Hi, great video. I would like to check, if i made changes in the fields in the CRM Dynamics 365 ie, add or remove columns in the CRM report, would addition/deletion of columns reflect in the PBI report ?

It all depends on the way you're querying the data - the best approach, defined queries, means you do need to update the query with the new fields. - An open, unfiltered query would allow new fields to show up, but would perform poorly always.

Hi Scott, Thanks for this useful video for upserting records. Is there a video for implementing the same functionality with MS Fabric Warehouse table as the destination? I am trying to implement the feature MS Fabric Warehouse table but the Advanced Settings are different. There is no Write behaviour option and related settings. There is however, 'Pre-copy script' and Write batch timeout settings instead.
@MSFT_ScottSewell

The functionality delivers a lakehouse - if you'd like to copy that data into a warehouse, you can build your own pipelines to summarize, filter, supplement, and restructure the data into your own "sliver" layer there.

Can Fabric Link utilise the Direct Lake feature?
@MSFT_ScottSewell

Yes, but I might suggest only using it for extraordinarily large Dynamics datasets with very narrow/specific requirements. I would start with import or direct query methods first most Dynamics 365 use cases.

Publish all customizations from within dataverse and wait for the next synchronization. After waiting for a synchronization you can publish the table information to Fabric - I don’t think that’s necessary, but I always do it “for 🍀 luck!” 😀

Is it possible to visualize data across several tables? Or is it limited to the one view/table?

Is there a reason you are using SQL Views rather than relying on DirectLake?
@MSFT_ScottSewell
@MSFT_ScottSewell 4 ай бұрын
Yes, the value of Direct Lake really shines in the hundred of millions of records to billions of records - in general from D365 CE at least, a few million records is on the larger size and may not fully benefit from DirectLake's strengths. Additionally, Direct Lake presumes the format of the data being read from the table is already ready to be mapped directly into the analytics table, but with Dynamics data there is often a need to join the stringmap table for option set labels which causes a direct lake query to fall back to direct query. - Direct Lake is certainly possible (I have a Direct Lake demo report with 9M support cases built as a POC), but in general for D365, I would consider it only for special purposes and build it knowing the constraints upfront.

Just wanted to add an alternative to the DATEADD() which is to use something like the following: CAST([createdon] AT TIME ZONE 'UTC' AT TIME ZONE 'AUS Eastern Standard Time' AS DATETIME) This has the advantage of taking account of daylight saving time changes and so on, should it be an issue.

Thanks for the videos, I'm not sure how you figured all this out! I'd been using SQL endpoint to the CRM backend previously, and the codename fields were visible there, so was wondering what was going on when using Fabric linked data. Was good to know it wasn't something we'd done wrong, and how to get around it. 1 thing, if you happen to read this, my VS code doesn't fill in the AS field name like yours does, I'm guessing it's an add-in/extension. Any idea which one it might be? Thanks!

Hi Scott! Using the SQL Endpoint to create the views and bring in data with the SQL connection in PBI is really sharp! How do you prioritize between the give and take of SQL Views and import mode (or direct query) vs. creating a semantic model with lakehouse delta tables and 'Direct Lake' connections? I could see views being a choice that would typically be import mode but highly customizable, and Direct Lake being a choice where we don't need model refreshing - BUT your tables might have tons of CRM fields that aren't needed, or less custom setup like customer and owners?

See my response to the other DL question - I am mostly just glad that we have options to choose from. - Direct Lake is very impressive for massive datasets, but isn't the first choice for me when it comes to ease of use and re-usability in a D365 context which typically needs some data engineering/structuring before it's ready to go into the analytics table.

Great Video As usual! If I understood properly by creating a link t Fabric in Dataverse we replicate from Dataverse to Fabric, while if we have a shortcut the data are not replicated, is this correct?
@MSFT_ScottSewell
@MSFT_ScottSewell 5 ай бұрын
not quite. - In both cases, shortcuts are created in Fabric that point to the data stored in the Microsoft OneLake inside Dataverse. - The Link has to be established in Dataverse in order to populate the internal data lake - once that's populated, additional custom links from Fabric can be added.

You'll need a dev, test and prod Power BI set up as well. I currently manage the repointing manually since ALM would be a bit more overhead for my use case. I'd encourage you to take a look at the solution management documentation for one approach of deploying from dev to test to prod - It's a preview feature, but it's an option. learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-apps/maker/model-driven-apps/create-edit-powerbi-report-dataset-components Best of luck, for more details, I'd encourage you to work with an experienced partner - each customer's situation is more complex than can be managed in a youtube comment. 😀
