This is a blast from the past for me. My first 7 years of my 20year Air Force career was spent at Griffiss AFB, NY (from 1974 to 1983). I miss the sounds of B52s taking off and landing on base My husband was an Air Traffic Controller and i spent time in the control tower - the night sorties were amazing to watch. My favorite was the AF F106s taking off with full afterburners! I miss the military every day and Griffiss AFB holds a special place in my heart. When they decommissioned many AF bases i was truly sorry to see Griffiss get the sack! Ive got some truly interesting stories from Griffiss involving the base's main flying mission. Thank you for triggering my trip down memory lane.

Remember : the elevator turns the airplane, that’s why we are told to get the wings level first, then pull.
@crand20033 Жыл бұрын
JFK Jr's plane had gas tanks in each wing and one was heavier than the other so to maintain control he had to compensate for that condition. Am I right?
@BB85253 Жыл бұрын
No. unless the imbalance was egregious, that wouldn't have anything to do with his crash. He went IFR when he wasn't qualified to do so. That killed him and a ton of others over the years. No Mystery. I flew over long island that night and it was dense haze and no moonlight. He got disoriented and crashed. It's not more complicated than that.

What is the mpg or kpl on your plane?
@pilottory2 жыл бұрын
Hard to measure mpg because that varies depending on the weather. My fuel consumption is generally measured in gph (gallons per hour). My plane is about 10 gph with a 50 gallon tank which could get me anywhere from 675 NM to 875 NM depending on the weather. That's about 15 to 20 mpg, I suppose.
@GryphonSmith-mk6dv2 жыл бұрын
@@pilottory, I always thought planes had a super duper good MPG. Also, two things; What feul does it use? And that is a huge gas tank!

Unusual attitudes? That’s a walk in the park. My CFI tried to break the plane in half!
@MTD3692 жыл бұрын
Man, my CFI was flying some crazy stuff when I did recovery from unusual attitudes. After seeing how gentle this was I think he may have been trying to kill us.
@dickbeale97312 жыл бұрын
In Europe you need an instrument rating to fly at night. I think the same thing should apply here, but of course it doesn’t. A non instrument rated pilot should only be flying in day VFR, IMO.
@keithbeaty32922 жыл бұрын
Would have been nice to see some standard UPRT introduced such as upset recognition, unloading the elevator then continuing the recovery.
@Kadams19972 жыл бұрын
Gentle unusual attitudes. I have had some instructors feel like they're trying to do a barrel roll in a c172.
@Federico02 жыл бұрын
It's the slow coordinated turn that kills you. Your vestibular system gets adapted to the angular shift and you feel like being straight and level while you're not. Unusual attitude recovery is one thing, what he's showing here is illusions which may lead to a graveyard spiral in IIMC. So to all the people complaining about how shallow those turns were... you're not getting the point of this.
@iainmillar1532 Жыл бұрын
Yeah my instructor first instrument lesson gave me the leans real bad. Asked me to keep my eyes closed and level the wings with aileron which I did. Then told me to open my eyes… we were in a huge bank angle. And climbing. That was over 20 years ago but I still remember it clearly.

Foggles: amzn.to/3y21D7t The glasses I'm wearing (, known as "Foggles", prevent me from being able to see out the windows and eliminates any reference I have to the ground or horizon. This simulates what it's like flying through clouds, which obscures your vision and eliminates ground and horizon references. While I'm wearing the goggles, all I can see is the instrument panel gauges in front of me and I'm not able to see out the windows until I take off the glasses a few seconds before landing. The "minimums", or decision altitude, for this particular approach, is 200 FT AGL (above ground level), so when I take off the foggles, I'm only 200 feet above the runway. These are the specific brand of foggles I wear while flying IFR instrument approach practice: amzn.to/3y21D7t

You guys are completely missing the point. It is the subtle spiral that kills you, because your sensory perception tell you the wrong thing! This instructor is doing it exactly right.

@rinzler97752 жыл бұрын

@aviator_thomas2 жыл бұрын
And where was the death spiral?
@RaysDad2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call any of these attitudes a death spiral, though they could lead to a death spiral (accelerating downward, inside wing partially or fully stalled, probably near or above "never exceed" speed). Level the wings, idle the throttle, reverse-side rudder, slowly pull back stick. This is different from spin recovery mainly because you must level the wings.
@davidricca74282 жыл бұрын
Thats a spin, sir. Spiral implied nonstalled wings
@roytaylor78072 жыл бұрын
That would have to be the softest of unusual attitudes I have ever seen , I copped side slipping 90 degrees to the left then 90 degrees to the right once felt like I was coming over the top of a loop , power off stick right back, plane went berserk so put the stick neutral when I reckoned the aircraft was heading down hill just used normal spin recovery, I was in an aerobatic plane so had to demonstrate at least 10 spin revolution's as well , unusual attitudes are the best thing you can do to make Shure you become an old pilot I am now 78 😁😁😁

Squawk 7600 (radio failure), then I'd be looking for light gun signals from the airport tower to get cleared to land via light gun.... or I could've turned around and gone home to land carefully at my home airport, which is uncontrolled (no tower).
