It used to be a lot harder to remove planeswalkers - there were no removal spells like Baleful Mastery yet that would target a creature or planeswalker, and really only red has burn, so if you weren't playing a red burn deck, you had to be playing creatures or "permanent" removal to get rid of them - which wasn't really a thing yet either.

Sadly your wrong. Sol Ring is in very deck so because everyone has it it’s not an unfair balance to the game. If Mana Crypt was reprinted to high heaven and bundled with every pre con then it wouldn’t have been banned.
@InsigneosАй бұрын
Untrue. They have never banned cards based on how expensive they are. The reason banned cards are often also expensive is because they warp the game.

@InsigneosАй бұрын
That’s my bad for not knowing that, thank you for the clarification!
@Lars_HermsenАй бұрын
I think it probably has to do with price. The banned cards were pretty expensive, while Sol Ring has always had a pretty stable supply and is therefor very reasonably attainable for the average player. On a separate note, while I don’t fully agree with the bannings, I do get why they did it; The cards were too strong to be in such little supply (which is to say, so expensive). I would’ve personally preferred they’d just printed more cards and made them more accessible in a tournament legal way (so, not proxying) but alas, Hasbro saw money and probably never would’ve done that to begin with. I feel like these bannings should be a wake-up call to people that pieces of cardboard from a game will never be a solid, reliable investment but as long as there’s money to be made I don’t see anyone stopping tbh.
@InsigneosАй бұрын
So WOTC can’t actually acknowledge the card’s price when reprinting or banning cards as that would cause Magic to be seen as gambling in the eyes of the law. Plus, if expensive cards were a problem then Gaea’s Cradle would’ve been banned a while ago.
@subparspellr9360Ай бұрын
Listen, I get it, but the difference between sol ring and mana crypt is basically just 1.5 life each turn. I don't understand banning ramp in a multiplayer format where games last well into an hour, while most other formats, a 15 minute match is considered long. All it does is accelerate the game. And you need a balance between your ramp, draw, and synergy. Ideally, your commander synergizes with ramp or draw, or both. But banning cards that basically just allow players to play janky decks, is forcing the meta if you want to be viable at your table. Ban broken cards, not ramp. I will concede that dockside was a good ban. It was abusable. Less so with mana crypt and jeweled lotus

@andrewwilliamson2722Ай бұрын
It's also in almost every precon to ever exist, so there would be a grand total of 2-3 that you could grab without it and not be playing a banned deck, therefore causing the company to lose one of its highest profit margins........... or maybe it's just a mascot 🤷♂️
@BOBJOEx2Ай бұрын
Stupid. Every argument for the other cards being banned applies to Sol ring. If 1 card is so good it has to go into every deck then it needs to go.

It will be there because it always has, is an argument you can use for any card. I don’t care if it makes every commander precon illegal out of the box. Out of principle, if mana crypt is banned then sol ring should also be banned.

Oh I wholeheartedly agree, it’s just that this is the reasoning the commander rules committee as well as commander format panel has stated a handful of times now.

Not as powerful as moxin? It is equal if not sometimes better. The reason why people always downplay it is simply they are used to it casting lower powered cards. If people played with moxin in mid to low powered decks it would have the same effect on a game.
@CHROM3T1TAN001Ай бұрын
It's not as powerful because you can play all the moxs in one turn and when you can play things for free it makes it very powerful

Graveyard hate shuts it down completely with cards like rest in peace
@Insigneos2 ай бұрын
Well duh. But considering graveyard decks are always prominent (pioneer Arclight Phoenix), there’s more to the game than “there’s a card that beats your deck”. Blood moon shuts down both Titan and Tron, yet they persist.
@unknownservant9132 ай бұрын
True, there have been a surplus of graveyard decks. However, Leyline is and has very rarely been the answer I these decks. It just doesn’t do what you need a graveyard hate card to do, and with the excess of 1 mana cards that much more efficiently handle graveyards, Leyline of the void just doesn’t have a spot in the sideboard anymore, especially when you consider the flexibility of things like Nihil spellbomb or soul-guide lantern and the requirement to run 3-4 Leyline of the void to fill the role that 2-3 relic of progenitus or similar fills
@blueredlover10602 ай бұрын
Leyline is often a turn 0 play on the board before anything else hits the battlefield. It's generally harder to deal with than any Artifact based exile effect and can't be baited into being used at inopportune times. There's a push pull dynamic between things like Lantern and Leyline.
