voltage from the controller while the back yard stations are supposed to be running. It is low voltage AC somewhere between 22 and 55 volts. You can also check the ohms through the common wire and each station wire to ensure there isn’t a brake in the line.

Is this di-electric grease on the grease caps? Also, can I just insert wires inside the grease caps, then twist the wires or can that cause the wires to not work from the copper ends being greased. Or should I just twist the wires before inserting them inside the grease plugs and continue twisting the wires with the grease cap.
@markwebb36466 ай бұрын
This is improper. Simple easy solution with the same result is to leave your timer on, let it cycle as normal. Water supply has been turned off and water will drain the same as he is intending. In the spring, all you do is turn water on.

I would opt for using a slip fix or slip couplings. PVC is flexible enough to bend the pipe upwards and force it together if you are using couplings. You just have to dig back far enough to allow it to bend. The slip fix is easier to use for a first time repair or DIY.

Best practice is to give a slight turn after pushing if in all the way and then hold it for a few seconds, I'm sure the way you showed would work fine but it's better to spread the sealant so that it's covered evenly when bonding
@cupchanger7 ай бұрын
I used to do the same thing until I got PVC weld certified. That is where I learned that twisting is an outdated practice that can weaken the weld by rippling the PVC where it comes in contact with the joint. It won’t make any difference on joints 2 inches and smaller, but it can cause larger pipe welds to fail.

does it matter which of the red wires from the valves goes to the white common wire, the solenoid has on/off on the top and i assume each of the wires is for that specific function
@cupchanger7 ай бұрын
No it doesn’t matter. The solenoid is just an electric magnet that pulls a plunger up out of the valve body, no matter which way it is wired it is still a magnet. The on and off is a directional rotation that accomplices the same action.
