to add to my comment 5 years ago it's ashame heritage railway didn't take over it it would have made a great attraction to the town it could still be done the station still there signal box just renewal of the track level crossing gates and signalling 🤔

It would not be wise to thrash heritage steam locomotives on the 1 in 30 gradient. It would need three, possibly four locomotives in steam at any one time to operate a service. Then there is the cost of maintaining / renewing the swing bridge. I remember the R1's in 1948. Now that was a sound to be heard. Sadly it was not practicable to save this line.

Nice. A longish line compared to what is left now. KZbin tease me on home page with a few of this railway videos. Guess you did the Now, new shots at the end. I did this on holiday years ago but forgot to stick it back on KZbin version 2 I got from May 20201. Was on the old version. I thought the other day, some unused railway stuff I need to put on. Last lot of my things are old things I stuck on. My modern effort here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4CqZZd9hreer6ssi=xUb89xdg13fbsFdz

I lived in Folkestone in 1987 just off the Tram Road and I well remember the Orient Express going down slowly towards the Harbour Station. All closed after the Chunnel opened.

Hope he doesn’t get metal fatigue like Adam the character that is based upon him EDIT: I wasn’t making fun of that character (It’s my favourite in The stories of Sodor so why should I?) I was mentioning a tragic event that happened in that series

When I worked on S&T at VSC Clapham junction lots of signalling failures, ASE was 'Wrong man for the job'had to be paid off, replacement narcissistic told by Chairman BR Board that he was to be sacked in 6 months time unless failures dropped, bought in Man from Swanley led a task force team found lots of equipment faults reduced failure rate.

I had forgotten St. Johns still had 4 platforms in 1968. They also had a lot of seats which Petts Wood commuters (far more of them) noticed. I then arranged for a passenger service to stop one day and pick up 3-4 of them to drop off at Petts Wood. Those were the days.

Just look at those crowds! Ventnor never recovered from the loss of its two stations. The census to measure footfall was conducted om Christmas Day! Scandalous. I lived in Ventnor and the buses were scarce and expensive, very isolating for non drivers. The island's many non paved lanes are dangerous because of heavy traffic.

Brilliant. Although I was going down to the Island from about 1957, I was to young to remember ever using the section of the line, Shanklin - Wroxal - Ventor, which would have been a great experience, be it as a lad, or a man. I do wonder though, how good the Southern Vectis buses would have been at Ventnor, connecting the train station with the town, way down below.

This is about the year I was on them . Amazing really looking back getting rode on such old trains. My dad used to put his foot in the way of the doors until we were on. I still remember the rubbery smell from the doors. They ran much longer trains then - I wonder were they filled. They only seem to run 2 or 4 max now.

Nothing like travelling on a train from London to Bournemouth hauled by a WC class locomotive. This was when British Railways Southern Region was truly British Railways. It is a shame the Beeching closures went too far driven by the criminality of Tory ideology!

I note no shortage of passengers using the train service to Hayling Island. Good to see the BR Southern Region station colours etc. The 1960s were the final years when British Railways was truly BRITISH RAILWAYS.
