Congratulations on starting your journey with the Bible! That’s a wonderful step, and your passion for truth is inspiring. But as you read, consider this: How do you know the Bible you’re holding is complete and correct? In the early Church, many writings claimed to be Scripture, like the Gospel of Thomas or Gospel of Peter, yet the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, discerned the true canon in the late 4th century. Without the Church, there would be no Bible as we know it. If the Church was right in preserving the Bible, why reject its authority in interpreting it? Most early Christians couldn’t read or access Scripture, so they relied on oral Tradition and the Apostles’ teachings, just as Paul instructs in 2 Thessalonians 2:15 to hold fast to traditions passed “by word of mouth or letter.” Today, we see thousands of Protestant denominations interpreting the same Bible differently, proving Scripture wasn’t meant to be isolated from the Church, which is called the “pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). Even Peter warns in 2 Peter 3:16 that some parts of Scripture are hard to understand, leading to destruction when twisted. Jesus didn’t leave us with only a book-He left us a Church to preserve unity and truth. As you read, I encourage you to explore the early Church Fathers, who show how early Christians understood and lived the Gospel. Keep seeking the truth-it’s an incredible journey!

Hey there! First off, I want to acknowledge your passion for the Bible and your desire to know and follow Christ. That’s an incredible foundation for your faith, and it’s clear you care deeply about understanding the Gospel. I’d love to have an open and honest conversation about some of the concerns you’ve raised about the Catholic Church. These are big questions, and they deserve thoughtful answers. I also want to challenge you a bit: It seems like you’re focusing only on the New Testament without taking the Old Testament into context. But here’s the thing-Jesus is the fulfillment of everything in the Old Testament. Without understanding the Old, it’s easy to miss the full depth of the New. By focusing only on the New Testament, you risk creating a different image of God, one that’s disconnected from the full story of salvation. 1. Salvation: Grace, Faith, and Works You mentioned that the Catholic Church teaches that “good works” are necessary for salvation and that this somehow diminishes Jesus’ sacrifice. Let me be clear: The Church teaches that salvation is entirely a gift of grace, made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection. However, it also teaches that faith is never alone-it must be lived out in obedience and love. Let’s look at Scripture: Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God-not the result of works, so that no one may boast.” Salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn. The Catholic Church fully agrees with this. James 2:24: “You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.” This shows that true faith isn’t passive-it produces action. John 14:15: Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Love for Christ naturally leads to obedience. Now, let’s tie this to the Old Testament. Throughout the Old Testament, we see that God desires obedience, not just empty sacrifice: 1 Samuel 15:22: “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20: God sets before His people life and death, blessing and curse, and calls them to choose life by loving and obeying Him. Jesus fulfills this by showing us perfect obedience. His crucifixion was the ultimate act of love and submission to God’s will (Philippians 2:8). Wouldn’t true faith in Jesus involve following His example of obedience and love? 2. Faith Alone vs. Obedience: Misunderstanding the Church You also mentioned that the Church teaches people who believe in “faith alone” cannot be saved. Here’s the truth: The Church rejects the idea of “faith alone” because Scripture does too (James 2:17). However, it doesn’t mean that anyone who misunderstands this is automatically condemned. God judges hearts, not theological formulas. Think about it this way: Faith is the root, and works are the fruit. If a tree has no fruit, can we truly say it’s alive? True faith naturally leads to obedience and good works-not to earn salvation, but as a response to God’s love. 3. Mortal and Venial Sins: Biblical Distinctions You mentioned that the Church “made up” the idea of mortal and venial sins, but these distinctions come straight from Scripture: 1 John 5:16-17: “There is sin that leads to death... there is sin that does not lead to death.” This clearly distinguishes between serious sins and less serious ones. Luke 12:47-48: Jesus speaks about different levels of accountability, showing that not all sins are equally grave. The concept of mortal sin isn’t about doubting God’s grace-it’s about understanding that some sins (like murder or adultery) involve a deliberate rejection of God, which separates us from Him. Venial sins, while still harmful, don’t break our relationship with God but wound it. Wouldn’t you agree that some sins are more serious than others? 4. Reading the Old Testament in Context Here’s where I want to challenge you: If you read only the New Testament, you miss the foundation that the Old Testament provides. Jesus didn’t come to abolish the Old Testament but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17). Every part of the Old Testament points to Him: The sacrificial lamb in Exodus 12 foreshadows Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). The covenant promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:3) are fulfilled in Christ, who brings salvation to all nations. The prophecies in Isaiah 53 describe the suffering servant who takes on our sins-fulfilled perfectly in Jesus’ passion and death. By ignoring the Old Testament, you risk misunderstanding Jesus’ mission and the depth of God’s plan for salvation. Wouldn’t you want to see how the entire Bible fits together as one cohesive story? 5. The Pharisee Comparison Finally, you compared the Catholic Church to the Pharisees. I get where that concern comes from, but let’s dig deeper. Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their hypocrisy-for following external rules without love or humility (Matthew 23:27). The Catholic Church, by contrast, teaches that all its practices, from sacraments to moral teachings, are meant to draw us closer to Christ. Far from being a burden, the Church’s teachings reflect the relationship God established with His people in the Old Testament. For example: Just as God gave the Israelites laws to guide them, the Church gives moral teachings to help us live holy lives. Just as God gave the Israelites the Passover as a sign of their covenant, Jesus gives us the Eucharist as the new covenant in His blood (Luke 22:20). The Church isn’t about empty rituals-it’s about living out the Gospel in its fullness, uniting faith and obedience. Conclusion: An Invitation to the Full Gospel I admire your love for the New Testament, but I encourage you to read it in light of the Old Testament and the teachings of the early Church. God’s story of salvation is one continuous narrative, from Genesis to Revelation, and Jesus is its fulfillment. The Catholic Church isn’t trying to replace Jesus or His sacrifice-it’s here to help us live out the Gospel as Christ intended, through faith, love, and obedience. You’re asking big questions, and that’s amazing. Keep asking, keep seeking, and keep studying. But don’t stop with just the New Testament-read the Old Testament, study the Church Fathers, and explore the history of how God’s Word has been preserved and taught. I think you’ll find that the Gospel is even richer and deeper than you imagined. God bless you on your journey!

