Honestly when I first watched the Dawn of War retrospective and saw the halo 4 joke, I cackled like a mad man cuz I'm a huge halo fan. While I Love halo 4 the most out of the 343 games the ancient evil awakens thing was pretty silly, especially with how it was handled. So all in all, 10/10 joke.

1:04:56 This colour scheme looks a bit like the one on the chaos unit icons in the GOTY edition Also interesting detail: they replaced that purple-green alpha legion with a more normal version for almost all icons in Winter Assault, except for the default CSM squad

I had always thought that each faction had their arbitrary reasons for "praying" to the weird ground computers, especially humans and orks. Machine spirit stuff is self-explanatory and Orks lore-wise tend to do a lot of weird magic through the power of belief anyways so if they think putting their colors on this thing will help them, idk it probably is. Eldar commonly worship Khaine before battle and some a couple of craftworlds seem to dedicate all victories to him, no matter how small. Chaos basically *must* dedicate all to their patron to get next to anything done ever. Tau feel that every territory their sept conquer is done for greater Tau and expansionism is an enormous part of their culture and seeps into everything so stopping to respect their colours is very easily something they'd do. Necrons capture points through their workers drones basically which is pretty in line with them wanting to take over and area, kill everything, and sleep while the scarabs care for their conquests in silence (at least in the old lor I think). Dark Eldar are sort of the only ones I can't honestly figure out. If anyone who has better insight could chime in that'd be great, I'm admittedly an on and off fan of the material. Edit: As for requisition, I always thought it a stand in for just general logistics. The more land you have and the less choked your supply routes are, the more resources you're going to have.

While I agree that overall the game does not need a remaster, it could do with some fixes. 1) - the camera, by default the camera is ridiculously zoomed in, I forget about this every time I do a fresh install and have to find the camera mod so I can actually see what is going on. 2) - The pathfinding is completely useless for large infantry armies such as guard. Any small ravine or junction they just get stuck on, I've found it's much better to keep them in chimeras and disembark, makes the gameplay much quicker and keeps them safe from things like heavy bolters as long as possible. 3) - We could do with proper widescreen rather than the stretched ui solution of the expansions. Some other random points. 1) In the second mission (the one with the scouts) you'll encounter two sets of guardsmen, it is possible to save both, for the first, reinforce the scouts and destroy all the orks before you get the guardsmen, you should then be able to defeat the slugga boys attacking them, however iirc they don't become controllable, for the second set, they are with the killa kan (which if we're doing umm actuallys is a deff dread, or at the time, space ork dreadnought since it has two arms and in 04, killa kans had one), as long as your marines have missile launchers, you should be able to destroy it quick enough to save the guardsmen, who then become controllable. 2) In the mission with the two guardsmen who held out for a week, if you place enough units at the point where the eldar spawn, you can save them, they become controllable as soon as the ambush happens, so it you're quick enough you can move them out of harms way. 3) The campaign schemes are unique and you can use them in skirmish/muliplayer, in the lobby select the army painter and create a new scheme -call this one of: \chaos] \eldar] \ork] \marine], it won't save the scheme, but you can use it. Finally, if you like Eldar with helmets, you should look into the Altansar Craftworld, they were a craftworld that was trapped in the eye of terror and eventually rescued, after which they refuse to remove their helmets and are completely distrusted by other Eldar.

Regarding the whole starcraft/DoW influence - I mean, wasn't starcraft originally a 40k product? As I understand it it was started up initially as a 40k game, but whatever agreement fell through and Blizzard decided they had already sunk enough money into the project that it was worth continuing and just changing the lore/aesthetics to fit. There's certainly *a lot* of similarities between the starcraft and 40k universes. I think designing an RTS campaign is more difficult than people give it credit for. Unlike an FPS or an RPG or whatever, there's a great deal more mechanics and interactions to learn. You have to learn what every unit is, what every unit does, and how every unit interacts with every other unit. You also have to learn how the economy system works, what resources are needed where and what the balance points are, how production works (and differs between the races) and how much resource harvesting is needed to balance any one production building. You have to learn scouting, abilities, upgrades, tech-progression (Admittedly fairly simple for most DoW races), etc. There's a lot of knowledge to cram in, and it's difficult to give good story reasoning for learning it all. End of the day, in the vast majority of good stories, you as the commander ought to already know these things right? How many valiant last stands or courageous assaults were led by a day 1 recruit who hasn't actually received any formal training whatsoever? It's very hard to write a story that is immersive and entertaining, that also accommodates for the player knowing nothing about the game, because the player themselves is part of the story. On an unrelated note, regarding the whole "Do I review a game in the context of it's release, or in the context of the current time?" I think the answer is both. There's nothing wrong with looking back at a game and analyzing how it differed from it's competitors and near-peers (both pre and post release), while also then taking a step back and talking about how it stands up today. When I first stepped into game design, something I was taught about was the deliberate artistic direction of world of warcraft. For 2001, the release date, WoW's graphics were pretty good. I mean the top 10 games of 2001 were Halo:CE and MGS2 (SoL) and Silent Hill 2 etc. The polycounts in these games weren't much better and the texture quality was arguably worse. But what WoW did differently was it made a deliberate and conscious choice to go for a somewhat cartoonish, hand-painted textures, 'low-poly' style. As a result, it still actually looks ok today, where games like combat evolved look decidedly dated. Because today we can appreciate it as just a cartoonish representation, whereas a game like CE was always trying to be what we call "Photo-realistic" which inevitably places a hard timer on how long it will actually look 'good' and when it will start to look old. I'm not saying DoW pulled a WoW here with it's artistic choices, just using that as an example of how a game can be appreciated in both the context of it's release, as well as today, and needn't be reviewed solely from one or the other.

About the voice acting : i'm french, i played it in french. While maybe not as good as the english voice acting in general, the french voices were amazing and some voices are better than the english counterpart. The daemon of the Maledictum at the end notably was scary for me as a kid. (edit : i found a youtube playthrought in french if you want to hear it kzbin.info/www/bejne/hWercqFvnriVj80si=tKmJMCjafh_8aDQf&t=29910 )
