Sorry, your exposure explanation is wrong; 6:05 you say "reading 0 meaning it's perfectly exposed in S-Log" is wrong. You don't expose Slog with EV meter, you have to expose it to 18% gray card and set zebras to 41 for Slog3 and 32 for Slog2 and then expose until zebras appear on 18% grey card, that's Slog exposed "they way it should be". Now, if you are shooting low light scenes and want to go for a step or few steps lower exposure you can do it and there are charts on how to set zebras for each exposure stop on 18% greycard or 80% white card. That is the most correct way to expose Slog and get consistent shots and whole dynamic range. Sony has it all explained in their docs. The "creative" way to expose Slog is to use Gama display assist and then you'll be able to see how the footage will look after conversion to rec709. Better way of doing it is to get a monitor (any decent one will have Slog-REc709 luts or you can upload them) and check on it how the footage will look after conversion. Don't get me wrong, your video is great :)

Micro 4/3 is actually a quarter of the size of a full frame sensor, not half. The length is 1/2 the size and height is 1/2 the size which makes the total surface area of the sensor 1/4 the size of full frame.

Holymoly now I understand! Basically the base ISO at which the A7IV is driven at are ISO 100 & ISO 400. Slog3 takes the base ISO that the sensor is driven at and raises it by 3V which has something to do with the gamma curve. I can't explain it technically without making errors. So ISO 100 in S-Cinetone would be ISO 800 in Slog3. ISO 1600 in S-Cinetone is ISO 12800 in Slog3. Also S-Cinetone seems to match the ISO levels of RAW photos. So this means that the famous ISO 12800 of the FX3 and A7SIII is basically an ISO 1600 image, which is two stops brighter than the A7IV and as clean as the ISO 100. This also means to match the ISO 12800 image in photo mode, you'd have to take an ISO 1600 photo in RAW

Loved the intro. Inspires me to want to film more and have fun with it. Your personal findings are interesting, I was always advised to over expose in slog. The thinking was that by over exposing, enough light is provided for the shadows, providing more scope to manipulate in post. I will have to experiment some more, as not really explored cinetone much.

Slog3 second base ISO depends on camera; on a7IV it's 3200 and on ZVE1/A7SIII/FX3 is 12800, IMHO for non really low light shooting i prefer the A7IV's base iso

Lesson here is, stop looking for the easy way and learn to use slog3, it's the future. Going forward, most cameras will have higher and higher base iso (talking about the fx30 with base isos of 800 and 2500).

I don’t have chrome on my new m3 pro MacBook. My videos are fine for the most part, the issue I’m having is dropped frames in the playback and export when the video is smooth in the browser window…. Any suggestions? 23.98 timeline and am my footage is 60 or 120 FPS

If you film 60 or 120 you need to edit in a 30 or 60 timeline. Otherwise you’ll have dropped frames.

For the full frame and APSC stuff, ALWAYS shoot in slog3 10 but. You can apply SLOG3 to S-Cine LUT in post of that’s what floats your boat.

Great workaround. I feel though it's not a 1/1 as the speed-booster expands the FOV like a lens, but the frame expands the image flat without curving (unless you're on a wide lens obviously). For $300 I'm just tempted to buy a used sony A7s for $400 for full frame stationary.

I have got a ZVE1 and find S Log 3 noisy, even with a 1.7+ over exposure, compared to S Cinetone. This surprised me as I thought with its higher base ISO it would be better.

Remember however that the Sigma 18-35 is a DX ie APS-C sensor size lens. That means the crop factor is not 2x but 1.5x for Nikon and around 1.6x for Canon. I have a Sigma 18-35 for Nikon, which means it is full frame equivalent to 18mm x 1.5 crop factor = 27mm on the widest and 35mm x 1.5 crop factor = 52.5mm on the longest. That means that the 0.71x focal reduction needs to be applied to those numbers instead of the ones printed on the lens. So on MFT it becomes a 27mm x 0.71 focal reduction = 19.17 mm to 52.5mm x 0.71 focal reduction = 37.275 mm. This also means that the largest aperture actually goes up a notch with f1.8 x 1.5 crop factor x 0.71 focal reduction = f1.917. This means that DX/APS-C lenses actually gets you back to your starting point, where FX ä/fullframe lenses do not. With the Metabones .64 XL adapter it gets extra interesting in the way that the lens gets both wider and about 5% more open. So with a f1.0 you get a full frame equivalency of f1.0 x 1.5 crop x 0.64 reduction = f0.96.

