For me it's not "There will be another time" that does it in. It's that final thank you letter from Bungie during the credits and I wish it was kept in the Master Chief Collection. Three words: See you starside.

So This is the first of a few videos I'd like to make, talking about some mixed topics from varying games that aren't necessarily Retrospectives. That being said, this one does reflect a lot on an older game and what it was like to play it for the first time and revisit it. I hope you enjoy it! I would've liked to have refined this a bit further in the editing/script department but I'm very happy with it overall. Honestly I love the Halo Games a lot, and this video isn't gonna go into that much overall about Reach, so maybe I could make a full Retrospective series on these games too? And as I've said at the end of the video, please keep an eye out on KZbin Community or my Twitter for any news on a future game night for Reach or the other Halos too. I know neither platform is used much though, so if you have any recommendations for other ways I can keep you notified of this stuff, I'd love to hear it! twitter.com/ThunderPsyker Check out my Second Channel if you're interested! kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5eVhJp5lpqXsLc And If you'd like to throw some money towards the channel, please consider donating via the KZbin Thanks feature, or via my Kofi: ko-fi.com/thunderpsyker

I was never really a big multiplayer guy for reach, I much prefered halo 3 multi and still do to this day, but I cannont deny reach's campign or community quality. And as far down the hole as we are, things are maybe starting to look up for halo again. The management change at 343 is a chance for things to get better and so far they have been doing okay, hell infinite is starting to gain players again. Yes it has the normal greedy porblems free to play games have and yes it doesnt have enough community features, but it now has enough content for its really solid core gameplay to start to shine and the forge is BY FAR the best it has ever been, I have seen maps that have made my jaw drop in a way it not has in a long time. But the biggest thing is I just... had fun with halo again. A friend convined me to reinstall the game and give it another shot, and while I had very low expectations, I legit found myself having honest, relaxed fun in a way I hadnt with halo in years, and that desire to uninstall the game I expected to be there was nowhere to be found.

Halo Reach is the feeling of ennui turned into a story. It doesn't hurt, it just makes you feel empty, because you know it's over, and it'll never be the same again. Reach adds context to the rest of the Halo series that gives it the foundation of *reality* that so much other sci-fi lacks, reading Ghosts of Onyx and Blue Team sitting in the back of a Pelican as they speed over Carribean waves, there's still that sense of scale and time progression, because we *were* Noble Six when they died in the duststorm as Aszod was glassed, running a rifle dry into opponents that would never end.

I'm not smart enough to get if there's a hidden meaning there, but we do get ONE personality trait out of Noble 6... At the start of the game, after you've rescued the marines and before embarking to the radio tower, 6 picks up a DMR. For the rest of the game, it will be his primary weapon, even after atmospheric re-entry he picks one up by the time the next mission ends... Yet, at the very end, he takes out his helmet... Reaches for an assault rifle, and puts up a valiant last stand with it in his hands, the weapon he enlisted to Noble team with...

