Just started a box with a platoon for Chain of Commandd in mind. To do that one actually needs two more sprues but these are easily available from Warlord, firms like the Sprue Shop or on e-bay. Just one bit of kit-bashing. I wasn't prepared to go to the fuss of cutting off a hand to attach the pistol hand for the officer. Used a pistol holding arm from the Wargames Atlantic Panzer Lehr (which overall as figures I don't like as much as these)

It's great to see you back! So far it looks like most armies will work in 3rd edition without issue. You might just need a few extra officer minis and a command vehicle.
@MercenaryMiniaturesАй бұрын
It would be good if I didn't have to make too many changes. I will need a few more officer minis. Would you recommend any particular command vehicle? for early war
@Featherus_Ай бұрын
@@MercenaryMiniatures the rules we’ve seen say that if you don’t have a command vehicle you can upgrade one to a command vehicle. But Warlord has been tight lipped on what exactly that means and what counts. What we know is you need at least 2 tanks or Armoured Cars (or 1 of each) and one has to have the command rule.
@Featherus_Ай бұрын
@@MercenaryMiniatures If you want historical German Command Vehicles for the Invasion of France you'll probably want a SdKfz 263, a SdKfz 265, or a SdKfz 250/3. For France, they didn't really have specific command vehicles so it would be the same tank as the rest of the Platoon only with the tank commander having to command the other tanks with flags.
@MercenaryMiniaturesАй бұрын

Good to see you back, congratulations on extending your family! Some advice for French artillery, early war french get a free artillery / anti tank gun and it doesn't take up the artillery slot, so you might consider getting two. (Although bolt action 3rd edition is changing how you build your armies so this is kind of a moot point, never the less the French built their army around forward deployed artillery so you can't have too much) For armored cars, for Germany the Sd Kfz 222 would probably be the most historically accurate and the Panhard for the French I believe I mentioned before but but for tanks, for the Germans the Panzer I or II would be the most historically accurate and for the French the Renault R35 would be the most historically accurate.

Definitely the best way to learn the rules is to play as you read. It engages the rule process and answers questions on the fly. Just kidnap a passing member of the public to game the other units. When watching the battle reports, do you find the gamers seem to lack the basic tactical awareness?
@Bodkin_Ye_Pointy7 ай бұрын
So for shading, try Agrax Earthshade if you have it to hand. It still darkens but is a brown tint which works nicely. I also have Battlefront shades, Rommel Shade and Monty shade which I got for my Flames of War desert forces. The Battlefront paints were developed in conjunction with Vallejo I believe, so there shouldn't be a huge colour shock.

Curious about the colour scheme you chose. While that green colour was present in the French army in 1940, as I understand it Horizon Blue was the colour for the standard infantry. That yellow ochre colour would have been more applicable to the Sudanese troops. However, I am happy to be educated on the matter.
@MercenaryMiniaturesАй бұрын
No, you are 100% correct. The honest answer is I didn't properly research the uniform colour before painting the first unit. Then I played post scriptum on the PC and realised that I had the colour wrong. But I made the decision to go with it.

One last observation. It was good to see someone who isn't scared to play more than one gaming system. I have found a lot of Bolt Action vloggers feel they have to slag off GW to promote Bolt Action which only shows them to be insecure. I am sure War Lord Games don't approve, especially since a bunch of them cut their teeth on this stuff at GW. In the mean time, I like you am new to Bolt Action but have been collecting and painting minnies since I were a lad. My son and I have at least 15 gaming systems of all sorts and types. Go with what you love I say.
@MercenaryMiniaturesАй бұрын
I really like this message. Brutally, we wouldn't have as vibrant a wargaming hobby without Games Workshop in it. And they do make some of the best miniatures in the world. I have always taken the view that the wargaming world is big enough for everyone.
@Bodkin_Ye_Pointy7 ай бұрын
So, it is a shame you are finding life difficult with the metal miniatures. But here are some observations and tips. Maybe paint the varnish on if your troops continue to chip. I have the metal version of Scorpions, Dragons and Banshee which I painted up in the mid naughties (Ironically with metallic paints). I painted on a matt varnish I got from an arts supply shop and non have chipped or rubbed the paint off. On the other hand I have a tradies tin of British Wellesley figures, (They were never Napoleonic's, they owned the French) all metal that I never varnished. Though it has been a while, the paint is still quite good. When dealing with bent metal parts warm them with water before attempting to straighten. Then put a supporting finger behind the point of the bend and use another to straighten the piece out by pushing the length of the part into the support finger rather than trying it from the tip of the bent item. The same applies to those pesky bent resin parts. But the point is the stress of the movement is supported and born across the whole piece rather than just at the point of the bend. It still does not look like you have a hand grip for holding the miniatures when painting. Work something out because the whole process will be so much more stable. You must be aware of this sort of thing from GW and their products But you don't have to buy them, just look at what other hobbyists are doing on the web. Mid Winter Minnie's, Ninjon, The Painting Phase etc... How are you traveling with finding other early war gamers for Bolt Action. My son and I settled for late war because there seemed more options and it does not appear as though Bolt Action players worry about periods of the war. This puts early war forces at a disadvantage because 1939 weapons are underpowered compared with 1944 weapons. Hope to see you again.
@Bodkin_Ye_Pointy7 ай бұрын
Congratulations on the new born. Lots of fun and terror to be had with them for the rest of your life. I have two boys now in their 30's. They are bigger than me, bruise when they punch and we still engage in common interests. Be involved now and you will be for life.

The I Ain’t Been Shot Mum for company actions and supports then there I ‘O’ Group for Battalion level actions and supports. I know it sounds silly but I have no idea what size battles are played with Bolt Action although I have the rule book for version 1. However I would look at too fat Lardies web site and forums to see if they can be of any help. Also look at Storm of Steel you tube videos just search for storm of steel and see what he has reviewed. @@MercenaryMiniatures My BEF infantry. Are some metal castings in 28mm from Warlord games iSight them for Chain of Command. I bought some 20mm from SHQ (I think) bought for I Ain’t Been Shot Mum but I didn’t buy any vehicles at the time but I can’t get any 20mm such as the 15cwt Bedford or the Morris 8 15cwt truck. I should have bought AB 20mm as they do a good range but more expensive. So I’m going for Late War Brits 15mm for O Group where I can still buy all the kit that I need from Plastic Soldier Company who I think do 20mm vehicles. My eye sight is now poor so I may find I can’t pain anything.

could i recommend Tamiya Surface primer. it comes in a rattle can and is a very durable primer due to it being a Lacquer paint. It can be slightly pricey but i find that one can can do a whole army. I think this will reduce the amount of paint chipping straight to the metal. Its tough as old boots and i think it will solve this problem somewhat. It stinks so you must spray outdoors.
@MercenaryMiniatures11 ай бұрын
Thank you, that is a good suggestion that I will try out. Do you know if it leaves the models looking glossy or clear?
@stinkybins41411 ай бұрын
Just to be clear it is a primer and not a Varnish. My thought process is that the paint might adhere to it better. But it will not chip off the metal so easily as other primers. worth a try at least.@@MercenaryMiniatures

I completely agree with the metal miniatures: difficult to work with and easy to damage. Therefore I tried to completely stick with plastic or resin miniatures for my early war German army. I have made a medium mortar team from the "251 8cm frame" and a Pak 36 from the "hanomag pak sprue". Together with some 60mm bases, a spare set of wheels and some leftover infantry it worked great!!
