Ah, thanks for reading my email, yeah nobody really knows what that tunnel was used for. My best guess is a water outflow because if you look at old maps of the area pre 1930's there is a reservoir around where the Parks inn is.

Will these exist be used at some point in time? It seems likely to me they will be. If they had waited, when they do come to use them, there will be the cost in terms of building the junction, probably much more than current, the disruption to the main flow of traffic. Would they be able to get the developer to pay? Do these ghost roundabout get built often? I think I have seen many. Do they remain ghost for long periods of time? Those that I have seen, no generally used with 1 to 2 years.

Hi Leo another nice little video in which you have tactfully identified some really important issues. I shall be a little less tactful. Exodus from towns and cities into the countryside has been going on for many years people being willing to travel several hours each way from home to work and back. Derbyshire villages are full of people who have moved into the country from areas where property prices are higher. This enables them to buy properties here that are far superior to what they have left. I cant blame them, and if I had the money I might do the same. But there are potential problems and these have arisen in other parts of the country. One of the saddest impacts I saw when living in the Peak was the way house values were pushed up and out of the range of local people whose children could not afford to have a home in the village in which they were raised. You have mentioned environmental destruction and building on green fields sites but there are also others. Doctors for example, we all know how hard it is to get an appointment. Schools are another, cash strapped local authorities are slow to extend or build schools. Traffic is also a major problem, more people = more vehicles, are the local roads up to it? The list goes on and I would advise the good people of Buxton to think about this and if they don't like it, do something otherwise before they know it then it will be a done deal and its too late to complain once the trees are felled and the foundations dug. Thanks for another video, looking forward to the next. 👍
@Leock
@Leock 7 күн бұрын
I agree with everything you’ve said and I’ve seen exactly that happen in my life time around here. It’s just unfortunate there’s not a lot we can do to stop prices rising and it’s an annoying swings and roundabouts with services because they need more people for the tax to provide more but it just means it’s always one step behind where it should be. Thank you very much for watching and commenting :)

Hi Leo, another nice barrow full of rubbish collected, well done! The argument about boundaries has been going on since 1951 when it PDNP was first created that's 73 years ago and things have changed massively since. People have argued about the title saying "National Park" is not appropriate. They have argued about what industry should be allowed, whether the boundary should be reviewed, extended or reduced. They have argued about planning permission, "its too strict or not strict enough", where housing should be allowed and a multitude of other issues. In short this is an issue that will never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. The National Parks seem to generate arguments if its any consolation the same thing goes in in all the other National Parks as well. 🤣

Thank you! I have many friends who live in the peaks and in the cities around so I’ve heard both sides of with rules being too strict or not strict enough. The term “The Peak District” has been in use well before the establishment of the National Park. I have railway posters from the 1930’s and guidebooks from the late 19th century that use that specific term. There is no agreement between the books as to where its borders were, but all include the upland areas of NW Derbyshire, and most include surrounding parts of Cheshire and Staffordshire, and sometimes Yorkshire. In all, Buxton was firmly within the Peak District. Earlier books tend to just use the term “The Peak” or “The Peaks”, drawn from the medieval “Hundred of the High Peak”, an administrative region that was abolished with the local government act of 1894 or the former “Forest of the High Peak” - a royal hunting reserve established in the area following the Norman conquest. Some will also refer to the Pecsaetan, the (rather obscure) Anglo-Saxon tribe that used to occupy the area. I would guess that the specific term “The Peak District” as opposed to say “The High Peak” or “Peaks” emerged as a marketing term used by railway companies and booksellers during the growth of domestic tourism in the Victorian era and thus entered common usage. As mentioned above, its boundaries well not well defined, but certainly included Buxton.

Hi. As a lifelong local to the Peak District I would say that I agree that the national park boundry is "The Peaks". The reason that Buxton and the surrounding area is controlled by High peak council is that the council is named after the medieval "Hundred of the High peak" which was an area designated by the Barmote (Lead mining) court. In fact High peak council didn't even exist untill the mid 70s which is over 20 years after the National Park was designated.

@cakeskin3333

Thing is when it comes to “where is the Peak District” is that, well, lots of things are hard to define. Forgetting the national park boundary’s and just looking at where the peaks are gives a much larger area than what the park covers. High tor near Matlock is a huge peak but isn’t in the park. Geographically though it’s very much contiguous with the Peak District landscape. Us humans like to give very defined boundary’s to where one thing starts and stops but a question like “is it hilly enough to be considered Peak District” can in some places be very hard to answer

Very true, geologically speaking the Peak District park is odd because it’s split between limestone and grit (white and dark peaks) and of course people associate the peaks with hills even though it’s not that hilly and definitely not any with big peaks.

The point where the peak district starts can be measured by the amount of traffic parked in awkward places by the road: the closer you are to the centre the more likley a tourist is to just abandon there car in the middle of the road to go for a walk 🤐

The last thing the Monsal trail needs is even more bikes. As a walker you need to be continually on alert to avoid being run down. A footpath between Buxton and Blackwell would be nice. There are various places in the White Peak where a short length of footpath between two existing ones would be useful, you can spot the estates which don't want it to happen.

As far as I’m aware the Peak District is the name of the national park and nothing else but Buxton is surrounded by it and not included because it would have disrupted the quarrying industry here so when it was marked out in the 1950’s they just carved us out.

No need to reverse into sidings at Buxton surely. There appears to be plenty of room to build an extra platform between the lines on the curve linked by a walkway to the existing station, or even move the station altogether, remove the lines and sell off the land for redevelopment to pay for it. But everything I've read about this is suggesting direct trains from Manchester to Derby?
@Leock
@Leock 19 күн бұрын
The station bit is complicated now we used to have two identical stations and the second was the lines to Derby and Ashbourne so we are missing a link to connect the existing station to track heading that way. The land currently vacant I believe is in the councils hands for a mega Gp centre so they can remove all the small existing ones but who knows if they’ll ever do that. And the whole peak rail thing I think will stay in limbo forever I doubt anyone in charge will finally say yes to reopening the line to Matlock and thus to Derby.

The VLR concept was to reduce the considerable cost of infrastructure in current light rail systems. Following in house testing, the next step would be tests at a non-critical location. In this case using existing freight lines. The location here would be suitable to prove the concept before incurring further expenditure at an urban location, so it may not just be a mad scheme for a status symbol. Note that the London Underground carried out trials of automatic train operation on the lightly used Woodford-Hainault shuttle before using on the Victoria Line so to me, it makes sense.

I think you are a great Lad Leo, you are a credit to Buxton I only wish we had more like you, perhaps then our country would like like it was before plastic bags and bottles, cans and McDonalds wrappers (you can guess my vintage). What I really hate however is something you see everywhere while walking. It is an offence to leave dog mess on the ground after Fido does what comes naturally, so the answer is to pick it up in a bag and then bin the bag. Why then do people pick it up in a bag then dump the bag, hang it on a gate or a branch of a tree? Dog mess is at leave organic and will eventually disappear, a plastic bag will not. There todays rant is over, keep up the good work.
