In the Gen 2? Yes same water. We have only ever used spring or RO water. Our tap water has never been safe to drink. Same water. Gen 2 is built better and designed different.

I know this know this video is 2 years old, but i would recommend that you use filtered water. I have a high end filter on the water that i pour into here and after a year it looks very clean. That mold has to come somewhere and i would not be surprised if it was coming out of your water source. Thanks for sharing

I own a gen 1, I opened it a few months ago and completely washed it, it has mould again. It’s almost pushing my trash it button. I heard there’s another brand that uses a completely different design and it’s supposed to not build mould (at least as much) but it’s always out of stock

Gen 1 should all be trashed. There is nothing to do about how badly they are designed. You won't be able to fix it or solve the problem. Just get rid of it and get a gen 2 or different brand.

Did you figure it out? Is it the side reservoir?
@ElaineBarlow
@ElaineBarlow 4 ай бұрын
For me it is yes. When I don't use it, I never have the squeaking problem. I think there are two different kinds of squeaking ... one is definitely having to do with build up inside the machine ... the other seems to have to do with water pressure and air. If you empty the machine and both hoses and only use the built in reservoir see if you still have the problem after you have run vinegar through it (for basic cleaning, hard water etc).

stop using the reservoir. Empty the entire unit of water including all the hoses make sure they are clear. Only fill the base reservoir and tell me if you still get squealing after that. Also do a good cleaning with any kind of ice cleaner or vinegar or whatever you prefer. Like run it through several times. Tell me what happens.

Thank you for all the videos Elaine! I am NC and run my Opal 2.0 on filtered well water. I have this above normal squealing issue as well like most people probably do. It seems to occur randomly and I have not logged it to see if there is a pattern. I have not heard it much in the past few months, once as I recall. It was happening more back in Nov-Dec a few times a week so perhaps related to colder weather? Anyway, when this occurs here I start with a quick unplug for 1-5 minutes, then replug, let it run, and usually this will resolve the issue. If not I will opt to unplug it again for a slightly longer time until it stops. I did the descaling process (without opening the unit) per the manual several months for the first time after the first year of use and that seemed to help with the general noise and louder squealing for a day or few but it did return shortly after, and it still randomly returns so that did not seem to solve this issue but may help for the short term.

@@ElaineBarlow Yes I do, and speaking of Opal challenges our default oval reservoir one had problems where it started leaking at that join area where the two parts of the water container come together. We had to get that replaced under warranty and they sent the larger rectangle one as a replacement and no problem since. That makes me wonder if that is a known issue for those containers.

@@ElaineBarlow I will try this when I hear the loud squealing again. Right now I have a new issue where the unit is leaking water out of the bottom all over my counter when attempting to make ice. We have seen a similar issue months back where we have minimal water and the Opal support site reported this as defrost condensation but now it makes a tiny bit of ice if any and just leaks most all of the water from the reservoir out of the bottom of the unit so it is now not working as it should. We noticed this started a few weeks back and it was still making ice but has gotten worse and is now unusable so we are about to call for warranty support or replacement.

Great videos. I actually run CLR through the machine followed up with a bleach solution then several times rinses and that stuff works great! I also attached a small auxiliary fan to the side actuated by a WiFi Sonoff TM16 temperature activation module so as to automatically turn the fan on at a specific temperature. The unit would just not make any ice until I figured out these Gen 1 units have a horrible ventilation system and the compressor easily overheats and just shuts down. Would be nice if GE or someone would've mentioned that! 😂

Thank you!! The first thing I noticed that was a BIG difference and a huge mistake (that they have now fixed for an extra $&&) was the size of water reservoir. The first was exactly 1 gallon which made nice if you were buying purified water. The 2.0 is only .75 gallon. They now have introduced 2.0 XL that has the 1 gallon reservoir.

Hello Elaine. Thank you for these videos. I’m not having a great experience with my 2.0. At a little over 6 months it started making a terrible screeching noise. I run the descale process over and over as I’m guessing it’s a hard water issue, but it doesn’t help. GE has offered to look at it for $250, surprising because I thought it had a 1 year warranty. If they can’t repair they will refund $125, but I’m still out the rest on a new and expensive appliance. I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on something other than the descaling process that I can look at before deciding on sending this in? Thank you!

@ElaineBarlow Жыл бұрын
NEVER use tap water in your ice maker. Always use reverse osmosis or filtered water or spring water. We have extremely hard water where I live, in fact there's all kinds of issues with the water and we NEVER drink out of the tap. I live in an apartment and couldn't alter too much of my plumbing but I got a Waterdrop RO Under Sink system (www.waterdropfilter.com/) and I use that water for drinking, making ice, and coffee. I haven't had to do much descaling with the 2.0 but I use this (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LZK0UG3) on my old ice maker. Most problems with all these ice makers (except for the utterly defective Gen 1s which were terribly designed and faulty from the beginning ... ) is often user error. People don't take care of them or clean them as often as they should and get mold, or they use the wrong water etc. The machines work when you do what you need to and take care of them. My Gen 2 hasn't given me any trouble since I first got it and I haven't done anything to it as far as cleaning or even maintenance so when I do my follow up video you all can see what it looks like inside as far as build up but normally, I'd do an HOCL run through once a week and a descale, if needed, monthly ... that's it.
