So the attack and release knobs didn't do anything in your demo, they only work when the time constant is in the variable positions.

Sorry but this compressor is not good. Has some good features like the Input/Output/Mix/AGC but compare this to Acustica's Smoke, and you will hear how underwhelming this thing sounds.

Incredible test! Well done.... I own all of these except the SSL. I've been thinking about picking it up but I had heard it's very clean (and I think that shows here). Drums - BX killed it on the drums, followed by Waves. UAD must need more tweaking because it was the weakest on drums by far. Guitars - Preferred SSL on guitars, followed by BX! SSL had such a wide stereo image. UAD and waves sounded similar, slightly more narrow stereo field and had that honky tone in the mids. This leads me to believe that they may actually be the more accurate emulations (never used a real SSL console), but I just liked the sound of the other 2 better. Keys - okay now it is obvious that the BX just has more low end extension than the others and that's where my preference is coming from. But wow, in this one the top end sounds more open as well. Not as much sustain in the compressor as the others though. Waves felt like it would sit in the mix best, UAD was the most forward (thanks to that honky, congested sound in the mids again) SSL was the darkest and widest. I think when using on multiple sources the BX was the safest bet, especially if you couple it with a stereo imager for sources that need to be a bit wider (like the S1 imager or PA's new SPL BIG). SSL 2nd with Waves as a close 3rd. As a UAD Ultimate owner and fan of many of their plugins, I am sad to say that I thought it came in last place on just about every source. With that said, that company is going downhill anyway and has really questionable business practices so it would be nice to abandon them anyway with all these incredible new options!

I can hear subtle differences. But what Jcpunga says you probably won't notice anything different on a full mix.

Doesn't sound like tape that's the problem. Waste of money then.
@jcpuga26 күн бұрын
On the Drums I hear the sustain on the Hi-Mids extend just a bit more. And BX transients hit a bit more. But it may just be me imaging things 😂😂😂 TBH they are so similar that on a full mix you probably wouldn’t even notice 🔊

Well, I have many more strange sounds up my sleeve (: Edit: I can't change the tanscription afterwards, but I renamed the chapter in the video description to "guitar".

Huh. Nice video, but everything in it sounds less-than-great, including the plug-in.
@ColorfulTonesStudioАй бұрын
Hello and thank you for your comment! I appreciate it very much. It seems like I didn't choose good examples for this video.🤔That's good to know, I'll pay even more attention to that in the future.
@FreakinOutOnAudioАй бұрын
To be fair, the hardware is one of my favorites, so maybe my expectations for the plug-in are just too high.
@marmotmanАй бұрын
Not sure that using it on NI's Strummed Acoustic (or any sampled instruments poorly performed/programmed for that matter) is representative of it in a real world application. The audio content of the video should, ideally, match the production quality of the video.
@ColorfulTonesStudioАй бұрын
Well, thanks for the compliment on the production quality of the video. :) True, the guitar was probably the least representative. Considering how many productions nowadays contain sampled instruments and that the video is not about the expensive hardware but a plugin emulation of it that is accessible to everyone, I still don't find it inappropriate. In the end, I probably should have used the plugin on the MixBus as well. Unfortunately, some ideas only come when it's too late to change anything (:

Thanks for sharing! What do you think it adds to the usual compressor lineup you might already have?
@ColorfulTonesStudioАй бұрын
You're welcome! I particularly appreciate the SUCCESSOR for it's subtle analog sound character and pleasant compression. I consider the character of the plugin to be more unobtrusive than that of many other compressors, which is why I will be using the plug-in primarily on the mix bus for the time being.
@sangha1486Ай бұрын
So it's transparent and it has analog character?
@ColorfulTonesStudioАй бұрын
The two are not necessarily mutually exclusive. In my opinion, the SUCCESSOR has an unobtrusive sound character that is more or less prominent depending on the settings. I think this is very appropriate for a compressor originally intended for the mix bus. It's more about creating a certain glue factor than coloring the sound.

If this is adding sub bass would you want to tune the sub bass to the key of the song?
@ColorfulTonesStudioАй бұрын
I rarely use this plugin, but your question seems to be a reasonable assumption. It's definitely a good way if the sub doesn't harmonize with the song. I could imagine inserting the plugin into an AUX channel, tuning it there and mixing it in. I really like this idea!

Is there a filter for sidechain?
@ColorfulTonesStudio2 ай бұрын
Hey there! They added it recently: "The Unfairchild plugin is now available at a new lower intro price of $99. Plus, it's packed with new features like side-chain HPF, makeup gain, improved load time & CPU, and improved oversampling." -Mixland I made the video for the previous version, but the new version should include the feature.
