This was a great overview of the game mechanism and features but I wouldn’t call it a review. How did you find the rulebook? I ask because archon has a track record of having some of the worst rulebooks. As someone who has heroes 3 while I like the game I can confirm it’s the worst rulebook I’ve come across in 20+ years, it was so bad the fans of the game had to make a separate rulebook that the devs now point people to. Is this rulebook a step in a more positive direction?

Prototypes are hard with this. It definitely was far from the best early rulebook I've used, but it's also literally a word document. At least when I learned. I believe a rulebook is linked in the campaign page though so you can check if there's been updates.

1. Not really liking the art work on this or the look. 2. Never a fan with mixing dice and miniatures and tokens as resources and gaming pieces. 3. 4x games really I would wait for actual play through game reviews so its hard to risk backing If this makes retail I think I would give it a better look. Really there just something off from the way it looks. It might play well and be great but it just has a messy and clutter look to it. Game length is never an issue with me when it comes to a 4x epic space game though I do like multiple ways a game could end.

Honestly I would have preferred simple tokens with really cool artworks on them over all these miniatures. It makes the box (boxes with expansions) so much bigger than required and I don't think they really improve the readability of the game. Not to mention that they could have skimmed off a hundred dollar or so off the price. I really wish they would offer a pledge without the miniatures.

@TheKingofAverage
@TheKingofAverage 3 күн бұрын
I actually kind of disagree here. For any genre that involves knowing where and what is in a map location among many groups (often players) I find it much easier to see with miniatures. Standees are flat to half of players and so not visible and tokens blend in too much with the map/other tokens. There are a lot of games that have unneeded minis, but I feel this would play worse not better without them.
@portwills
@portwills 3 күн бұрын
@ hey I see your point and that's perfectly valid, but colored tokens with cool artworks as an optional pledge is something I would have gone for. I carry my games a lot in airplanes and usually the smaller the footprint the better. I can't think of any game where miniatures were a plus for me, so I'm always glad when they offer standees (or tokens in this case) as an option.

@@TheKingofAverage yes, exactly. I've not looked at the latest Gal Civ, but I've played the previous ones. It did have tactical combat something never included in Gal Civ, but the modern MoO is very light as 4x video games go. Its really not much more in depth than the board game appears to be. You'd do the largest size map in 10-15 hours, where as stuff like Stellaris. Gal Civ, or Polaris sector you can spend 200 hours on a map and not be close to a final victory condition with the larger sizes and are vastly more complex in terms of layers of mechanics, resource management and thinking. Which isn't to say that's a bad thing, its not a game I'd consider top of the genre but its very easy to play and come back to because its so simple. Those others I have to spend 20 hours relearning every time I come back to them, they are great but they ask so much more from you.

@@TheKingofAverage The newer one is actually a very faithful adaptation of MOO II (with the exception of the combat system), which is something of a mixed blessing - MOO II was a great game but one whose complexity probably grew in the telling, and what's more when you're remaking a game from 1996 in 2016 it's fair to assume that players' expectations are a bit higher thanks to all the extra stuff computers can handle - it was releasing into a game universe where Distant Worlds existed, but was closer to Sins of a Solar Empire - which is an RTS in 4x clothing, with the simplifications to managing resources that implies. MOO games set the foundation for the planet types and exploration systems in all subsequent space 4xes, and the customisation of ships allowed by their tech system was probably unparalleled (and sadly lacking in the 2016 game). Oddly, the older game seemed to handle larger combats and I think did so better. But as a resource management game MOO II was paper thin - indeed probably a step back from the slider system of its predecessor, if more user-friendly - and Conquer the Stars is almost an exact clone in that regard. It also doesn't have character levelling that I recall.
@crimsonsun2000
@crimsonsun2000 3 күн бұрын
@@TheKingofAverage I think both have a place. I love complexity and granular detail both in video games and board games. But I'm also practical. I backed Stellaris if it turns up its going to be a game that like EU will eat an entire long weekend to play a full 8 eras. That's a experience much like TI is an all day affair. Those games are truly special and occupy a very special place in my heart, but they require organising and scheduling making it so its a very rare and special occurrence, while something that plays in an afternoon, well I can arrange that any Saturday, meaning it will see 10 times the plays that a longer experience will. I might love the longer game more, but I won't play it any where near as often and I'll enjoy the shorter game so there's absolutely room for both. The same is true for video gaming but as its a solo experience its a little easier to adjust to the intense games especially when they are new, but I could load up MoO now and play half a map with no difficulty. So ease of access in both media forms is very important to us all. This is a pretty easy back for me, I think the price is low for whats on offer and I adore these types of games so its an easy sell. The one I'm watching you might well get sent is Hearts of Iron? I won't back that prior to the pledge manager anyway, because I've never had a SFG production I was like this is a must have game, but its a IP I love in a genre I've not got well represented in my collection, so I'm super interested in that.

