Saddest song I have ever heard - first leaned of it from Scorsese film about Dylan. Puts Georgie Jones in the back seat...

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. But any budding musician or performer should pause a count of four between the end of a verse and the start of the chorus. I think that the audience were a bit confused by this unanticipated hurry into the chorus each time. They missed it, then felt a bit miffed by it; and then only came weakly back into it towards the end of the chorus. Messy and surprising by such an accomplised and legendary performer like Liam. Otherwise, God bless him and rest him wherever he now abides. He really MADE this song into a classic in its own right, a song which had heretofore been looked down upon as the weak imitation of Loch Lomond, but Clancy and Makem really legitimised it artistically. God rest them now and many thanks to their memory for their ENORMOUS contribution to our (now dying) culture. We thank them for the beauty and happiness they gave us for a long time. ☘☘🙏🙏🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪

My gran heard this song when she married my grandad in 66, she seen them do it on the TV, it could of been this performance for all I know, my grandad is Irish and she was Mancunian, he knew the song but when she walked in and seen them play it she was an emotional wreck by the end of it , the most beautifully sad song