For me, Reach was the last official Halo game. It was the originals at Bungie giving it their all before trying something else. Something that would last, something that will be remembered. Nothing will every compare to Reach.
@reecedignan8365 Жыл бұрын
I think the thing that also helps make Reach sit well amongst Halo fans - especially those who grew up with the series - is that Bungie didn’t just make Reach as a farewell to Microsoft, it made it as a farewell to the fans who helped make Halo what it was. You can note it quite well in the Campaign with how Noble 6 is done. They aren’t given a deep character or background, they’re left extremely blank, but not completely blank either, cause very small change a player down to their armour came along with them into the campaign. You took a CQB helmet, next time you booted the reach campaign, 6 had a CQB helmet. You made yourself pink with a fiery helmet that had a spooky skeleton inside, so was Noble 6. And what did that do, it brought you into the universe and campaign as six. It brought your closer to Noble surprisingly cause you were apart of the team, not just tagging along. And better, you were the Spartan that have Hope to Humanity, from handing off Cortana, to giving the Autumn a chance to escape and for humanity setting chief on his story to stop the covenant and destroy Halo. And that’s why Reach usually hits player who play through the game release order differently than it hits those who play it chronologically. Cause while they get the ending of chief and 3, we got the ending of being the character who set the universe we loved into motion. And when you saw Bungie final goodbye message, it just hits you so hard, cause it wasn’t just a goodbye to fans, it was a goodbye to a community they forged, but also a goodbye to a community that also inspired them to go above and beyond for it. A community that was just as much a major part of Bungie as it’s employees. And it was in its way a goodbye to its friends, cause like you said when talking about that old friends list, many of those who helped forge Halo didn’t survive that jump to Destiny, many of those who helped make Halo itself didn’t survive Microsoft to see what it’s legacy would become and even Bungie itself somewhat didn’t survive as a company when it left and forged Destiny. Like you said, it’s like looking back at that old friends list and seeing the same list of names, but none of them there. But, like you also said, it’s also the memories we share playing that game, from Big Team Battle, to Infection (and even ranking in the top list of 100 player of infection for even a couple hours) and Invasion and the back and forth battles on the spire; but also to custom games; Speed Halo, Duck Hunt, Garbage Day, Rainbow Road, Kill Ball Run, battleships, dodgeball… so many memories; and on the rare but fun occasion, playing alongside a Bungie employee and actually being able to chat and banter with them, to even invite them to custom games and nights. Halo as a story is about humanity’s struggle, strength and will to SURVIVE against a enemy that had no compassion or mercy for them and sought only their destruction. Halo as a Game was created so that a bunch of friends could come together on LAN and play a competitive but fun shooter together. Halo as a series was created so that that group of friend could extend that enjoyment they had together out to a wider group of people, a fanbase and later a community of friends which they could write and create for. That’s Halos legacy and why it sits so strong in so many peoples hearts to this day. And it’s why 343 struggles to make much sway with the community, cause unlike Bungie, they forgot what Halo was about, it wasn’t about being the best shooter or story out there, it was about creating a game that a community could come together around and enjoy; From split screen play, to multiplayer campaign and LASO, to persistent lobbies and game votes, to progression that kind of meant something and to custom games where legends forged, friendships bonded, content creators filmed and memories… memories were created. Sadly 343 never seemed to learn that, maybe it’s to much cooperate oversight, maybe it’s too little connection between employee and player, maybe it’s cause it’s not “there” child of a series, or maybe it’s cause they don’t care to maintain that community anymore. All we can do, is enjoy the memories. And think that one day, 343 or whoever takes over halo next will remember that while Halo is a game, it’s heart was forged around a community that helped inspire it.

For me those games are CSS, COD4, BF3 and then the DayZ mod. Well over a decade later, i still think of those games and the memories fondly. I fully expected 343 bashing all the way through considering the trend of all Halotubers solely rely on negativity to get those views. Even though I'm a disgusting fan of Halo Infinite, even after the mediocracity of the launch. I appreciate your level of tameness as always. I might've not grown up with Reach, which is why I feel indifferent, but it's a good to see an honest review from someone who cherishes Reach. Feel free to do a retrospective on the other games, (yes, including 343 series) I fully expect you to be honest and still have a level-headed approach moreso than other have tried in the past, I don't expect you to like the new series because to many they are a drastic change to from the Bungie games, but when you look at it closer shows they followed precisely followed some of the things Bungie changed in Reach. Anyway, this video deserves far more appraisal than most others.

Thank you so much for writing this. It's interesting how much art can change through time, cerebral even. The “There’ll be another time” chapter name at the beginning of Lone Wolf is such a gut punch for two reason. 1) Another time, that none of Noble Team live to see. 2) Another time that we, the player, have already had. The glory days and peak of Halo is already behind us with some of our childhoods along with it, never to be seen again.

This hits hard. I've got so many good memories from Reach, from the countless repeats of the campaign to the addictive community via multiplayer to the goofy clans that might as well have been RPers at the time. I still tell stories of those times to this day. And you can bet when MCC came to pc starting with Reach I jumped head first into it. I was in the same boat of having a list of newer online pals that'd never touched Reach or even a Halo title. I probably bought the game for 8 different people, just so I could see them experience the campaign or for them all to experience a Warthog flying at them at mac 10 during Speed Halo or Jump Rope. Nothing has ever filled that hole Reach and the stories we made left.

