IWT. Worse venue ever, however. Thank goodness they really brought it that night to make up for it.

I read that Bob was deeply touched that Jerry didn't shun him during his evangelical Christian phase. Apparently lots of old friends did.

This might interest you, fella way out west by the name of Garcia. Turns out, this Garcia fella has another handle, or two. Some people call him Elijah, some others call him John. And some other folks - I mean the alchemists, the ones who are never sober- they call him Elias Artista, Elijah the Artist. "Elias Artista - A Precursor of the Messiah in Natural Science" - Herbert Breger: The history of Elias artista is the history of an almost forgotten utopian concept in natural science. The advent of the modern age brought with it a widespread belief amongst physicians and chemists, particularly in Germany, that God in a not too distant future would be sending a person, capable of revealing all nature’s secrets to humanity, that person being Elias artista. His disclosures were to coincide directly with the end of this iniquitous world and the beginning of a messianic age (a golden world or the millennium). Paracelsus, Book Concerning the Tincture of Philosophers: Nothing is concealed that shall not be revealed. There are many more secrets concerning the transmutation, though they are little known, for if they are revealed to someone their fame is not immediately common. With this art, the Lord bestows the wisdom to keep it secret until the advent of Elias Artist. Then shall be revealed what has been concealed. Eirenaeus Philalethes, An Open Entrance to the Closed Palace of the King: My Book is the precursor of Elias, designed to prepare the Royal way of the Master; and would to God that by its means all men might become adepts in our Art - for then gold, the great idol of mankind, would lose its value, and we should prize it only for its scientific teaching. Virtue would be loved for its own sake. Walter Pagel, The Paracelsian Elias Artista and the Alchemical Tradition: To Paracelsus Helias represents various features of an ideal through which enlightenment and happiness will descend upon future generations and lift the veil of obscurity which still blinds him and his age. Helias is the perfect adept to come . . . Paracelsus’s Helias artista with his messianic associations and the vision of a super-chemistry coming true in a distant future ties up with a strong mediaeval tradition.

Wildly underrated show - I had this on cassette way, way back. It must have been like 25th generation recording - terrible quality - but I cherished it. Jerry’s playing shines bright on Deal. Is it the best? I’m not to say, and he’s missing notes left and right, but man, he’s fuckin goin for it. It is my personal favorite. This was a tremendous show. Stellar night in RI.

The reason they were better in Feb of 1980 was because they had Johnny de Fonseca on drums. Enrico didn’t have anything on Johnny, RIP. That band was untouchable - and often times it’s the drummer who takes a good band and makes them great

Ned Lagin did their Seastones thing, providing the crowd with a bit of interstitial “electronic cybernetic biomusic.” Whatever. I thought about doing a little research on Seastones, but it’s just not that interesting - it’s like Space without Jerry performed by music theory eggheads. Phil and Ned released a studio album with some of that material in 1975. I don’t recommend it

I have pretty much all Garcia recordings commercial and otherwise that circulate. This Oswego gig has some of his best jams of all time. A cold snowy night in February. Check out the Money Honey and After MId>El Rigby>After Mid madness. Bonkers. 1980 was a monster for JGB.
