problem is .if you can afford a 600mm f4 you can afford to own both prime and zoom ,where as most tele zoom lens owners can not afford 600mm f4 primes ,and those in the camp of not owning big primes no the limitations ,your owl scenario is not the best choice as most would try to lower the shutter speed to lower the iso and maybe use some kind of stabilzation ,when stuff is moving its pretty much game over for the zoom unless you enjoy a different kind of creativity motion blur .

Here's another ugly truth, Nikon sells a 600mm prime lens that is 6.3 and in Canada is over 6000 dollars. If you are truly serious about wildlife then get an F4 lens, you can get some decent deals on f mount glass that was made in Japan and real pro quality.

I believe most of us understand the cropping point, but then the problem is not taking photos and cropping them, but not getting close enough. Now, how do you achieve that? I rather have a cropped photo than nothing, and I would like to get full frame shots, but how do you do it? 🤔

I love to hear a photographer who shoots full manual. I have never used Auto ISO. I refused for exactly that reason. Especially in fast changing situations. When I'm being the lens, I'm a human light meter. Many times after I shoot I have no idea what I got till later because the concentration on the exposure being perfect saves me time and time again. I'm always fixed aperture. And I have a starting ISO depending on the situation. But both shutter speed and ISO can be changed in a fraction of a second if you live in the mode of light. Not the point and shoot and depend on the camera to do anything on it's own. I love these stories and examples. I live on my live histogram in my Z8. And because I already know where I'm at at all times, I can immediately decide whether shutter speed or ISO is the answer. Thanks for the videos. Well done. Because they help prepare us for our dream situation not to be ruined.

I'm a complete amateur, so much so, that most instructional videos I've seen are like a foreign language to me, and I'm a polyglot. That said, I find your videos extremely helpful. I also agree with you regarding cheating. I bought a Sony a7iv and and Sony 200-600mm lens specifically for hummingbirds. Every year our property is filled with hummingbirds. We get four species here and I decided a real camera is a must. I joined some Facebook groups so I can learn more about the cameras they use. I've left most groups because of the horrid advice and manipulation concerning these beautiful jewels! People offer advice on how to hand feed them by removing all food sources. I find that cruel, horrifying and a completely inhumane practice. Okay, rant over! Thanks so much for having integrity!

I find it funny that people often say the 400 f2.8 is just not enough reach for a lot of wildlife, yet somehow the Sony E 300 f2.8G is a "good choice" because of its smaller size and weight. The reality is the E 300 f2.8 is 3.24lbs before you put a lens coat on it or mount it with a TC, and 5" x 10.5" not including the hood. This is not a small or light 300mm prime, and IQ is very average with the 1.4xTC and mediocre at best with the 2.0xTC so "flexibility" is actually pretty limited on that lens. @11:39 Yes, but the lens elements and optical formula matters. If you have a 300 f2.8 with crappy lens elements and/or a poor optical formula it will be outperformed by a 300 f4 with high quality lens elements and/or a good optical formula in all lighting conditions but especially in less than good lighting. One should not assume that simply because a lens has a larger maximum aperture that it will perform better in less than good light vs another lens with a smaller maximum aperture. There have been plenty of f2.8 lenses that could not perform well unless you stopped it down to f4 or f5.6 (or even higher), while others only had a maximum aperture of f4 or f5.6 and performed brilliantly at those apertures with no need to stop down. IMHO, large maximum apertures are more about DOF and blowing out backgrounds than it is about getting the maximum quality of image, especially in less than good light.

Hey, Tin Man I’m a biologist and wildlife photographer in Ontario and am looking to photograph northwestern wolves and other predators in the next 24 months. I noted some Alaska guiding companies mentioned you had used their services, but some of the website was filled with placeholder text and I wanted to confirm you had actually used them and ask about your experience with them. Also - you’re propbably aware, but I’ve seen a number of websites with your name on them that may be people passing themselves off as you. Thought you’d want to know. Thanks for your insights - the 300mm looks really interesting. I shoot Nikon with the 400mm f/2.8TC, the 400mm 4.5, and the 180-600mm f/6.3, so the Sony lens isn’t in my future. But I always love to see competition and innovation 😎 Cheers Tom

The 1500 g weight really is its best selling point. I shoot nikon only and I am thinking to sell my Nikon 300 VRII which weight 6.4 lb and get this and a megadap e to z adaptor to use this lens on my z9. But I am considering the z400 4.5 as well. Tough choice.

For me size and weight matters a lot, because now I do most hiking in the Nature. I have had the analogue Canon FDn 300mm 2.8 L Lens for many years, it weighs 2400g which I think is too much for me now, so when I saw the new Sony 300mm 2.8 GM Lens, I nearly bought it with 1.4x and 2x, but then the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports Lens was announced, I ordered it as soon as possible and I have had it since mid March 2024, it is an excellent Lens ! Very compact and light weight, smaller than the Sony 300mm 2.8, the Sony 300mm is sharper than the Sigma 500mm when the Sony is used without teleconverter, with a 1.4x they are close, with a 2x on the Sony, then the Sigma is better. The Sigma is less than half the price of the Sony, so you get a lot for your money. I can very highly recommend the Sigma 500mm 5.6 DG DN OS Sports.

good reminder of why wildlife photography is so great. sometimes i forget why im out with a camera. but ur lion encounter reminded me of the baby deer that ran toward me in a corn field, crying, a couple weeks ago that I caught with an old manual focus nikkor ai 105mm 2.5. seeing the vulnerability of that young spotted deer meant something to me. made me feel grateful to be alive. so the photos of its approach, the pose when it saw i wasn't its mom, and the run away are 3 pictures that I love and can truly forget image quality.
