The Swedes use concrete railroad ties while the USA is still stuck in the wood ties era, often soaked in oil.

Not only from this video alone, it's become apparent that the men who work on railroads aren't going to have too many tulle tutus in their wardrobes. THESE ARE REAL MEN!

I've seen this in person. It's spectacular. They only do 4 per mile since the rail ribbons are one-fourth mile each.

It really is something else to think that welded rails didn't used to be standard practice.

Noob here. They have to be welded together? I thought it was supposed to be empty spaces between them? Or this is something different from that?

Once at my local airport, I stumbled across them dismantling an escalator. I was thoroughly fascinated by all the gears and chains and other machinery in there and I started shooting pictures. The guys working on it were like, what's this guy's deal and I told them I had never seen this before and my dad would have asked you about a ZILLION questions, but I'll let you work. When they saw I found their working interesting, they were very congenial.