The grime and immersive universe, the emotions it got out of me from laughter, excitement sadness, etc, the huge variety of ways to play alone or with friends, the community, the ways you could get creative, the ways you could express yourself, and all the memories and friends that I've made just from one product. Even games I've enjoyed today usually just feel temporary and I'll eventually move on to something else in a month or 2. But Reach has stuck with me for the last decade. 1-3 might be considered more the peak of the franchise, but Reach will always be my favorite and the culmination of everything Bungie built.

I have a very sad memory with Reach. I was so hyped for its release and I preordered it with a group of friends, I was 15 at the time and had grown up with Halo obsessively. Come release day me and my mates pick up our copies and we go home, soon into the evening we start CO-OP and into the second mission me and my dad got into an argument and he snapped my Reach disk infront of me (which broke my heart). I ask my friends to wait on the CO-OP and do Multi and we will continue tomorrow. Next day I log on and my mates are all snickering. It dawns on me that they finished the campaign on legendary and didnt wait. This annoyed me and I log off. The weeks role on and we casually play on and off and no one wants to redo campaign. Eventually I finish it all by myself. During my absence, one of my friends brings his friends from another school into the crew. These 2 guys are kind of douches and were the trash talk instigators and I didnt gel with this behaviour. One night my mum yells out I love you bubby and this tees me up for an evening roast but these other 2 guys dont stop and it is almost an instant abuse fest and targetting of me every night online. My 2 friends stay silent or ignore but dont stick up for me where as my mate who invited them joins in and the tirade ensues im mocked more and log off. I shelf Reach and due to other personal issues and the breakdown of friendships I literally missed out on the experience that was 2010 and bungies last Halo. I eventually returned to reach due to the MCC collab and I found a new love and revive for a game that honestly I wish I had the chance to live the glory days in. This video honestly touched me and reminded me of a pretty shitty time (there was more issues in my life outside of reach but I just wanted to highlight the significance of the story based upon bonds and the bitter sweetness that was bungies last Halo) Great work and i loved how you structured the video and it is overall great content.

One thing with the MCC inclusion of Reach however, that I cannot understand for the life of me, is that 343 has somehow fucked the space section of Long Night of Solace entirely. It is way more difficult than it should be. Oh, and the elevators. That gets me more than it really should do. These have never been fixed, outside of mods. Christ, 343. I love Reach still. I prefer 3 for MP personally, but Reach will always have a special place for me. It really is a damn shame that Halo shows little sign that it'll be anything close to how great 3 and Reach was and still is. Halo truly deserved better than what it got. But at the very least, we'll have the memories. *We remember.*

So that bit wasn't written in the script or anything, that was my live reaction to realizing I had said that. I think the Forerunner bit was intentional so it's why I didn't draw attention to it? But to be honest that segment was written at 2am or something so I don't remember my intentions there

I love the fact that the ring as seen during Reach's end credits is the same exact ring model from Halo CE.

Man this video hits me where I live, I've had so many fond memories of Reach when it first came out and I was so happy that it was revived on the PC. There were many reasons why I chose this game to be the first Let's Play series on my own channel; a big reason being that it was the first game I ever had on my own Xbox 360 (I got the Reach Xbox in Christmas of 2010) and my friends and I would spend hours doing firefight and wacky custom games. And I'm glad that most of those IRL friends I played Reach with all those years ago get to play it with me and some new ones I've made through my own gaming channel. Reach has also been good to me, and I'm glad everyone's returning the favor by celebrating it with emotional and wholesome videos like this. PS: also I was wondering why you sounded familiar and I remembered you were the main Custodes character in TTS, it's cool that you're still doing content here on KZbin, keep up the good work man 🙏

As a Halo Campaign Enjoyer, one of the most unsung (but highly appreciated by ME) community features of Reach was Campaign matchmaking. I've been with Halo since the beginning, but being able to just jump in with a full team (without having to wait for friends to get on or search in online groups) made Halo Reach my most re-played campaign of them all. Still wishing they'd add the feature to MCC (or add campaigns to custom game browser).

16:40 . Felt this. I met my friends here, on reach, just pissing about. Now, ten years later, I cant remember the last time I spoke to any of them. They all moved on, or went into groups I later fell out of. Now, the only group I play with hardly talk, and I can go months without playing with them

It's surprisingly painful, to look at a friends list and see "Last online: 7 years ago."