Any versions of the Bible that changed, or added to, or take away from the original text, for whatever reasons- whether for better understanding or whatnot, is not of God. All these different version are not the true scripture. They are making the word of God impotent. This is a sin against the Holy Spirit, thus, it's an unpardonable sin. Isaiah 29:11-16. It doesn't matter which versions, apart from the original version, which is only taught and interpreted by asking the Holy Spirit, they're all lies. John 14:26; Deuteronomy 4:2; Revelation 22:18-19!

Hi, my name is Jeremy Golding. I had reached out to you for help, and you had said I could either find you on Facebook, or email you. I could not find you on Facebook by the link you provided, and I do not know your last name. Maybe you think I am scamming you. I promise I am not. If you are really a Christian, I do not believe you will turn your back on me in my need.

My favorite study bible right now is the NASB95 Grace and Truth Study Bible. The notes are so eye-opening for me and are helping me understand context. I also just got the ESV Study Bible and CSB Study bible in digital formats, so I can't wait to dive into those.

Claiming Christianity, the NASB, LSB, ASB, ESV, CSB, as well as other modern translations are from the erroneous Alexandrian of Egypt texts, so forget them. The NKJV is the most accurate translation from the most and most accurate Greek manuscripts.

Has anyone bought the Kindle version of the ESV Study Bible? I bought the physical copy, but the text is too small for my eyes. I was thinking about getting the Kindle version, so I can change the font size, but I’m hoping all the charts and graphics are included and look good in the Kindle app.

Have been reading the New Testament each month this year in a different version each month. Being raised as a kid on KJV I tend to prefer more literal versions. I like NASB1995 followed by NASB2020, then MEV best. Reading CSB this month. I like it so far more than the NIV. For daily reading the CSB is nice due to formats like single column. The Zondervan Passagio NASB is also very nice.

