That inverter/charger is like my Quattro. Before I buy something else, I want to see if I can use the chargers I have .

Take a look at Eg 4 chargeverter for charging from 120 or 240 volt shore power or generator.

Ralph, Consider the external thrusters from Side Shift. You can install them yourself.

Hope to stay in sturgeon bay for a few days. I assume Frankie will have a project for me. Most important is to pray that the BMS comes in and works.

Ralph, I would highly recommend doing the Trent Severn. Doing it solo adds a bit more adventure. I would not do it solo without either a stern drive and/or thrusters. Having a remote around my neck for both stern and bow thruster was invaluable. A stern drive with only a bow thruster would work as well. You will hear many boaters claim they can maneuver their boats just fine with twin shaft drives and no thrusters. I would like to see them get into a lock with a cross wind pushing away from the wall and 3/4 other boats already in the lock. Just my opinion. I say go for it. 70 is not old.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Unfortunately for me, my boat is a single engine, and I can't justify the expense of adding thrusters that would amount to a good percentage of the total value of my 40 year old vessel. I can run her pretty well all by myself, but sometimes even getting back into my own slip is a bit of a struggle with the prevailing crosswind. Good luck on your journey, and I will continue to follow you along.

Been following your journey with great interest. I think electric boats are going to have to be the way of the future. Every time I fire up my 45 year old Lehman diesel I feel a twinge of guilt about how much greenhouse gas it must be spitting into the atmosphere. I thought I would ask you a question and hope you have a few minutes to respond. I'm a 70 year old guy, and I can see the end of my boating seasons looming closer. I would really like to do the Trent Severn waterway before I hang it up, but everyone is saying that you shouldn't try it solo. I have been watching you and a few other KZbinrs doing it so let me ask you this: - are you an old hand with lots of boat handling experience? - would you still do the trip if your boat was a single engine and had no thrusters? I noticed in this video you mentioned having some trouble with currents getting into a lock. Good luck on your travels, and thanks for taking us along for the ride.

Hi, for most of it the wiring diagrams are in my head. I have only gone to a marina once to charge. Other times a town wall for a few hours of free charging then anchor out. Most of the recharge is from the solar. On a good day, I get 3/4 kw of charging. Cloudy day like today, I get 1 kw. Wind turbines give 10 to 50 watts. Usually on the lower side. They are not worth the money. If possible, I am going to add 4 more solar panels like wings. Range is about 40 miles if I stick to 4 knots or less. So, long cruising days. Range is all based on speed and sun. No sun, then need to sit for a day or 2, or look for a town wall with power. Plugging in, plus solar can give a charge of 5/6 kw. Very fast. 8/10 hours of that, is pretty much a full charge. After doing this for almost 2 months now, the biggest lessons are: go slow, pray for sun, get more solar, or go to marinas. I do have a small propane generator for when I am really stuck or fighting a head wind. Head winds are very bad for range. Combine that with a few cloudy days and it’s time to start the generator or stop. Let me know if you have any other questions.

very nice! Do you have stats on how far and fast you can go? Do you just charge up at the marina each night? Would love to see electrical diagrams, grounding, charging, bow thruster and DC/DC conversion for electronics. Great work! Also, how did you get the motors and diesel tanks out? Did you consider keeping a diesel gen and small tank to increase range?
@BryansElectricTrawler
@BryansElectricTrawler 17 күн бұрын
Getting the diesels and tanks out was the biggest hurdle. I ended up removing as many components on the engines I could, removing the transmission and then using an engine hoist straddling the opening. Then rolled them to the salon floor, hoisted them again to a gang plank out the salon door, and a backhoe to drop them to the ground. Fuel tanks just fit out the salon floor opening. Those were handled by hand. I do not recommend doing all this alone. It’s a 2/3 person job.

I was told by more then one experienced person that the only way to make this work is to have a large diesel gen and have a hybrid system. I am in the process of disproving that idea. We will see if I make it. I have 10 months to go. At this time I am running on 5 batteries. Battery number 4 has a bad cell, so I have to remove it and get the cell replaced in early September. More to come on that.

Once on the ICW, at the Florida / Georgia border. Saint Mary's and Cumberland Island is a Must too. You can Bike, e bike and camp there. The Carnegie family Mansion ruins. Feral horses. It's romance novel beautiful. I've camped there twice and highly recommend it. Fresh water, showers at some of the campgrounds. I think boats anchor near plumb orchard and dinghy there ...

Fredrich, Thanks and hello for Canada and USA. I have 5 kw rated solar panels and on a good day get 4 kw. Most days closer to 3 kw. I need more and am considering 4 more panels like wings on the side. 4 kw is just under 3 knots of speed with no headwind. I really need to be able to maintain 4 knots on a sunny day. I am trying to figure out how to mount them so they can be easily folded down and secure for high wind or locks or tight spaces.

Kevin, it’s a matter of macgyver with what I had available. I may add weather stripping later. No need for wipers, just open half way and can see underneath when seated.

Curious about the design. Is this a combination of clever engineering and make do just to get through or are you working from plans? that will allow weather stripping and continuous upgrades. when it comes to the windows.

Had lots of headwind and 3 to 4’ choppy water all day yesterday. Today windy again, but tucked in behind some rocks. Very good sunny charging day. Ran the batteries yesterday done below 48 volts to try it. 2 went off line around 47.6 volts. Back on line as soon as I slowed down and let the sun charge a bit.