It's going to retail, but the stretch goals are exclusive to crowdfunding. The price, though, will be similar in retail after all, because local shipping will be cheaper, although theoretically the price of the game and its expansions will be higher then (but that's not always the case, sometimes it's just about the same and even cheaper at times). So I would say the only advantage of crowdfunding is the stretch goals (which actually will also be available on the publisher's website in Poland at a later date and during gaming conventions).
@OPMDK
@OPMDK 3 күн бұрын
@@portwills so for me in Canada and at the abysmal USD to CAD exchange rate, the $$ shipping usually balances with all the stretch goals but I just looked at the 9/12 stretch goals and personally I don’t see US$40-60 worth of stretch goals. Also the expansions seem to add SO much new gameplay that without them the game almost seems like it’s incomplete. I am trying to be more conservative about my crowd funding as I’ve backed over 100 games over the years now and the value just keeps going down and, other than standee versions, costs just keep going up; so despite being a MOOII player in my youth I just don’t know about this one.

Back again! This time, the video game industry. The video game industry's always been big business. Atari was owned by Warner Communications; they built Atari into a half-billion dollar company before the market collapsed in '83-84. Coleco & Tandy were leather craft companies; they got into video games & computers because the industries were growing, & because it seemed like a good investment. Nintendo was a card company in the early 20th century, but by the 60's they were trying basically anything to make money. Toys worked best, so the focused on that. When video games became popular, they moved into that industry because it was the natural extension of what they already did. Parker Brothers, Mattel, & Milton Bradley also got into video games, for the same reason. Mattel & Milton Bradley actually made their own game systems, for awhile. Sega distributed slot machines & vending machines. Bally made pinball machines. Both got into video games because video games seemed to be the natural extension of their current industries. Sony, Phillips, & Microsoft were electronics firms; they got into the video game industry because, again, it was a natural extension of things they already did.

Back! With a more serious comment: Board Gaming has always been about big business. Most of the major game manufacturers were printing companies looking for something to sell. Some were toy companies; a few other were major manufacturers of other goods. Milton Bradley & the McLoughlin Brothers were a lithographers; Western Publishing printed comics & books. Transogram was an iron-on transfer company that expanded into toy manufacturing. 3M made (and makes) a little bit of everything. Selchow & Righter were wholesalers or distributors, who focused on games. Parker Brothers started as a game company, but the first three or four games they made were card games about business; George S. Parker was a business man. Avalon Hill started as a game company, but they went bankrupt in the 60's, & had to get investors to bail them out. Moreover, major conglomerates have been involved in board games for over 50 years; Parker Brothers was bought by General Mills in the 60's. Milton Bradley maintained their independence till the '80's, but they also expanded into other industries, like educational supplies & electronics, & they bought other companies, like Playschool/Halsam. I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I suppose I want to say that you need business sense to survive, to continue to make & sell games. It's not wrong, as long as you give people a fair deal. On rare occasions, the skills needed to design good games & the skills needed to market said games may be given to the same person, but usually that's not the case, so a game company needs both passionate business men & passionate game designers to thrive.
