It's great how even more footage of the L&B as it once was keeps being found.

This version cuts out a lot of the film. I have a 16mm copy that I bought over 40 years ago that is over 12 mins long, whereas this is only 4 mins. My copy also has the British Transport Films of the last train - taken by L T Catchpole? Good to see it available for all us L&B fans and to find out who filmed it.

Edward Ward set off from Exeter with two 100ft reels of 16mm film a some time around 1935. The first 100ft was used between Exeter and Barnstaple and the second between Barnstaple and Lynton. He subsequently edited his film adding titles and sub-titles. This film was donated to the South West Film Archive by his son. The film which I have uploaded is a copy of the section between Barnstaple and Lynton. I have removed only one shot taken from Lynton Station of Countisbury Hill. I added two video shots at the end, which I took at Blackmore Gate

Mike Bayly Steam engines look best in black and white, the primary “colors” they were filmed in during their revenue service. About 1950 when I was 2 or 3, I saw my only working steamer. At least I saw one.

@@jockellis You only saw one in 1950? You must've lived a long way from the railway line!

@@jockellis Ah - in the States, that makes more sense. Here in the UK almost all trains were steam-hauled until 1960, with the last mainline steam not being withdrawn till 1965 (Wales), 1967 (Scotland), 1968 (England except London) and 1971 (Northern Ireland and London). Even then, narrow gauge steam continued on the national network until 1989, and industrial steam until 1994.

Please may I use your exceptional footage in a film I'm making about this line? I'd be most grateful!
