I remember watching some of these clips on American police TV shows “We Got a clip from Londonland” it was always a Metro or Cavalier get away car being chased by an Astra or similar police car in Sheffield or Birmingham

I'm a huge fan of the SD1, however if they had the contemporary SAAB 9000 T16 they would have pulled over 130 MPH no problem...
@stevekenilworth2 күн бұрын
do like SD1 been in one to and great sound, but the cops saying flat out struggling to hit 120mph surprised me. ive seen my old car a 1.2 i20 gen 1 hit 190kph a 119mph on autobahn it really shows how far cars have got, old days needed a small 3.5v8 but now a 4 cylinder 1.2 could do that, but if small engine and turbo it easy go just as good if not better than SD1. i do really like the rover esp v8 but for performance it amazing how far things gone in that time frame

@ quite agree an absolutely iconic design and sound, really exotic to see one growing up in the 70's given the average normal car then could just crack 90mph so the SD1 was significantly faster. I now own a Skoda Octavia VRS 245 a favourite with the Police so in a way a successor to the Rover.

Unless you had SEG riders, you would never do this now. What the feck was wrong with using a helicopter and not risking lives on London streets?

Absolute respect to all concerned in the making of this video. I know myself what it's like to drive through Central London. Nightmare! This footage is absolutely Golden watching it in 2024. - Oh if only it was now in 4K. I can only imagine those Rover SD1's were Sizzling by the time they reached the Cromwell Hospital. I bet they consumed plenty of fuel too? I'd love to know exactly what you did immediately after the handover at Cromwell Hospital? Large Brandy by any chance? 🙂 Excellent driving too. I salute you all... 5*

They were the stereotypical Met Police Traffic Cops. Whenever I've been tugged by them they always look like these two blokes. Their caps never seem to sit on their heads properly and their dress always looked the same. Ties not sitting straight and when they exit their vehicles their shirts always need to be tucked in especially at the back. The WPC's are the same....🤷🏻♂️

The amount of people driving, riding and just standing at the junctions who risked their lives for this one lady. Amazing driving skills too. The Old Bill in Traffic departments are amazing drivers.

I managed to chat with the driver of the video car that night. The vehicle is C572 RCF, a BMW first registered in March 1986. The driver had stolen the BMW from his brother, and was picked up in Southall. The pursuit lasted one hour in total, crossing through four counties, Greater London (Met jurisdiction), Berkshire (Thames Valley jurisdiction), Surrey and Hampshire, before returning to Southall. The driver crashed because he'd taken the keys out of the ignition before the car came to a complete stop, causing the steering lock to activate. He was twice over the limit and only had one eye, having lost the other in a car accident in India. He received 4.5 years in prison at the Old Bailey. As bad as the accident looks, the stolen BMW was not a write-off, and is still about.

All I can is wow. I understand driving to a clock as a former Nat exp driver I drove all those roads in the east end although I used to favour the Wanstead flats to Stratford broadway to drop off then turn down passed bow flyover to billingsgate through the tunnel and finally down the embankment, but in all fairness to the lads here we only transported the public and Crabs from Cromer for some lab or restaurant, we couldn’t be more than 5hrs or crabs 🦀 wasted, seeing this brought back many happy memories of driving a route I enjoyed doing.

The first chase is classic. Had this on tape years ago. I used to drive on the M25 back then. It’s amazing how quiet the roads were in the early 90s. The Uk had a lower population, less people means less cars.

Watching this reminded me how much the new like road from Redbridge Roundabout was a blessing, It once took me three hours to get to Redbridge where now it takes 20 minutes on a very bad day. Plus irreverent on the Mile End road I see Ward Brothers which was my local car parts shop, no longer there. What a great bit of collaboration with the different police officers from other forces.