As a sweaty book fan of Halo I was a little disappointed back in the day, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to really appreciate Reach’s Story 👏 loved that game, we’ll never see another Halo like it.

I've been hit with a very similar kind of nostalgia as of late. To me it feels like many multiplayer games have become... less personal as time went on. And funnily enough I think it's pretty much exactly *because* things were inconvenient back then. Finagling your way through the in-game chat, searching for lobbies you'd spend hours in playing with a select group of people, sharing knowledge and tricks, the list goes on. I feel like I barely do it anymore. Join, play, leave. A lobby feels less like a get-together and more like sitting on a train. Strangers come and go before they get a chance to really make an impression. It's of course very convenient, picking up a game and starting to play is fast and easy, but I do find myself wishing I could go back for a bit. To begin an evening by beating a small group of random people, and going to bed thinking about them and their antics. Just one last time.

Beautifully made video, man. Some of your best work right here. Reach contains so many vivid memories for me and my older brother, and we ironically played through it for the first time together in the September of 2015. So this video comes with some added nostalgia.

20:43 This hits hard, but it's true, Reach and War for Cybertron hold a place in my heart and memories that I'll always remember. They're where I made my first XBL friends, where I really got to play multiplayer games, had fun and made memories. I will remember Reach, just as I'm sure everyone else here will...

My first experience playing video games besides Kung Fu Panda on the xbox 360 was picking up Halo 4 in 2017, so I missed all of the multiplayer shenanigans of the 2000s, and even the 2010s. But playing Halo multiplayer and chilling in the voice chat on that game night you hosted was some of the most fun I've ever experienced with videogames. You've made me nostalgic for an era of which I was never a part-a time not really experienced. I like to think that that game night was that joy during the best of those days. Especially poignant in this video is your drawing attention to "There'll be another time." There's a game I adore, called Outer Wilds, in which time is a major component, and it really captures the idea of that time never coming around-either through cruel circumstance, the long drift away of relationships or plain, cruel passing of time. There are people I have had such fun with in video games for a single night or even a few, who I've laughed with and pranked and then, afterwards, we never meet again. It's...very well captured in the Xbox lobby bar segment. I also love your focus on the atmosphere of Reach as a social game, while also acknowledging its story flaws-for me, Halo is best experienced with another by your side to join in the battle. Facing the end together and all that, Reach being Reach... (On a side note, the bleakness of Reach...really is done well. This sort of situation was the Norm, not the exception, in the war...outgunned, outnumbered, and bulldozed battle by battle, war by war...setback after setback, loss after loss. There's a beautiful poetry to the Spartans, their being seen as weapons, but still, showing that humanity through their small actions-their futures stolen from them, and forced into war for all of their lives... But that's enough of me rambling. Your video is, as your other essays have been, excellent and wonderful. And hey, hopefully, next time you announce a custom night, I'll be up for a second round. P.S. Holy Shit how the Hell was I not already subscribed? This crime must be amended now! With incandescent vigour and copius quantities of sulfuric omlette! Regards-CrimsonQuill086

This video reminded me of why i love halo and, specially minecraft, so much. Growing as an ADHD and Autistic child in a country where most of the pople don't have that sorta acess to mental health (at the time, wich i believe was around 2010's), i always struggled with stuff such as social interactions, relationships, etc; And, more often than not, i'd have easier times on the videogame world than the real world. That's when i started using youtube, and by extension, found out about minecraft and halo, and for christmas i got an XBOX 360. Sadly, it was ¨unlocked¨ (sorry, i don't know how it is called when an console is able to read pirate games) so that meant no xbox live, even then i still tried to play. I remember hoping to find halo discs, only to never find it in the local pirate game store i used to go to, but i fondly remember watching halo videos and machinimas (even tough i didn't understand english at the time) and re-watching the halo 3 trailer multiple times For me both halo and minecraft are so special because they were my true ¨friends¨ in times i didn't have ones, they were there for me when nobody called me to parties or to hang out, and i genuinely had fun just playing those games all night long. Seeing MCC on the steam store was a dream come true, and for the first time, i was able to experience halo as it was truly meant to be experienced. I have been following your channel for around two or three years, but i think this is one of my favorite videos, hands down. Sorry for bad english, not my native language.
