With my 6 & 8 year old boys, I've done more formal learning for electives, but what I keep going back to is getting books from the library. Its been the most engaging and i see the most retention by simply reading great books and talking about them! We add in some activities/field trips as we can, but the books are just the best!
@saltandlighthomeschool9 сағат бұрын
I love that idea! Do you have a way that you find good quality books from the library? I feel like when we go and just take books, most of them end up not really very good quality ones and it has deterred me from going as much

I know some people don’t teach science and history much until end of elementary/beginning of middle school. Because like you said it doesn’t stick much. The younger years it’s just fine to focus more on the basics - reading, (hand)writing, and math.

We are doing TGATB Math and LA, with Explode the Code. I bought IXL for a year with Christmas money, and we are trying Prodigy with my son(he really likes Math and numbers). He's in kindergarten, and Prodigy is for 1st grade, but it's free, and I am able to sit next to him to help him. Im watching for both. My daughter is 4 and my son is almost 6.

I’m doing the same thing with TGTB LA. My son is doing TGTB with a few AAR lessons sprinkled in. We also switched from TGTB math to MWC (Apologia math for my older kids) and will never look back. TGTB math did not work for my kids. It was too scattered and didn’t stay on any topic long enough for it to stick for my kids. I think it works good for kids who are very math minded. But that’s not my kids. 😁

Great video as always! It's funny you talked about history and science because I am planning for when my son is in second grade in the fall and asked my best friend who teaches and grade this year how much she covers history and geography because I only plan on doing history according to our picture books from five in a row next year (this year doing abeka history once a week) and she said she doesn't even cover it in her class becsuse it's just too much going on ..( the kids are in school all day!) Her friend who is a second grade teacher covers history but not science lol. So I'm not worried and you shouldn't be worried lol I get picture book ideas from home learning year by year book (from Amazon) . I'm against box curriculums also never tried it and won't. 100 devotions about God ans science we read during lunch and also of picture books when snuggling. Charlotte's web we have been listening while driving.

We lose steam, too, and sometimes I wonder if the kids are truly listening to me for Science and SS. We sit down together, and they do their sight words book, handwriting, and Explode the code together (each working on their own book) with me sitting between them. Then my son breaks while I work with my daughter. When she's done, I work with my son on TGATB Math and LA before we eat lunch and are done. After Christmas, I want to try to incorporate IXL into our daily rhythm.

Great video! It's going well this year but yes like you said it's so hard finding that perfect plan for language arts especially for the early years like 1st grade. I'm not a fan of all in one but also having seperate handwriting, English, reading , spelling, and writing is exhausting and i definitely can't get to all of it every day . We only do social studies and science once a week but I feel like we discuss those things organically at random parts of the week like in the car or when my son wants to know how something works. I was going to try to do two math curriculums this year and that lasted not even a week lol

I’m using AAR paired with Explode the Code with my four year old. We don’t use any writing, grammar, or spelling programs. Instead of reading some of the words from the fluency sheets from level one of AAR, my son will ask if he can spell them from dictation instead. Since they’re only CVC words at this point I let him and he gets them all right. He’ll also ask me how to spell whatever comes to his mind on occasion and he adds them to his notebook. When he’s ready and interested I’ll have him do copy work for writing and grammar instruction. We love MWC!! It’s the only math we use for both of our kids. My son flew through Preschool Math at Home and MWC K. We just got into the first grade level about two weeks ago. The manipulatives for the kindergarten level are definitely cumbersome, but not the end of the world for us. I do try to streamline them as much as possible though because nobody has time for all that lol.

We tried TGTB math 1 two years ago when my daughter was in first grade and I thought the same thing, that it wasn't deep enough. I also found their work pages too crowded and I thought that was too distracting for my daughter so I stopped using it (even though my daughter seemed to enjoy it). We bounced around with math curriculums which all made her cry every time I pulled math out. Finally landed on MWC 1 and she seemed to enjoy it enough to the point that I bought second grade MWC for grade 2. MWC 2 quickly turned into the same battle. Cue us bouncing around between two more math curriculums and every one resulting in the same thing. She'd cry, become overwhelmed and freeze. To the point where she was retaining nothing being taught. Out of desperation I downloaded the free pdf of TGTB again. I can honestly say after using it for the last 3 weeks, she's like a different kid. She loves math now. Doesn't cry and is actually learning because she's not shutting down during our lessons. I wish I had never stopped it to be honest 😅 I don't even care if it doesn't go as deep as some other curriculums because this is the only time in the last 2 years she's been calm enough to actually retain the information she's being taught! Not saying you should stay with TGTB. I hope MWC continues to work for you guys! I guess I just wanted to share my experience of "don't fix what isn't broken" 😂 just because I thought it wasn't going to be enough.
@saltandlighthomeschoolАй бұрын

We made it halfway through AAR 1 , then started supplementing with TGTB K. They pair very well together. MY son started to hate the fluency sheets with AAR. TGTB booster cards and reading booster books have helped tremendously in that regard. I still want him to have a strong phonics background so now we are pairing TGTB with Logic of English.

MWC does feel like there's so much to keep track of even if make a math kit. I'm homeschool mom to 3, oldest is 6th grade MWC. We're on our 6th yr with it. Whats made me stick with it is how well it works and that my kids love math over everything else becaaue of it. I did read lessons ahead for a few years. I don't now becasue after 5yrs I'm so familiar with the format i know where all the info is and where to look. You also just get better at math when you've taught it for longer. I'm on my 3rd pass throguh 1st grade MWC. One comment about your son seeming to forget everything. I would not worry about it. And consider on holding off on LA for a bit longer. I'm on my 3rd child going through this process and she's 6. My conclusion is kids can start early with math because it's concrete. They don't even need to understand the symbols for math (numbers) for a couple of years to be able to do math. We can represent numbers to 100 on a ten frame and do all sorts of math in our brain without using symbols for quite some time. LA however requires much different skills. You have to be able to attach a sound to a symbol to read. You have to remember a sequence of events to draw a letter. You have to remember where to start and how to form it. These are skills which i think younger brains arent ready to remember. I think their brain is still developing the part of the mind that retains this sort of info. So from a mom who didnt push LA with her first 2 and both of them jumped to grade level reading in just a few months at age 8-9.....dont stress or push. I'm not saying don't try. But you may find it easier, as i did, if you just wait a bit longer. And instead of spending soooo much tims trying to gain retention, his brain will retain it easier when he's older. Spend a lot of time reading books together. And do art for writing readiness. Enjoy! They grow fast.

I absolute love All About Reading! I initially chose it because I was looking for something hands on, with little to no worksheets and no handwriting. My son was ready to read, but not ready to write or do seat work. When you complete all 4 levels--- you will have full mastery of reading. This program will take you above and beyond reading at grade level. It is also teacher intensive. This program will work for any child who can't stop moving and any homeschooling parent with the 20min a day to dedicate to a phonics lesson. I have used all 4 levels. My teenage son has always been an excellent reader because of this problem. I'm currently working through level 1 with my youngest. I'm enjoy our time together knowing how fast the years go. I have never used TGTB--- but it looks great too. Always start with what your child and you as a homeschooling teacher need, than find a curriculum that closely resembles that. Any curriculum will work at the end of the day because they are just tools. ✌
