Great video, thank you for sharing! How do you prototype counters? Like if each player needs to track a number of 2-digit prices? So the game needs some 20 price counters.

Imo mechanics cant be taboo to copy. It would all be about as absurd as saying im using 6 sided dice or a deck of cards so you cant. Always goes back to simple phrase: treat people how you want to be treated yourself.

That magic the gathering example only works if they are using decks of equivalent strength, or the new player has a stronger deck. The element of deck building usually means that a person who has been playing and collecting for years will likely build a better deck than a new player with fewer cards. That being the case, it is actually pretty rare a new player beats an old one. Even in a draft situation, the older player has more knowledge and strategic experience, so they will again likely build a better deck. The only time I saw new players beat old ones is when playing commander/edh with preconstructed decks or decks built to be equivalent strength

Honestly for prototyping, Image generation AI ist one of the most convinient things to come out in the last few years. Its not a lot of work and you can give prototypes so much more flavour in only a few hours.

It was a weird ruling (i think pac man) that a game mechanic can't be protected. But can you imagine how few games would exist if everyone had to be original.

In no case does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work.

Re-watching this because I remember it was reassuring to me to be "very inspired" by an existing mechanism/element. BTW, I like to call it a "yoink" when I get a great idea form a game I've played.

Your last point about cutting a rule out of the game is in fact very apt. In fact I have made a few changes to the game I have been designing based on this exact point. During initial playtests my wife was always asking me 'when' and in 'what order' she needed to do a certain thing. I ended up changing the few cards and rules regarding this for ease. If SHE had to keep asking, so would other players. Secondly I have this mechanic of 'guarding' cards which I won't go into detail here. However, it was suppose to be done at the END of your turn but my wife would always just do it when she played that specific card. I ended up changing the rule to say that you 'guard' the card straight away and it changed the flow of the game for the better. It also cut down the list of actions a player would do in order on their turn which definitely makes the game simpler to explain. Ps I enjoyed the video so I will check out more on your channel.

I agree with point #3 about us not redesigning the games by telling them to integrate a whole new mechanic. But how about a smaller suggestion about how to fix a smaller aspect of one of the mechanics so that it works closer to the experience that the designer is trying to create?
@onethousandxp
@onethousandxp 2 жыл бұрын
Smaller suggestions are generally ok, and especially if you can preface them with how the original mechanism made you feel and explain what it is you're trying to "fix." This way, your suggestions comes with context.

Where does the American war on the passive voice come from? The English language has used the passive for centuries in all sorts of situations without fearing that it sounds weak or confusing. In some circles an ability to phrase one’s thoughts in both forms freely indicates intelligence and a good education…

I think that if you even ask yourself the question "Is this just a ripoff of something else?", you'll be in good shape. I mean, the opposite of that could be knowingly and shamelessly reskinning an existing game like Monopoly and calling "Pomonoly" or something. Don't do that.

I wasn't sure I could paint minis-I'm legally blind. And I've a little story mode that might help other new painters… The way my eyes work … well, if you see 4k HDR10 … my eyes work like a crappy old 4:3 era LCD. The resolution is low, the details are washed out, and in my case, I replaced the backlight with the freakin' bat signal. So everything's way too bright, and details aren't there without a LOT of contrast, which unpainted minis just don't have. But I can totally appreciate an expertly painted mini close-up. And am floored by it! What made me think I could actually paint minis was some dude who painted an old HeroQuest mummy. He primed in off-white and pulled out a brown ink wash and said, "now, I'm going to paint this mummy very carefully…" *SCRIBBLE*SCRIBBLE*SCRIBBLE* "Done, and ready for the table!" It was. He did paint the details after that, but that's when I realized that if the best I got was roughing out the major colors and applying some contrast with a wash, it was gonna be good enough. The problem is that I can't see the details on unpainted plastic well enough to do even that, possibly, without the base coat and wash. Solution: Zenithal highlight with the primer! That's a fancy artist word for priming the model in black, and then dusting the model from above only with white (so, from the zenith!) What that gives you is shades of gray with highlights and shadows. What I need! The other thing I saw was someone decide to "fix" a prepainted mini. Turns out these have a lot more detail than you (or certainly I) realized, it's just all painted with a single flat color so it gets lost. You have to wash and then varnish these things before they'll take paint, but you can instantly improve one of these minis by doing that, painting a wash or two over it, and then adding a few highlights. And then I had a strategy: Zenithal highlight so I could see the details, whether or not I was ever gonna be able to paint them. Flat colors like a prepaint, ignoring any details I don't have the skill to paint until I develop the skill to NOT ignore them. That's prepaint quality right there, and that'd be respectable for a guy who literally needed a white cane in the sunlight to walk around to the back side of the building to get a Subway. And I can already do better because I've been practicing washes and drybrushing with craft paints on terrain. If I can do that, you can do that. It doesn't have to come out like the KZbin artists' amazing results with wet-blended and airbrushed blends and eyes so detailed you'd think you were looking at anime… Good enough for the table is forget the eyes, you can't see them on the table anyway! If you want to paint, you can paint.

Love the channel and they are really great videos, honestly when you compare the two miniatures one that had the wash and the one that didn't I really couldn't tell the difference and I was watching this on my big screen TV. But it could be me some things I just don't notice, when I worked at a movie theater and the projectionists wanted me to check out the screen because they had put in a brand new bulb into the projector and they said it was going to be brighter and look better but I couldn't tell the damn difference. The mini that had the wash it looked a little shinier but that's all I could tell to be honest, again not trying to say anything negative at all I love the channel It's awesome

Thanks for the kind words! The difference is easier to tell in person, but if you need to do a bunch of miniatures really quickly and aren't too worried about it, skip the washes if you like!
