I'm guessing he see's 20m circles as hard work so escaping is much more fun! Had the same with mine, anything to get out of working hard. Lot easier in a round lunge pen if you have access to one, also helps moving him around loose so he knows your the alpha and in charge.

Horse psychology: They're prey animals so everything in the wild is out to eat them. They are herd animals so feel safer with others. If it look's dangerous or you don't know what it is, it's easier and safer to run away. That said, as your bond grows then so does the level of trust, everything is a learning experience. Getting off is not always a great idea, it put's you in a position where you have the least amount of control. It also removes most of your aids so your ability to communicate directly is almost lost. Best bet is to stop and let them stand and look till they figure it out.

Try tipping his head little to your side by shortening his left rein so if he moves he will move in a circle not forward until you get on him

Let your stirrup leather down to the last hole, mount and then adjust it to the normal length. You can also get an extender that clips into the iron and gives you an extra few inches. You can keep it in a pocket just in case.
