10 years later and this is still relevant, I can’t find anything more toxic than LinkedIn! Even worse than Instagram and TikTok
@VinceFowler
@VinceFowler 3 ай бұрын
While toxic behaviour certainly exists on social platforms, including LinkedIn, the user has the power to curate their network and feed. LinkedIn has a few more resources than other platforms to curate what the user sees... As the old saying goes, "Garbage in, garbage out."

I have no idea, Peter. All I can control is the quality of my own password + 2-factor authentication. I'm not sure who's platform is ever perfectly secure. Even the Canadian Revenue Agency was hacked... I guess LinkedIn is just one of many.

I strongly disagree. It seems that LinkedIn in is a cesspool of base individuals masquerading as knowledgeable individuals, shamelessly selling themselves. I have many complaints about this forum, cheif among them are the psuedo intelligent free instructions for self betterment that basically tell the reader to bring a pencil to the test. But the worst of it is winning a popularity contest to get a job.

You're not wrong, Aaron. The behaviour you're describing does exist on LinkedIn and other platforms. Thankfully, LinkedIn allows me to be selective about who I choose to connect with, and who I see in my feed... thus far less of the behaviours you mention.

Completely agree. I had a manager once tell me how negative I am and quick to shoot down others' ideas. Now, I learned from that that my delivery of these challenges to the original ideas has to come with some enthusiasm for the idea itself, but I still have a natural tendency to quickly think up all the ways a plan could fail. My purpose in that, however, isn't to shoot down the idea or crush someone's contributions; my purpose is to flesh out all the possible scenarios - or those most likely to occur - and pre-empt them with workable solutions so we have a higher likelihood of success. I'm actually a very optimistic person, because when I make a decision to pursue something, I already know it has a reasonably high likelihood of success.

Interesting perspective, Chris. While LinkedIn isn’t the end-all-be-all, it has been an incredible asset for many reasons; job hunting, recruiting, learning, passionate debate... For some, it’s a complete waist of time, for other’s - like me - it’s been a gold mine of rich relationships.

There are a number of "Hey, look at me" strategies... online and off. I would never say it's wrong to not use LinkedIn... it's not the right tool for everyone. I would definitely say there needs to be some kind "Hey, look at me strategy" in play. Which do you use, Bob?

A) We've lost the "hunting" piece because we became gatherers and cultivated agriculture (i.e. farming). B) *"Hunters"* from yester-year may have shit on the market just a wee bit too much. "Go out and make a mess" is something I've heard from quite a few seasoned sales "professionals" (I use the term loosely). Most "hunter" roles today require the sales person to fix the company's damaged reputation. C) Since so much time and effort is used to fix the market's perception of a company's damaged reputation, not much left in the tank to close and cultivate relationships. D) The internet -- much easier to look up shady companies these days. E) Back to the farming piece -- many sales people and small business owners are essentially used for "people farming". Failure rate is, what, 90% for startups? Established organizations inevitably come in and gobble up leftovers and corner the market. #ParetoPrinciple #8020Rule

Hi @SF014. Thanks for watching. Thanks for the feedback and perspective. When I first started in professional sales - 1996, selling photocopiers and fax machines, I was told I had to hunt new business. Then, and maybe even now, it was a general term for outside sales, vs. Inside Sales... people who typically answered incoming calls from prospective buyers. "Farmers" then were more like account managers, people who managed existing accounts and looked for ways to earn addition business in those existing accounts. I like your example of "hunter" and your B explanation. I can see how you would feel that way. I've seen it too. I'm not always super articulate when I record videos off the cuff. What I'm thinking and what I'm saying don't always match up. My brain seems to think faster than my mouth can keep up with. LOL If a business owner was told today - you need to earn X number of clients in the next Y period of time (X and Y vary from business to business, industry to industry), how many could do it? Based on what I've seen over the years, not many. Thus, they hire marketing firms (some great, some not) to assist them in creating more awareness and driving more prospective buyers they way. Even then, the business owner (and/or sales person) often struggles to earn (convert) the interested buyer into a customer. I see this happen all too often. One would think that humans - a species that have been around for some time - would get better and better at earning business (vs. 'getting' business, 'closing' business, 'landing' business, bagging, tagging, nailing, and so on). Too many resort to the quick sale, often using some form of manipulation/aspiration 'techniques', to 'get' another sale. As I reflect back, I was definitely one of those people. Lessons learned. Anyway, sounds like I'm preaching to the choir. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts SF014 PS: In my world, SF means Special Forces ;-)

Vince Fowler Appreciate the response and insights. It's very doable to go out and get new business, but the "trick" is attracting business, which I'm sure you're aware, can only be done through quality word-of-mouth or expensive advertising. Costly advertising is hit-or-miss, and I think we can safely say only a handful of household names (Apple comes to mind) use it effectively. BTW, I've extensively done outside sales and believe I would absolutely crush any inside sales role. I'm big on the "law of attraction" and truly believe an emotional investment in both your product/service and customers (and employees if you have any) is absolutely paramount. If those things aren't present, and you simply prescribe to the "numbers game" (like so many sales people and organizations in general) then there really is no differentiation. Thanks again for the vid. PS - have recruited some IT professionals in the past with various clearances (DoD, TS, etc.). Cheers!

Are you familiar with Simon Sinek's TED Talk, "How great leaders inspire action"? www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en Personally, I've bought into WHY and marketing myself as such. Every time I attend a trade show I see all those 3 mistakes made by so many people all around. I would add to your list 1 more thing. Trade shows are not as busy as back in the day. If you are only "expecting" to do business & to build relationships with the "tourist" (visitors), then you are wasting a huge opportunity by not connecting with the other vendors. Go & visit the other vendors, show actual interest about them & not come to SELL them your stuffs. Develop relationships & connections.
