No problem. I learned about through Distractible. Bob has it, and talks about it from time to time. So it's been interesting to hear about his experience with it. Since learning about it. It is something I don't think is brought up enough in the RPG space. Especially in the discussion of theater of the mind and maps. And you know, that is the ultimate irony as an artist, but makes it an even better encouraging story to tell others.

I personally hated this change, and I'd much rather just keep running berserker with the hb rule that it doesn't stack exhaustion. Having another attack as a bonus action never felt overwhelming at my tables, specially given everyone already considers drawing two swords for dual wielding as one interaction. BG3 actually did this Path really great by removing the need of strength base weapons AND removing the constraint of the exhaustion (and I will certainly pitch that to my players the next time they are making characters). It might also feel more frustrating (specially for new players who gravitate towards easier martial classes) when their "big damage" first hit keeps missing and they feel like they aren't using all their potential. I also dislike how it forces a certain playstyle. Wizards made an effort to decouple certain classes from set worldviews, so players can experiment with different themes, but now berserker HAS to be the madman attacking wildly. I mean, this is all flavor, but just feels an unnecessary step back. Sure, it's nice they are trying, but c'mon man, just give them the one extra attack, fighters and monks are losing count of how many times they are attacking each turn and my barbarians can't count to 3.

Berserkers are madmen attacking wildly, there the entire subclass fantasy
@ggwp638BC4 күн бұрын
@@DB-ku7vu That's kind of the problem, they AREN'T. The original berserkers were religious/cultist zealots who performed rituals to channel animal powers and fight furiously achieving supernatural strength and endurance. They would wear pelts of the animal they chose (usually bear, but boar and wolf were also recorded), and while they would fight in a trance, they were still fighting as proper warriors. Mad and super strong but not stupid. At least that's the historical and mythological basis. If anything, flavor wise, the Wild Heart path should be the berserker path. In Tolkien, berserkers can turn into beasts, at which point they do lose sanity, but that's also not really in line with DnD either. There is the Marvel version of "berserker rage", but it's more about Thor/whoever is in that state being so driven with rage they can't distinguish friend or foe, which also isn't part of DnD berserker. Famously we also have the Berserk manga, which is a lot closer to our version of the path, but Guts is not just swinging wildly at things, he is still a proper warrior. So, the berserker path is not the "berserker" fantasy. The Barbarian class is actually the "Berserker" class - you rage to channel magic powers to aid you in battle, tank a lot, deal a lo of damage. The berserker path is just a spin on it where instead of magic you enhance your body through sheet anger (ergo why thematically you'd get exhaustion from frenzy). Now, there is no problem with a berserker who loses all reason and keeps attacking and tanking like he doesn't care. No magic, just raw strength. That's a fantasy I feel a lot of people want to play. My problems with the change are: - Attacking less but doing more damage once is not delivering the idea of a ruthless beasts cleaving through the frontline. At least to me it feels way more interesting to be in frenzy delivering several blows with a big weapon, than swinging twice and passing. - Tying the path to this one particular fantasy (which is not true to the name and it's not even delivering that fantasy itself) is just less "freedom" to the player (it's DnD, we can all do whatever we want, but I'm specifically talking about what the book is incentivizing here, difference between "flavor how you want" and "this is the idea we are giving you"). The berserker path ends up even more diluted in concept with the barbarian class, while curbing other ways to imagine a berserker. As I said, Wizards are doing a lot to de-couple certain subclasses and classes from this pre-conceived fantasies. The idea is to allow the player a set background of abilities that they can apply their idea of a character onto. For example, they are pushing Monks away from being JUST religious south east based asian monks into more general martial artists. This isn't at the detriment of that fantasy, it's to more easily allow OTHER fantasies to coexist.

As a DM and a player, I think that the peasant railgun, might be fun to use once to resolve a very specific situation at the end of a campaign. However it’s something that I can only see myself using once because it not only sounds very silly but also epic, like something that might be a good solution to a problem in a game that is drawing it’s inspiration from something like Monty Python.
@LiteraryDM12 күн бұрын
You know, a Monty Python inspired game would be so fitting for the Peasant Railgun now that you mention it.

