You need to listen to the a capella version of this where you can really hear the vocal intricacies. All the vocals are Mike, btw ETA: I have always known this as Heartbreak Hotel and they only started calling it This Place Hotel to distinguish from Elvis's song

I come from the generation where this was the most requested and played song, at dances.....in the 8th grade....while all the teachers chaperoned....in the school gym. Times were wild 😅

Here's the thing with Maj's reactions- I'll be enjoying them, having a good time, and then he'll turn around and say something about my generation like "y'all danced back then..!" that'll have me wanting to go to a bush and just weep. 😢😢😢😂😂😂❤❤

I believe this was her longest number 1 hit. J-Lo at this time wasn’t worldwide just yet. She was suppose to tour on this album with Janet but she was selected for a role in a movie and had to drop out of tour rehearsals altogether.

Great reaction, young brother. I love how you be getting into it. 1. The instrumental breakdown was strategic. The Jacksons had written and produced this album themselves and it was important to them that everyone understood how incredible they were as musicians. Tito's guitar solo is iconic 2. This is vocally basically a solo song. Michael does all the vocals and he wrote the song himself 3. The point you're making about vocals is what people often call "vocal stylists." These are vocalists who do more than what the melody line requires. You are definitely correct that that is Mike and Stokley. 4. The song was originally called Heartbreak Hotel, but they were worried it would be confused with the Elvis song so they changed the name. Here's a live performance from the Triumph Tour, which is the album the song is from kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3q5aHmCd911Z9k

Usher was actually her opening act on the tour for this album. He was only 19 at the time, though. Don’t listen to the other comments. The Blackstreet remix sucked a lot of the magic out of the song. I didn’t care for it.

Bruh, contradicting statement. ‘I know Janet & J-Lo were IT girls…’., then you state clearly that you don’t know when the video & song dropped. So that cancels your previous statement. If we don’t know the timeline, then we don’t really know who was what. You’re half right. Janet was ascending top shelf at that point, & this video from her 5th album, was part of establishing her sexier image. We all can point out J-Lo now cause we know who she is. She wasn’t J-Lo @ the time this video was made. People barely knew who she was. Some may have recognized her as a ‘Flygirl’ from the t.v. show in Living Color, but she was basically unknown & not known to publicly have aspirations as a solo artist or actress. This song dropped in like ‘93, the same year J-Lo left In Living Color. Her 1st movie role was like 2 yrs later. Her breakout role was the lead in the movie Selena, which gained her respect & awards, maybe ‘96 & 1st album dropped ‘99. So Janet was becoming an ‘it girl’ & J-Lo was making her way. Flash forward almost 30 yrs, & J-Lo is one of most successful individuals in show bidness, definitely highest paid of Latin descent. The only artist to have a No. 1 hit & movie at the same time. Crazy acting & now production resume, & is worth almost half billion, definitely the most lucrative career out of In Living Color Production. J Foxx is clearly best actor though.

These Janet reactions by younger ppl warm and break my heart simultaneously. Reactions like "how did she get jlo in her video?" prove Les Moonves' cancellation of her worked. Jennifer was one of her backup dancers in a time when it was the gig EVERY dancer dreamed of. Janet was a force of nature for over 20 years in the industry, the highest paid artist who birthed 2 generations of female performers. Now those performers are more well known than her. 😢
