Hi Eugene - At 5:40 when the Chaffee takes out your Puma, what was your thought process in regards to not recce'ing with the Puma? You mentioned that you were riding your luck however using recce with the Puma would have expended the Chaffee's action that turn and ensured the Puma's survival to fight another turn. Did you believe at that moment in the battle you had enough gas in the tank to overcome the Americans without the Puma?
@lessonsfromthefront14 сағат бұрын
Hi Kyle, yes, the battle was pretty much won and the potential loss of the Puma would not change the outcome, but if my Puma survived and nailed his Chaffee, the game would have ended sooner. Usually, I'd play it safe, but in this case, the risk potentially allowed for a chance of an even quicker victory.

This is the standard that other battle reports should be! A good intro, map, arrows(!) and sound effects and final conclusion and explanation of rules. He was unlucky with the AT grenades but I agree you had the better battleplan. Howwver, was he imn AMBUSH for when you come over the ridge? I would have thought that would have given him the advantage when your units crested the ridge line in small groups. I do think the machine gun fire doesn't need to be repeated for the same unit, but this is the standard I would want to meet if I ever do one. I would like some details of the army on WHY you choose what you did and then an afterward on did the units do what you wanted them to do, but that is a small quibble and would a lot of extra time to the video. 10 minutes is a good length for a report.
@lessonsfromthefront5 күн бұрын
@@comstr thank you so very much for this and I'll consider adding thoughts on units. I think Alfred was unlucky at times. Had his mortars ranged in on my regulars on the crest, I'd have been forced to either withdraw or push harder. His mortars were on ambush, and weren't able to range in.

The Marder series was a great example of German adaption and upgunning. One of the key reason Hitler wanted to invade Czech territory was for tank factories like those run by Skoda, as the Czech 38t was a very good, reliable chassis format and using captured soviet guns meant that they could be adapted into effective mobile artillery bases, allowing for supporting units to keep up with the high speed panzer advance. Just a shame fuel and ammo trucks weren't as fast.

The Stuart preformed both well and badly in operation crusader. When you compare it to other British tanks in the battle, it massively out preformed cruiser tanks like the crusader. And it's speed and reliability are part of the reason the battle is considered a pyrrihic allied victory rather than a draw, as Stuart units were able to continue to apply pressure and take ground when all other British armoured units were effectively out of action and the axis were themselves shaky.

Question - what armour did the South Africans use in the Western Desert or were the formations mainly recce armoured cars. Great video very informative more please

The Saffers were still infantry division in North Africa and after being mauled at SR, they were equipped and trained for Italy as Armoured, mostly Sherman.

I am looking to do SA for Bolt Action, especially 1st Division looking at the 1st Duke of Edinburgh Own Rifles ... if they were an INF DIvision then in Western Desert they would have been supported by INF Tanks. Are there any named SA regts that used armoured car if there were no armoured regts until Italy or were all SA troops infantry or artillery... many thanks
@lessonsfromthefrontАй бұрын
All SA units used the M-H (Marmon Herrington) in the desert. The recce units used the armoured car version. Artillery observers, the carrier platoons etc. used the turret less version. In simple terms wherever bren carriers (the universal carrier) were used by commonwealth forces, SA forces were using the M-H instead.

A 3 hour documentary on the battle of gazala and a 9 hour series of documentaries on operation crusader.
