2012....the year a tragic wild fire burned thru the Mogollon Mts. changing forever areas of beauty in those mountains. Dangerous place to be in 2012...I notice you mentions fires there back then..

@@stephenvinson6474 No doubt, it was a scary experience being down in the canyon while that fire was burning above us. Incre it's incredibly tragic to see how much forest was wiped out from those fires.

Excellent video Matt !!! What an amazingly beautiful area !! New Mexico has so many hidden treasures. You're right about that Mountain House meal being a breakfast meal. I really like that particular one. What I do , is buy a freeze dried scrambled egg meal with bacon or sausage , then combine the two , mix and make a couple of breakfast meals , either in a burrito or just as is. ( I seperate each meal in a zip lock bag and bring the original empty rehydrating bag to rehydrate at camp ) Thanks for sharing !!

I know this is old but do you always use the top notches for the platform? I've always used the bottom ones. I wonder if that's the reason why I get sooty pots with bio ethanol
@TheSouthwestBackpacker3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! Old, but not dead! 😁 Yeah, I typically use the top notches for the burner plate to lock in to. The bottom one is there (I believe since there is no literature on it in the manual) as an option if using a different fuel. Might also be for spirit stoves other than Trangia or Evernew. You might experiment with the top notch and try it using the bio ethanol and see if you notice a soot difference. I also own the Trangia gas burner stove that is meant for the Trangia Storm Cooker Stove but this stove is also fully compatible with the Clickstand. I have to use the top notches when installing the stove plate using the Trangia gas burner as the bottom of the gas stove has just enough space and doesn't touch the ground. Using the bottom notch, the bottom of the gas stove runs in to the ground and doesn't keep the Clickstand straight and level. 👍👍
@bigpimpinbig13 ай бұрын
@@TheSouthwestBackpacker thanks for the reply. yes i always thought the top notches were for the gas burner but I might have just assumed. I'll do some experiments Thanks!
@bigpimpinbig13 ай бұрын
Ah interestingly you mentioned in the video the bottom notches are for the alcohol stove but then you used the top notches 😅 side question, do you also find the windshield a bit finicky? Also , why use the trangia gas burner, isn't it heavier than other gas stoves?I really like this clikstand system for alcohol though, the best I've tried so far. Hope I can get the soot down. Do you still use it?
@TheSouthwestBackpacker3 ай бұрын
@@bigpimpinbig1Yeah, I realize that I mentioned the bottom notch for the alcohol burner but then showed it in the top notch. Either position, I've had great results using Denatured alcohol or Methyl alcohol. No soot on the bottom of the pot. Yes, I find the windscreen to be very finicky! It does its job but it also falls off the hook stands when I accidentally bump it with the pot or my hands. I use the gas burner with this system when it is REALLY cold outside but I've only used it on rare occasions. I prefer the alcohol burner and use it 99% of the time. (If just boiling water, I prefer the Evernew Ti burner as it is FAST to boil water. For actual cooking or to preserve fuel, I prefer the Trangia burner.) I agree! The Clickstand Application Combo is still the best alcohol burner system out there! After all these years, I still use it and it's still my default cooking system.
@bigpimpinbig13 ай бұрын
@@TheSouthwestBackpacker Awesome thanks for clarifying! It's useful info, not many people are using this thing :) I did some tests and when I add 10% water to my fuel and use the top notches I didn't get any soot. I guess it will heavily depend on the fuel. I'm glad to hear you still enjoy using it. I think it's definitely an underrated system. A lot of people are using a Firebox Nano but this is infinitely superior in performance if you mostly wanna use alcohol. Thanks for the tip on the Evernew burner, I might get that for those trips where I just wanna go light and fast (boil water instead of proper cooking). Appreciate the video! Happy trails.

Great shots! Love seeing Ute Peak in the background. I know people have climbed the peak in the past, though now it is generally not allowed. I wonder if there was anything on the summit. Reading some of these comments, I'm excited to see a future backpacking video! I don't want you to spoil anything, but could it be in NW NM?
@TheSouthwestBackpacker7 ай бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, I saw Ute Pea in the background and was hoping to get a parallax view of it while flying over to the Shiprock. I know that you can ask permission to go camping at the base of Shiprock and if the Navajo Nation grants you permission in writing, you can overnight camp there. I was searching for a USGS disc or pile of rocks at the summit but I didn't see anything from the drone. So, my next backpacking trip is a place Iv'e backpacked to before but before my KZbin days. It's a photographers dreamscape! It's in NW NM and it's unforgiving in the summer months so Spring and Fall are ideal. It has no water source. It has no vegetation. There is no way to make a campfire in this place. I think you already have it figured out! 😄👍
