I created a solution, that enables me to stream anything i want from my PC to the 16x16 Matrix. On my PC is run a Program i wrote in Processing (creative coding library), that sends UDP packages via Wifi to an ESP8266, that parses the UDP packages and updates the color of the LEDs accordingly. I send one line (16 Pixels) per 4ms, so i get a framerate of roughly 15fps If i go for a lower delay between lines, it results in screen tearing. Though i suspect that by using a better Microcontroller like a new generation ESP32, i could get a much higher framerate. In the processing program i can do things like rasterizing an Image or Webcam Video, generating visuals through creative code, writing Text, and also many interactions like processing an Audio Signal and making the LED Matrix Audioreactive... Theoretically you could use any other program, like Touchdesigner or Unity, that allows you to send UDP Packages. I was very surprised to see how much is possible (15 FPS is not bad for wifi stream!), even though i used materials that cost less than 10$ for that project.

I hope they put beam forming into it. If it can't separate out real background noise, like TV, stereo, random chatter, as Google home, it's not going to be able to replace the minis. Thing is, I think they'd have to have 4 mics on that chip for it to perform that function. Hopefully PE is just to get it out there and the vNext will be more capable. I still have 2 on the way, maybe it will surprise me.

They started selling fixed panels like this on Aliexpress now. Only 4x4 panels, but probably cam be hacked to expand it.

If you get a UPS you can plug one power distribution into critical and one into non critical. Then it is easy to power what you want to keep alive in an outage. For me I used a deeper rack and put AV stuff on one side (not critical) and networking stuff on the back with UPS backup power.

For anyone trying this now, i've had all sorts of trouble getting the latest version of WLED working with it. There is a new 2D matrix config on the GUI and no matter what i do it mixes up the order of the panels. I ended up using the old 13.4 sound reactive version which is still available and it works perfectly! :)

I'm in the same boat as you. I have the older Google WiFi generation and it's been a huge blocker since I started my home lab. It's a great mesh system-somewhat limited-but it worked fine for years. Anyway, I am in the process of overwriting the Google WiFi OS with OpenWRT, which should save me the cost of buying a new mesh system while I'm building my rack :)

9 Months later and the RGB Ring light still can't be controlled directly with Zigbee2MQTT. Sad. I solved my light switch issue with a smart relais behind the dumb light switch. SONOFF ZBMINI Extreme Zigbee saved me :)
