re: the familiar, I agree that Leigh didn't properly explain why Jewish people were being persecuted in Spain at the time but if you look into anything about the history of the Spanish inquisition it's clear that it was a very dangerous time to be of any Jewish ancestry. Its unfortunate the timing of when this book came out as it could seem to be trivializing Palestinian suffering by focusing on historical Jewish persecution (not to mention Leigh's response to being questioned about Palestine (which I can't find evidence of? but I don't necessarily doubt your sources)). I also thought the book was mostly boring but I thought Luzia's Jewish identity and how her magic manifested through Ladino (a Jewish diaspora language that doesn't have many speakers still today in part because Israel suppresses diaspora languages in favor of Hebrew) was the most thought out and interesting part of the book.
@jennsbookshelf_
@jennsbookshelf_ Ай бұрын
I agree with your take! There are redeemable things about the book for sure, and I agree the bits about Lucia's identity were probably the best done throughout the book. (that's also weird about the leigh bardugo palestine response thing - I'll have to look into it, I remember seeing people stitching her interview response at a tour stop and being outraged, but maybe it's not as big as I remember it being? either way)

🎉Wooo! Congratulations on submitting! I'm super excited for you! Recently, I've been writing my novel by hand (though I'm on break), and in first-person for the first time. Goodness Gracious, the things you learn about your characters when you are so deep in their head 😂. The number of times I'll be writing and a wild ass thought comes out of my girl. Me: 😮 ✋🏿 *Hold up, Beetch, what you say?* Also, I'm curious about your editing process? Or what would you like to see for someone doing your edits? Mine is currently just checking for spelling errors and any weirdly worded sentences. But for when I want to level up in my editing skills, it will be nice to know other people's processes.
@jennsbookshelf_
@jennsbookshelf_ Ай бұрын
@@Ceri_thegnome thank you!!! First person is definitely a whole new kind of battle - I write sooo much easier in third, it just works better for me 🤣 As for my editing process - that depends on the book and what it needs. But when I’m looking for hiring someone as an editor, I hire near the end of the process to help me polish the story to its best level. Someone (like my friend did) who can not only help elevate the story but see it as a whole, see what I’m trying to do and help me get it there, and go in for some little story things (if it’s needed) but mostly that line edit of crafting better sentences and helping the story flow. My friend did a combination of light story and deep line editing which I think is my favourite kind of editing to source out!

Well done on getting your novella finished and edited in such a record amount of time. Good luck with the contest. Hiring writer/editor friends is something that I've done with all of my books, and I've always been lucky to receive such thorough edits. I agree that having someone look at stuff line by line and feel as though they're properly ingrained within the fabric of a piece can prove exceptionally beneficial. It's always good to challenge ourselves. I finished writing a series in 2022 and that proved to be my biggest challenge so far when I realised that the entire first act needed to undergo a complete overhaul to make it more climactic. It took the longest time, but I also think it became some of my best writing on a structural level. Either way, I look forward to hearing more about your authorial journey in future.

Finding friends who edit while really caring is so beautiful! I just read A Second Story and I'm halfway through A Little Luck and that is truly the thing I'd say I noticed the most. And this is ZERO shade to anyone, I just found myself thinking "A careful editor would have caught that," in regards to line level and continuity stuff that any author would have glazed over after writing and reading it a million tines. An editor's job is to see the things that we're desensitized to as the writer. It makes me sad for you that it's something you've experienced with freelancers, but YAY for a friend that is really digging in and helping you out. All the best!
