I remember as a kid my grandpa once told me never buy limited edition stuff. I asked why not and he said because everyone buys those. He explained even if there are only 1000 items if 800 people own them it's not that rare be cause 80 percent of those collectors have them. He also said common items are passed up in favor of those and the commons become more rare and valuable because less people have them or know if them. I remember not long after we went to a hot wheels show. The tables where full of collectors limited edition cars. My grandpa brought ordinary cars he owned and his table got a lot of attention. Sure enough there was lots of comments like "when was that out? Never saw that one before.", "wow never saw those ones before!". He also told me he noticed some cars he bought where only 1 at every several stores. Though not marked they where rarer then the limited edition cars. He said those same stores had many collector cars each