Agree - I gave up my full fram gear and changend completely to OM System. Nowadays the image quality of mFT flagship cameras like the OM-1 is good enough for nearly everthing. And nearly all other characteristics of mFT cameras are more useful in practice compared to full frame.

I know this is kinda of an old video, but I still wanted to point out one thing: If converted to REC709 correctly, the exposure and noise level of both the S-Cinetone and the S-Log3 footage should be almost the same at their base ISO with identical settings. As an example, if you shoot a Scene on the A7IV with SLog3, SutterSpeed 1/60, Aperture at F2.8 at the base ISO of 800 and convert that file using the Color Space Transform in Davinci Resolve, it should look nearly identical to a video of the same scene shot in S-Cincetone with SutterSpeed 1/60, Aperture at F2.8 at the base ISO of 125. I found this to not always be completly true (for S-Cinetone the base ISO seems to be producing images that are about a stop darker than S-Log3 at its base iso, so the equivalant to ISO 800 in SLOG3 would be closer to ISO 200 or 320 in S-Cinetone, not actually 125. But the dynamic range will be larger if exposed at 125). The histograms of the unedited files will look very different and that results in the camra showing an s-log flies as being overexposed, when it is, in fact, not. As for why there appears to be more noise in the S-Log3 Video, that largly comes down to the fact, that the Slog video contains more information in both the shadows as well as the highlights. Those information also include noise, especially at the low end. S-Cinetone on the other hand does not contain as much information and applies a much narrower color space as well as a stronger contrast. This results in there being less visible noise in the S-Cinetone files streight out of camera. But after transforming Slog into the same color space and gammut, as well as applying contrast to the image, the noise levels should be very similar. Very well explained, great content Zach. There is no reason to not start with an MFT sensor. Sometimes too much DOF makes filming difficult and risky losing the perfect shot. Everything is a learning curve. I still use my BMPCC4K and like it. 🎥🎬✅

If you came here because FCPX is laggy as hell and you just downloaded it, check the system settings and go to updates where macOS updates are shown. I had a codec pack showing there, after downloading it, FCPX went to be completely smooth.

You just saved me some money. Was just about to buy an entry level FF body. However, the bodies I can afford are quite limiting and then the lenses are larger. So, am thinking about the Panasonic G9 over the Canon RP. I have Panasonic lenses already.

I have the Panasonic G9 since 4 years now, at that time I decided to choose the G9 over the Sony Alpha A7III and I’m absolutely not disappointed at all ! Great body for the price and with a the Panasonic 25mm 1,7 you have a great combo for a little bucks !

Ironically I'm watching this on chrome on an m1 max. Question, can you also use the same extensions as chrome? Like shifting pitch on youtube videos, thru a downloaded chrome web browserr extension. Will those back up too?

Keep it up man. I started with Slog 3 for Videos but quickly got frustrated. One bg mistake I made was filming in 8bit instead of 10bit on my A7IV. Currently I am doing a lot in S-Cinetone b/c I just don't enjoy color grading that much. At least not yet....But great video and looking forward for more vidz. See you around.

Liked! Very helpful, was facing the same issue for the last two days. By I tried something simpler and that FIXED my issue. Thank God! I was going to follow all these instructions hoping this will fix my issue. But before doing that I just simply restarted my mac and boom the FCPX issue got fixed somehow. I usually don't shut down my mac for weeks and maybe that was causing the issue and it just needed a reboot. I hope this is helpful for someone.

Switched from MFT to Full Frame and then back to MFT just for the size and cost. The only real benefit full frame has over MFT these days is autofocus really I've never really had a problem in low light before but with AI noise reduction and upscaling getting so good it's almost a non-issue atp
