4bit = 4 steps, 8bit = 256 steps, 16bit =>65k steps, 24bit = >16.7m steps .... that is called resolution. Also, the dynamic range aspect comes into play with increased tracks and possible noise.

It's a common misunderstanding that samples are like pixels in a digital image. The notion that because samples are quantized, the signal can't take on any intermediate values. This intuitive understanding is incorrect; as I pointed out earlier, quantization adds noise. The original signal is still captured and is always present regardless of bit depth. Only the sampling rate determines the harmonic content ("detail") of the signal. Watch Monty's "Digital Show and Tell" around the 9:20 mark, where he lowers the bit depth, and the noise floor goes up but the sine wave he's sampling is still there unchanged.

Uhhh ... bit depth is all about resolution ... sample rate is all about bandwidth. Thanks for spreading misinformation ....
@nicksterj

Bit depth is about noise floor, and that's all. The output signal of 24-bit has the same "resolution" as 16 bits, just less noise. See Production Advice's video "The truth about bit-depth and digital audio resolution" for a practical demonstration!
@51bpm

@@nicksterj sorry ... this is just not true. Bit depth is indeed about resolution as well as noise floor. Funny how this is so misunderstood.
@nicksterj
@nicksterj 10 күн бұрын
@@51bpm You didn't watch the video I recommended, did you? The harmonic content of the signals nulls out perfectly, leaving only noise - meaning that the musical "detail" in the signals is equivalent. They sound exactly the same except for noise.
@nicksterj
@nicksterj 10 күн бұрын
Also watch Nigel Redmon's "Audio Dither Explained," where he shows how dithering preserves ALL the detail in the signal regardless of bit depth. There is effectively no resolution limit imposed. So no audible difference between a 24-bit signal and a dithered 16-bit signal.

Sony mdr 1A is the best headphones i ever owned nice base with no distortion and lightweight and very comfortable and sound great on a cheap small fiio amp. I still use the headphone for over 6 years well made and never had any problems with the sound. Sounds to me your used to tinny sound headphones but i like the low end headphones like the old days back in the 70's when speakers was made for low end for radio and valve tv sets today's headphones are on the high end frequencies lacking in base with to much treble

I have the same problem connecting my amp to the computer speakers using the 3.5mm audio out , I tried a cheap USB to 3.5mm DAC and it helped with the background noise. Sometimes I still get a quick buzz . I am going to try your little expensive gizmo , hope it eliminates the noise completely

I absolutely love this album not only for the comedy but the beautiful musicianship and production. Heidecker is a master of dry satire. If you enjoyed this album you should definitely check out "on cinema at the cinema" if you already haven't. Though I doubt anyone stumbled on this album without knowing about Heidecker's other projects. Also, great analysis. I have noone to really discuss the beauty of this album with so this was refreshing(though not so much as a tall hot glass of foamy piss).
