I practice the volleys at least 4 times a week and I play doubles a few times a week to get better at tennis! Becker is right about practicing!

And then Gustavo Kuerten came and passed the volley players left, right and even center. It's not a lack of skill that prevents classic net rush game. The game has changed. Some just haven't received the memo yet.

The power of the game now makes it difficult for volleyers. There'll be lots of passing shots if players seriously began volleying in the modern game.

Greatest volleys had Pete, and right after him was Roger.

With the improvement of racket technology and the slowdown of the balls by design to favor ground stroke rallies, volley can easily be neutralized by passing shots. It takes a phenomenal server like Mpetshi Parricard to execute serve and volley frequently.

Players who play doubles will volley more but the volley is not done as much. It’s crazy that big servers don’t use serve and volley as a weapon. Shelton and Eubanks are the only ones who come to mind.

I grew up watching tennis in the 80s and 90s. Matches between two serve and vollyers on a fast surface was NOT that entertaining to watch. Points were over way too quick from what I remember. I think the best era for tennis viewership was in the 90s when more baseliners started emerging and there was a variety of playing styles. Now, the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction and we're getting more boring baseline battles than before.

All the guys mentioned in the comments are great volleyers. But Mac was in a league of one. His touch was unbelievable . He got caught in the transition from wood to graphite which didnt do for Mac what it did for his contemporaries because he used a continental grip on everything.
