Definitely encourage a mechanic’s lien when clients don’t pay. I had a party business, we organized and decorated all kinds of events, booked a party, got half in advance as customary, sent bill for remainder afterwards which was for $800.00, with no response despite repeated phone calls and bills sent. So, I paid the $90.00 to file the lien. Quite a bit of time went by until one day we got a ‘phone call from the husband, very upset. He didn’t know his wife had never paid their bill, now they were getting a divorce and they needed to sell their home. That’s when he discovered the mechanic’s lien. He was completely apologetic and reassured me that it would be taken care of, he had to repay me the filing fee plus interest on the unpaid balance. It was worth the wait. Of course, it can take awhile to get restitution, but some people find out they have a lien on them thru credit checks and applying for a loan, which they have to satisfy before they can go forward. It affects their credit to have a lien on their property. Good luck, hope you get resolution.

Fun Fact: A lien can be removed very easily by a lawyer that knows what they're doing and you also risk losing your business license if the lien wasn't done properly it was only done out of pettiness. Unless I'm owed $1,000 or more you can keep your pennies most lawyers around my area won't even consider a lien unless it's more than $1K owned.
