Also, if you want to know what we did in SSES? Mostly watch movies and TV shows. Some geeks would read a book.

As a 27 y.o. incoming nuke yet to ship out, this was one of the more helpful podcasts especially the part at the end, I just need to know if it’s worth it or not.

Being an older nuke definitely has its benefits and it's drawbacks. You will have perspective that almost everyone else lacks, and be able to be the adult in the room. But it can also be alienating if the division is all young guys (like mine often was) and your interests don't align. Good luck and reach out if you need anything!

12:11 I just finished the Submarine O-pipeline in August with a former ELT and an EMN who both went STA21. They definitely seemed to breeze through Prototype since they finished 8 weeks early and thus joined my class for the remainder of our schooling (SOBC), but I can’t speak to their experience at Power School

Exactly! Definitely someone to be said about REALLY learning the stuff but it has to be so easy the 2nd time around.

Whether nukes are respected or not depends on how many other nukes that person knows. I know lots of prior nukes, so I reserve judgement initially.

Well put!

Hmmm, I always thought it was secure compartmentalized information. But it’s been over 10 years so maybe my brains rotted and it just makes up shit. Also, my brother was a nuke. My ship and his boat were both at Fleet Week Miami in 2011. He showed up 4 hours late because he had to put the reactor in standby or some nonsense. It made my bitching about being on sea and anchor sound pathetic. He also talked about only getting two hours of sleep a night on a regular basis while he got his qualifications and his dolphins. My question is, was he a go getter or do they try to work you all to death?

It definitely sounds like he was a go-getter during quals. It's pretty typical to operate on 4-5 hours of sleep during quals. Not getting off the ship for at least 4 hours after pull-in is actually on the short end! There are so many things that have to happen before the shutdown can even start. 🙄
