Burnley played a huge part of the economy in those days - wasn't pleasant, but who asked? People moved there for work; it was grim, but they stuck at it. Born, lived there til I was 20, moved away - but still proud of my Burnley accent & heritage!!

Wow, brings back memories, I was 18/19 in 88, I think it go pedestrianised in 90, looks better than it does now, I moved to whalley years ago, went down Burnley the other week with my teenage son...a bit shocking really, I'm afraid to say.

This looks to be a bit earlier than 1988. Started driving in 87 and I’m sure St James St was part-pedestrianised by then, but my memory isn’t what it was in those days 😂 Love seeing the old place though. I’d totally forgotten about Animal Magic! 😂

Are you sure this was 1988. A few things seem wrong. The top end of St. James’s street was pedestrianised in 88 and there are no sign of the works being carried out. Also that was the year that the Boot became Yates Wine lodge. Also the scaffolding on the mechanics was not their in 88 as it was completed in 87 a year after it was opened by the queen. Look at the amounts of litter you don’t see that amount today.

Great video! I’ve just come back from Burnley after meeting family for the first time up there. My Grandparents grew up in Burnley and I’ve heard many stories over the years and it’s been nice to put a mental image to some of these places that I’ve always been told about. My Grandparents loved their time in Burnley and have always been proud of their hometown and home county of Lancashire. I’ve now realised from this video that the Recreation Centre is now the town centre car park next to the bus station. I thought it was the current Tesco site so thanks for clearing that up for me!

My family originate from Burnley. My Grandparents moved to Nottinghamshire in the 1970s with the coal industry. My late Grandma grew up on Tentre Street in the Burnley Wood area. I don’t know if this is in any of these photos but I haven’t been able to find photos of it online so far so I’m assuming it was demolished. My Grandad grew up on Calder Vale Road then moved onto Talbot Street. I’d love to be able to find photos of Tentre Street and Calder Vale Road if anyone can point me in the right direction. Thanks!