While D&D never intended for itself to depict physics accurately, there still seems to at least be an attempt to have the mechanics make sense with what you'd think would happen in the real world. Sure, fall damage and how it scales in the game is not accurate to how falling in real life works - but they still introduced the concept of fall damage in the first place, because it still had to feel like it made sense that when you fall, you could hurt yourself depending on the drop. Lava radiates heat, to the point where in the real world, people in full suits still need to stand far away, like another commenter remarked, but not in D&D. You will have to touch it first, but that still means that they made lava hazardous to you, because of course it is. It's lava! The line drawn between creating believable, consistent physics and adhering to real world physics to the point of carving into the fun of the game seems rather arbitrary when looked at through this lens, and at least partly, subjective. Some people LIKE the peasant rail gun, believe it or not. We like to get frustrated when people interpret the rules through the lens of RAW instead of RAI, but I understand why it is done - who is to say what the rules INTEND beyond the obvious cases? "Rule of cool", they say. But who decides when something is cool? The DM? The players? Do we put it to a vote? These paragraphs border on ranting now, but I wanted to underline how nuanced this discussion is. TLDR? Communication at the table is paramount. Cliche? Sure, but it tends to work.

This is a great video style! - The quick answer to physic breaking is just any spellcaster. Teleport goes brrrrr after all. - Other than that, running or flying at a high movement speed doesn't increase physical damage on impact. - Fall damage caps at 20d6. - Getting eaten and chewed on by a moon-sized creature, is about 24d10 damage according to the DMG. Pretty physics breaking as well. For Exploits and such usually comes hand in hand with engineers, such as they are making arrows that makes portable holes fall into a bag of holding or another portable hole, upon arrow impact.

Engineers, both a blessing and a curse at any table, haha. And also, thank you.

The physics thing I like to point out is lava. Real lava is ridiculously hot. Volcanologists in full heat protection suits have to stand a fair distance away from an active lava flow. D&D rules state you can stand in the square adjacent to lava and as long as you don't touch it you're fine.
@LiteraryDM14 күн бұрын
Great example. It's more fun and epic to have a fight near a river of lava, Mustafar style, than to worry about the protective gear to make it happen

There was one time in this group I was running years ago, where the Wizard and the Paladin in heavy plate wanted to magnetize the Paladin's armor so projectiles would target him, and they decided that the Wizard casting chain lightning on the Paladin's armor while he wasn't wearing it would work. I allowed it, because I honestly couldn't find a reason not to.😂

The weapon mastery feat has already been introduced. The 2014 Weapon Master feat has been changed to Martial Weapon Training in the 2024 PHB, and the Weapon Master feat in the 2024 PHB grants weapon mastery of one weapon you are proficient with.

My issue with dual wielding in 2024 is that it pigeon holes you into using very specific weapons with the nick proficiency. Which is fine if you wanted to be a dual wielding scimitar ranger, but any other fantasy is shot out the window. Wanna dual wield two battle axes or two war hammers? You can't.
@DrPluton19 күн бұрын
You still can, but you will have to use your bonus action. I think that's the point. They want more cumbersome weapons to not be used for dual-wielding as much as scimitars, daggers, and sickles.
@isa_noodle19 күн бұрын
@@DrPluton I was under the assumption that with the dual wielder feat, one of the weapons still has to be light.
@LiteraryDM19 күн бұрын
You are correct. The updated 2024 version removed the 2014 wording that allowed for any weapon type as long as it lacks the two handed property. 2024 you can still do two hand axes which has the vex property. So you can dual wield as long as both weapons are light similar to the 2014 rules. You'll just use your bonus action for the off hand attack rather than as a part of the attack action with the nick property.
@FirstLast-wk3kc18 күн бұрын
@@LiteraryDM which is not cool, because Nick is too specific. I want dual wield spears like Diarmuid(

@@isa_noodle same. Like I get the idea of dual weilding longswords or like axes.
@solbradguy762819 күн бұрын
I'm playing a dual wielder and my DM is using a homebrew rule where I can make an offhand attack without having to use my attack first as long as I use an attack action or maneuver that makes an attack in the same turn. Using an offhand with the Vex weapon mastery means I have advantage when attacking an enemy that I hit with the offhand first. So if I have Elven Accuracy, I can have super advantage against every enemy that I can hit with my offhand first.

I like 3.5e's crit system when you consider the number of attacks and the crit chance some characters can get. It's another dimension for your character to specialize in if they so desire, basically. Also, there's a bunch of item effects that happen on a 20 regardless of crit confirmation too, so that's another layer you can stack atop it all. I do agree that PF 2e has the superior system, by far. It's so elegant both how crits work and how nat 1's and nat 20's work. Well done Paizo.
