How much watering should there be? I thought vines like to be stressed to some degree to produce quality flavors?
@gavilanhillsvineyard4 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct... However for young vines up to about 4 years it is more important to build a strong root system. You will start getting quality grapes in the 4th year. When we hit the 4th year of growth we will start pulling back on the watering and monitor the water. It really depends as well on the climate. around here in Aug Sept we get some pretty hot days so we will need ot balance stress and heat. It will be a challenge to keep that balance.

Hey Jeff! I just stumbled on your channel and was in Temecula circa 2000 and fondly remember Calloway and Hart wineries. I have plans to retire soon in Tasmania which is the little southern island state of Australia. It has been proven to have the same climate and distance from the equator as Champagne, so I am looking forward to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Cheers🍾

Thanks for another informative video. When you are propagating the cuttings, during the first couple of months in the dirt, do you water them also?

Best of luck for your 2024 growing season. I planted my first vines in 2017 and 2018. Only 120 total but enough to keep busy here in western North Carolina.
@gavilanhillsvineyard6 ай бұрын
Thanxs Good Luck to you as well. Do you make your own Wine? If so, with 120 vines how much to you get each year? This was our second growing season and I kept the Grape clipped except for a few. We got about 120 lbs this year and made about 5 gallons of Grenache Wine... Still aging...
@loulauer58536 ай бұрын
@@gavilanhillsvineyard I misspoke a little. Of my 120 vines, only about 80 are producing so far. Had some newer plantings and some replacements in the last two years. This past season I got 500 pounds from the 80 vines. I'm growing Traminette, Chardonel, Cab Sav, Sangiovese, and Chambourcin grapes. And yes, I do make my own wine too. Ended up with about 34 gallons total and should get around 165 bottles.
@gavilanhillsvineyard6 ай бұрын
@@loulauer5853 Excellent, 500 lbs is great. This will be our 3rd year of growing and I hope to get around 2000 lbs from our 200 mature vines. I will limit the amount of clusters on the vines this year to allow the vines to mature another year. Thanxs

I have a 30 pound female Sulcata that was walking down the middle of my street. I looked for her owners for weeks and no one came forward so I adopted her. Winter was coming so I bought her a plastic dog house that would fit her and added a dog house heater with a thermostat and rubber flaps to keep the heat in and cold wind out. Filled it with hay on the floor and since it got cold (65 degrees) outdoors she put herself to bed and doesn’t come out to eat or drink. I keep the inside between 75-80 degrees. I’ve read that they don’t hibernate, but she’s basically sleeping like a bear in a warm cave. Should I wake her up, pull her out and try to feed and water her or let her sleep?
@gavilanhillsvineyard6 ай бұрын
1 - I would lower the temp in her house it might be too warm. 2 - Yes they do not hibernate, however they can sleep for weeks / they slow down and sort of hibernates. 3 - Mine sometimes do disappears for a long time and I do pull them out on warm days to get them heated up and moving. 4 - If you do pull her out, she may not eat. Put her in the sun and let her warm up. They are very hardy and can sleep for weeks, not to worry... Good Luck

at 8' , this kind of reverse pulling trick can't work at all. The sum of the forces gives the same result as no ' ^ shape' ( so a full bad 90° pulling force ) . You need either a pulling string beyond or pushing part toward the line. But thanks for the video :) it's interesting anyway !
