23:07 As a current construction electrician with 4+ years of experience and vocational education in the electrical trade who ships out to boot camp March 3rd, why do you insist on not picking/hoping for EM? Im currently going in with the mindset of EM first, ET second, MM third on my wish list when that time comes.
@2F2FPod
@2F2FPod 3 күн бұрын
I guess it's important to caveat this and say that it can be dependent on platform / class of ship. However, generally speaking, EMs own SO much of the ship or boat and, especially on older classes of submarine, their equipment is so prone to failure that they almost always have significantly more work to do than any other rate. The work that electricians do is dirty, like MMs, but also can be technical and detailed, like ETs. They are "the best of both worlds" if by "best" you really mean, "most frustrating parts". They also own several periodic maintenance items that are gigantic, ship-wide, high-profile events which are often stressful and can be dangerous. They have copious amounts of nuclear and non-nuclear maintenance (on submarines, specifically), because there aren't any non-nuke electricians on board. Electricians also always had the lowest re-enlistment bonuses and slowest advancement for the 10 years we were in, but that may very well have changed by now. There was this weird phenomenon where senior electricians (E-8s and above) weren't getting out of the Navy / rotating to shore tours normally. It had something to do with how EDMC tours were being assigned or some other bureaucratic nonsense like that. That has also hopefully worked itself out by now. I don't know very much about you or your goals/circumstances. If you are currently a construction electrician with plenty of experience, I don't think you're going to gain very much practical knowledge from the Navy. Your experience may make you a "hot-runner" early in your career but that will dwindle with time. If you're joining the Navy to find a new career or learn new skills, I would suggest choosing one of the other rates. The theory that you must know already to do electrical work will still help you at various points throughout the training pipeline and occasionally throughout your career. If you're joining the Navy because you love what you do now but the Navy is going to pay you more money / give you some kind of "adventure" you may be seeking - then you might enjoy life as an electrician, just recognize that it's more difficult to enjoy the adventure you're on when you're stuck on the boat cleaning a motor generator while even other nukes are already at home. There is also a chance that you end up on a newer class of submarine or go to the surface fleet instead. There's potential for life to be better in those circumstances - EMs own less of the electrical distribution equipment. I can't speak in very much detail about those cases, as I have very limited experience with either. Good luck and feel free to send us an email if you want to get more into personal specifics!

Thanks for your service, Nukes!! I went through Class 77-04 at NTC Orlando, and then S1C in CT. It sounds like Uncle Sam clamps down pretty hard these days. He's just protecting his investment. Most 18 YOs don't know their collective asses from a hole in the ground, so they NEED to have their opportunities for potentially self-destructive behavior curtailed. I didn't go to boot camp until 3 weeks after turning 21, and I'm sure I would have messed it up if I had joined up right out of high school. But it was a helluva education, and I made a career out of it. I got in on the ground floor of a brand new BWR, and ended up staying 35 years.

The irony of a 20-year Major, who is going to assume the highest military position in the pentagon, talking about DEI hire is rich. He's woefully unqualified for this position, and as a combat veteran myself, his combat experience is honorable, but pales in comparison to what is actually needed. He's just another loyalist lapdog who is expected to do whatever Trump wants. We could potentially be seeing the hiring of our own Rohm. They are blinding people with "culture war" nonsense while weaking the US system from within.
@PEN0311
@PEN0311 Ай бұрын
He's a 20 year Major because we should all know that the promotion scale for NG/Reserves is not the same as AD. DEI is antithetical to meritocracy. Meritocracy is bedrock principle in military culture. Its what undergirds the military ranking system. DEI does not prioritize merit when considering decisions of advancement or promotion. As for Hegseths qualification, I have my doubts about that but he is a combat veteran with small unit leadership experience. He also has experience running 2 veteran advocacy NGO's. All of this is enhanced with an Ivy League education. He has a perspective that favors the junior ranks of enlisted and officers. My worry is he lacks the experience needed at the strategic level. My hope is this is tempered by a complementary deputy SECDEF. Hegserh was nominated because his agenda aligns with DJTs, he has not had been "corrupted" by the Washington careerists. He's an outsider and does not belong to the bureaucracy. As an author of two books on the military, he has an insight into the personnel issues involved the Forces.