QUESTIONS: 1. Why do you believe in sola scriptura? What is the basis for that belief? My understanding is, sola scriptura is one of 5 solas of the reformation. That would be a decision by men, or a council, right? Wouldn’t the belief in sola scriptura go against sola scriptura? 2. Do you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, but not inherent or the inspired AND inherent word of God? If inherent, why? Don’t not see ANY problematic themes, instructions, or stories? None? Or do you choose to see them, ignore them, or justify them? I come at these questions with genuine curiosity. I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, was an alter boy, and had nothing but an exceptionally positive experience with the church, my school, my teachers, my priests, the nuns, and all my classmates. It was genuinely a completely positive experience. That said, by the time I was 12-13 years old, I saw too many problems with the church on a larger level than my own personal experience to ignore. It started to feel more like a government organization than a church. Rules and beliefs seemed to be very often of men and not of God, yet described as of God. The history of the church was also highly problematic, and as I grew up, more and more stories of child abuse became common knowledge. I did not lose my faith in God or Jesus, but I lost my faith in that organization. From there I went to MANY Protestant churches. I felt like a found more of the same, but in different ways. Highly flawed leaders, people I would consider fake/phony Christians, a disgusting focus on money (in many, not all), and an enormous lacking in humility. All of these churches are FULL of people who are convinced they KNOW what God wants, what is true and what is false, what is right and what is wrong. They have all seemed to be eating blindly from the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil… and gorging themselves. I have not found a church I trust or respect, which is extremely surprising to me. I feel my bar is extremely low. Share what you believe, not what you know, because you know NOTHING. Have humility, admit what you do not know, admit when you are wrong, admit when your church has been wrong, and be honest. Simple things. I have not found that. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, but I have not found it. I have found a few self described Christians who fit that mold and some non Christians too, but I have not found a church like that and I have found many, way too many that feel disgusting, disturbing, and evil. PS: I have not only attended many churches as a guest, I have also been asked to speak at many churches, in the United States and several other countries. In each case I have met with the leaders of those churches, been treated very well by most, but I also felt most of them were con artists and liars, lining their own pockets, selling a product they don’t believe in or care about… God. That’s why I stopped. I could not stomach it anymore. Also, for what it’s worth, I was never paid by any of those churches. They wanted me to speak on behalf of an organization I represented that was not a religious entity in any way. I also spoke at schools and various other conventions. Sadly, the churches made me feel dirty. They were all Christian churches, and a few Jewish community groups, but never a synagogue.

I agree 100%. I am 46 years old, I still have 20/20 vision, but I can tell when reading my vision isn’t as good as it used to be. I bought a NLT Large print for myself and a Giant print for a relative last year. I like hers sooooooo much better. The text is bigger and easier to read and oddly, the Bible feels much smaller and more manageable to hold and read. My large print feels awkwardly large. The large print is okay to read on a table, but not comfortable in the hand. Also, I don’t have small hands, I can comfortably palm a basketball. As in pick it up with one hand. Yet, the giant print is very comfortable to read at a chair, holding it in your hands. It also works great on a table because it lays flat. The giant print is the best version. I need to either sell my large print or gift it to someone and buy a giant print.

I have seen the student version has more color coding, graphics, etc, but I don’t know if the actual content is the same or different. If the content is the same, I like having color/graphics, but if the student one has “life application” content for teens, I might be too old for that 😂

This one really bugs me as God is aways shown to be loving and just yet Lev 25. says "As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. 45 You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. 46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you to inherit as a possession forever." This is God giving hebrews instructions on how to buy slaves who are slaves forever.

One can always find an opinion that matches their own on KZbin or that disagrees with their favorite choice. I also like to use Olive Tree Bible App when I want to compare different translations or to jump to footnotes, or or English with Greek below the English.

We have to save ourselves according to Peter in Acts 2 and Paul in 1 Timothy 4:16, do not confuse calvinism with christianity. Yes, Jesus said "without Me you can not do nothing" (John 15:5), but He did not say to His disciples "just relax, you do not have to do a thing regarding your final salvation". For example: Do you have to avoid sexual sins so that God does not send you to hell? Yes or No?.

Nowhere the Scripture says that we are saved through faith alone. To receive initial salvation we have to believe AND be baptized (Mark 16:16), we have to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38) because baptism saves (1 Peter 3:21). If you do not respect what the Scripture says at least respect your father Martin Luther who said that anyone who rejects the salvific efficacy of baptism is doing the work of the devil...yes he defended Sola Fide and Sola Scriptura centuries before you.

I don't believe the 66 is all we need, You really believe those were the only "Scriptures" produced or "inspired."Just my opinion. Even in the 66 there are books that are spoken about that are not placed in the "Accepted Cannon". I don't believe GOD came from heaven and said this the only Truth and you should only read this 66. KJV 1611 had the Apocrypha as well. Just my opinion. answer me this, by what authority was the cannon given?
