Honestly, the Tatra Type 87 seems like it more inspired the Tucker Torpedo, either that or it's just a really odd coincidence that both of their designs & concept are strikingly similar. The VW Beetle was more designed to be cheap, basic transportation for everyone, while the Tartra was designed more on the luxurious and technologically advanced side of the spectrum. So to me, comparing the Volkswagen to the Tatra is like comparing apples and oranges, although it is apparent Ferdinand Porsche did take inspiration from that car.

I thought the camera fault was a filter. It gave the film a very 8mm home movie look, which matches the vintage of the car.

Good old cars , I had quite a few various models ..... I picked up an mint 8k Metro Gsi a few years back that was absolutely mint .. no rust anywhere , had been garaged from new etc ... I sold it to a young girl who trashed it over the space of a year or so .... wished I'd kept it tucked away now as they appear to be going up in price especially in original condition.... but you live and learn

I dont care how ergonomic or practical that car is. I would rather, slowly castrate myself with a dull rusty spoon, than be seen in it.

love em used to have em..coughing and spitting like a spitfire starting up,live tappets on mine scary excuse for brakes lol,all them overdrives .....and they loved to rev..I remember on one of mine the throttle pedal was always falling forward, forever putting it back, done a couple of alpines into holbay spec,I still remember doing everything swapped the lot over but it just didn't look right I eventually worked out the holbay car was built 2 inches ? lower to the ground and the glovebox had a tiny little h120 badge red?also the boot lid had a bit of a tail,it made good noises.... and the set up In the drivers position was great with the big wheel and the pillarless bit came into its own in the summer ...,just different to everything else, something else I just remembered the driver's door drops I fad lift and shut.lol..love to have another one now,but too dear for me..I used to pick them up for 50-100..😙

+3500P5 I get your point but, as I said, even back in the '70s & '80s, I don't think that these were particularly admired cars, unlike your username-sake's P5, for example. I don't think that they ever appealed to the car enthusiast. My 'dream' ordinary car of this era is a Hillman (Hunter) GT. IMO, it was a worthy My dada had one and it seemed a worthy Cortina GT alternative. Even back then, i can never remember anyone wanting a Maxi. PS I like the X300 XJR too.

Now that brings back memories. Kent to Somerset (pre M25) 5 hour trip for our "summer holiday". Me as one of 4 kids on the back seat, legs sticking to the seats by arrival. My dads Maxi with miss-matched panels piled high, roof rack and all, and towing an over-loaded trailer as well. Crazy times, but happy memories.

It's damn unforgivable that the Tatra ended up on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain. Had that not happened, we'd probably be driving Tatras, rather than Volkswagens. Either that, or the Tatra would be available for those who like Mercedes-Benz and/or BMW but want something with the rear mounted engine. :)

Development was cancelled after Chrysler bought Rootes in 1968. They favoured the Cummins Vale instead.