@PEN0311 He's completely unqualified for this position, but he's being forced in there by Trump, he is a DEI hire, just in a different color. The qualifications he has is that Trump saw him on TV. Stop trying to justify such an obviously bad decision. It's embarrassing.

As a Former Marine who served in the mid to late 90's our bootcamp and Marine Combat Training (non-infantry MOS') or ITB for Infantry based MOS' were always gender segregated until recently because the females had different physical standards and they still do. They pushed the first female through Army Ranger school when she shouldn't have made it. When an Air Force General openly says to stop hiring "White men" as pilots openly on video that is open discrimination. It is allowable because he went after the only unprotected class in the US a "Straight White Man". DEI should be nowhere near the battlefield or in our military and everything should be merit based. I think you need some Veterans who are infantry based to give an honest perspective. If women were hald to the exact same standard far more would fail Boot Camp in the Marines and Army than people realize. Forget about Special Forces etc.. I attended my nephews Graduation at Parris Island and the current Military standards are in the tank. I had a feeling the answer to your question was going to be ITS, but I asked a couple of former SECF guys (who have been on the podcast), and here is exactly what they said... "ITS. No question. They can actually get civilian IT certs and can use that experience as years for network admin and security. SECF I would say is "cooler" because youre dealing with Navigation, Sonar, Weapons, or Comms on the subs, so no matter what you are directly involved in the mission. It's stressful but rewarding. But as far as transferred experience goes, civilians typically don't need Sonar techs, Quartermasters, or Torpedo/Missile systems experience." And... "Definitely ITS. Secf is only good if you want to keep working on navy equipment after you get out haha"

My prototype experience ( I’m EM2/ SW) was mostly good, save one hugely bad incident. I had a SPU for a staff advisor. For some reason, he was more bitter and resentful than most of the sea returnees. Time comes for my first watch with him as my over instruction-electrical operator. I don’t know if they still do pre-watch discussions, but they were a big deal at the MARF plant in 2003. I went to him for the pre-watch. He told me to go away. He said he didn’t have time. Repeat x3. Dude just wouldn’t take the time to do the pre-watch with me. An hour before watch and I’m now frustrated and angry. No other staff will do the prewatch with me cuz they’re not the over-instruction. I forge the signature and turn it in to the guy when I report for the watch. I told him someone from another section did it with me. He turns me in for “lack of integrity”. Fast forward two weeks later- I’m standing in front of the plant master chief. He’s giving me the standard speech about integrity, honor, etc. It concludes with “I’ll see you at XOI.” Next day, we have a command sweep urinalysis. Results come back pretty quick. Turns out that guy popped positive for a bunch of stuff. He was shuffled out of the navy pretty quickly.My case quietly went away after that. I never heard anything else. Weird. Anyway, I enjoy the podcast. Ya’ll keep it up. It’s refreshing to hear real nukes talk honestly about the good, bad, and ugly of the program. My two cents: I had a mostly positive experience in prototype and wouldn’t trade it for anything. I think some changes are definitely due. I did not STAR re-enlist, but had a few friends who did. They all went to prototype for the first shore duty. Apparently, things sucked for staff at both protypes around 2007-2010, when most of them rotated out.

My ship and his boat were both at Fleet Week Miami in 2011. He showed up 4 hours late because he had to put the reactor in standby or some nonsense. It made my bitching about being on sea and anchor sound pathetic. He also talked about only getting two hours of sleep a night on a regular basis while he got his qualifications and his dolphins. My question is, was he a go getter or do they try to work you all to death?

It definitely sounds like he was a go-getter during quals. It's pretty typical to operate on 4-5 hours of sleep during quals. Not getting off the ship for at least 4 hours after pull-in is actually on the short end! There are so many things that have to happen before the shutdown can even start. 🙄

There was no Suite upgrade once in Power School when i was there. All the new kids from boot camp got the bigger rooms while us 3rd classes stayed in our A school barrack.

@@2F2FPod Also did not receive this upgrade in 2017-2018. I do remember a couple people moving around though, so it maybe something I just was unlucky about.

I was in T track for 3 months as duty driver. Definitely best watch, you listen to your own music as you drive and can relax on site/beq while you’re not busy
