Great interview. Love this document to history where Doctor J responds decisively to the worst accusations levied at him. In the most charitable way of viewing this, maybe the journalist doesn't believe in the views he's challenging the psychologist to refute. And he does, refute them, as grossly shallow...mostly. Shallow.

Beat up story about nothing. Closest house is 100m away and there are only 8 houses with in 1 km. It is not on a main road. It is out in the country but close enough to get good access for deliveries NIMBY. I like that it is built on concrete and steel. Good idea as it can get very windy on that site!

This stuff used to be stored in the middle of Christchurch on Victoria Street. If people expect medical care that includes treatments and imaging that creates radioactive waste like X-rays, then it has to be stored somewhere. It’s pretty much nowhere compared to shaky post quake Central City Christchurch. That stuff has only been moved in the last year. I appreciate that transparency is a major issue. But to be fair, when she asked she was given all the answers. And to make a public thing about it before it went up would just invite kneejerk hostile complaints from the ignorant. Not to mention keeping this off the radar of idiots who think stealing this they could make something threatening out of it. I guess you put that on their radar now. Being on Defence land means this should be better protected. So take you pick of NZ Defence land and explore the possibilities, and maybe you would have come up with the same site, or maybe a different one. But there are NIMBYs everywhere.

Well, it’s not secret anymore…😂 low level, non fluid, spent material. Contained. The problem was the secrecy. And stop it with the low base tones in the report to make it all sound sinister please Herald.

Well if people want their cancer treatments then this is what we need to deal with the leftovers products. Better than storing it in the middle of earthquake prone Christchurch where it used to be.

There used to be radioactive storage in the Bomb storage bays at Wigram airfield (Air force base) here in Christchurch back in the 80’s and earlier. That land was handed over to Ngai Tahu and is now developed as residential properties.

Moving the facility would cost millions, and it isn't even a risk anyway. People hear radiation and get so scared because they have no underlying understanding, with their fears stemming from Chernobyl, a disaster 40 years ago in a country which cut so many corners that you are left with a circle. The basics of atomic physics should be mandatory in school, right now it's only in LV2 Physics. NZ shouldn't have nuclear reactors due to our earthquake risk, but we need to get over this irrational phobia at the same time.
@bentomlin818316 минут бұрын
Agree - if its what they say it is. But why not be transparent about that? Explain it to people. Without these storage facilities we cannot use these medical technologies. Being secretive about it just leaves everyone to assume that there is more than just low level radioactive waste. Everyone knows medical radioactive wastes are of little concern or they would not go to hospitals. So why the secrecy? Incompetence? Or something else is there?
@bentomlin818311 минут бұрын
Conspiracy theories are a major issue as people make conclusions to fill a void of unknowns. The way you manage disinformation and conspiratorial thinking, as well as shine light on genuine conspiracies, in simple transparency. It beggars belief that the health ministry dont already understand this.
