I love how Eggers went for a more "accurate" look and tried to incorporate Orlok's original features - like sharp front teeth, elf like ears and long fingernails - as result of body decay.

I have seen historical art that is purported to depict Vlad the Impaler's father. He is either bald or has his head shaved. I don't remember seeing a top knot. If you look up videos of practitioners of traditional Russian and Ukrainian Cossack shashka sword fighting you will see some with the old timey top knot hair style and mustache like Orlok.

im going to be completely honest but i absolutely HATE this version of Nosferatu. He looks more like a zombie than a vampire and he isn't nearly rat like enough like where are his fangs???? I understand that this is closer to the description of Dracula in the book but after 100 years i think its safe to say that Nosferatu and the imagery around it has split from the original Dracula novel enough to be its own thing. The film overall was such as disappointment to me.

These were so fun! It's funny bc we still have our Christmas tree up and I think the heavy star fell off on the top.... but the shadow my tree gives scared the heck out of me one evening.... it looks EXACTLY like his costume... really creepy, but also cool!

The problem is, a Transylvanian nobleman does not look like a monster. This visual depiction might be historically accurate, but that does not make it terrifying. I did not find this film scary or horrific in the least. This is a gothic romantic drama, nothing more.

The scary thing about Dracula the book is its plausiblity. Old foreigner wants to buy an abandoned abbey in England. He looks like an old man with white moustache. As for Vlad the Impaler hevwas 5ft and 7.

I don't have any issues with the mustache, but I do think it's unfair to say that those who don't like it "don't understand." It comes across as a bit superior. Some people just aren't concerned with "historical accuracy" and "realism" when it comes to vampire movies.

My one issue with his whole look is that his eyes are sooo normal looking😢 I wish they would’ve given him some cataracts / milky eye contact kinda like that eye shot we saw in the trailers and his dead body at the end... coz if they were white eggers could’ve had his eyes do eye shine in the shadows and for those silhouette shots in his castle. Coz his eyes are far too normal throughout the film compared to the rest of his rotting body.

Totally love how Egers gave us a very fresh, original and visually compelling new pop culture character rooted deeply into tradition. Much better and different than seeying the same, exhausted vampire tropes or recreating the original look in a sterile manner. Skarsgard’s amazing performance really brought the character to (undead lol) life and gave him so much bleak charisma and personality.

The makeup and look of Orlok is a damn masterpiece - However …The one thing we never get a very clear shot of is his teeth! I know from the quick glimpses in the film that they are snarley and jagged but I’d love to see them in detail. He is a vampire after all, and their teeth are a super fascinating component of their otherworldly-ness. But that’s part of the genius of Eggers’ filmmaking style - that almost mundane “matter of fact” realism layered over the supernatural elements in his stories.

The typical canines of vampires come from cheap b movies of the 60s and 70s. In folklore they either have no fangs or they have some form of sharp teeth all over. Even Lugosi, he didn't have fangs.

As much as I love the film and as great a job as they did with the actual makeup itself, the design of Orlok in this just isn't nearly as scary to me as the other incarnations of the character. The moustache, as much sense as it makes to include, does detract from the scary factor for me, so I get people's complaints. I also think they should have kept the pointy ears. Even his front fangs are gone or obscured. By making all of the changes they did, they essentially just made him look more human.
@chasingautumns

I feel like at this point, actual pointed ears just....aren't that scary anymore. I adore the original design but the ears look a bit goofy today. And to me, that's kinda what intrigues me, I like the challenge they made in toning down the more overt "vampire" traits in favor of him being an undead nobleman.

I really do love how the costume isn't complete with just the costume. You need all the elements of the scene to make it work. It's just so unsettling. But I would like to see a short of Orlok's perspective with Skarsgard actual voice and just wondering why folks are freaking out.

I'm super intrigued. I don't want Eggers to be pigeonholed into just doing monster movies but if he's happy to make them then I'll be happy to give them a shot. I haven't been able to find TOO too much on the internet, but I'm SUPER DUPER curious about what medieval werewolf folklore looked like back in those days, that's the biggest draw for me considering Eggers' draw towards historical authenticity and the superstitions of those time periods.
