The illusion is that the pendulum powers that the escapement but it is the escapement that powers the pendulum. That statement clarifies so much. Ditto with the force diagram! Since the period of the pendulum is determined by the fixed length and the acceleration of gravity, but not the amplitude of the swing ( something Galileo discovered) that push does not change the period of the swing.

This is a dead beat escapement...impulse provided by the slope on the pallets... escape wheel stops dead as the pendulum "over swings" ....crutch impulses the pendulum as it crosses centerline
