Good luck with the longbow Michael! I've tried to convince Andrew to take one of his recurves out this season.

My guess is that the humidity level will also influence the thermal direction due to heavier air? What do you think?

Thanks. Good base of woodsmanship knowledge here; and, this is a great starting point in determining if a particular buck is even huntable in a particular location. God I love this stuff!

Thank you for these teachings I’ve had a tuff time understanding this topic but listening to you is helping me to beginning to get an understanding of hubs and thermal I’ve listened to many explain this and I always end up scratching my head in confusion the way you explain things I feel that with time I can understand to the fullest on how to hunt thermal hubs thank you so much for your content.

Literally the best examples I’ve seen on KZbin yet. Thankyou and what happens when you have a rising thermal on a hillside (with less pronounced drainages) that runs N&S With a west or NW wind where the thermals reach the top where it starts to flatten out. I would think with strong thermals coming up the E side meeting the wind coming up and over the top would cause your scent to drop down the opposite hillside where the thermals may still be dropping??

I drop milkweed all the time while scouting for the right spot to set up but as a whole I don’t really understand how far my scent may go before it loops around or lifts or falls. I don’t understand the big picture of wind moving thru the hills. I understand it flows like water but from my experience that’s not entirely true because of air temperatures.

Learn his trails he takes in the hub and if you look hard enough there is likely one spot where you have a advantage and that’s all it takes! It took me a year to find the right tree in 20 acres. Ended up in a tree right beside and creek where the water was flowing faster around a bend. The water pulled my scent straight down no matter the wind. He came from down wind the day he lost his life! It changed my hunting style forever!

so if the thermals consistently dropped would you hunt it on a N softer wind and stay farther south towards the mouth of the drainage, hoping you catch him dropping in to scent check the bottom ? Thanks!

If you could go out in the hills and create the perfect buck bedding area what kind of place would you pick ? What would you do to the place ? Hack and squirt ? What kind of place would be the perfect terrain ? South facing slopes, saddles, flat points, high, low, wide, narrow, oak, pine ?

Shane I hunt alabama and have noticed several bucks laid up or using the top of draws with the wind in their face coming up the draw instead of traditional wind over the back.

That was really interesting how they will use these rocky drainages. I'm in more rolling hills, with small drainage, but it wouldn't surprise me that they would use these as well to get to their beds. Do you think they would use these on their way down again ?

I guess im either missing something or I just dont understand....the head of both examples are located to the East and both Tails are located to the West. How are these different? Or is it West/East at the top of the screen? Im seeing it as West/East are represented as on the left of the screen.

The E and W on the maps are just showing what direction the head is facing. The map orientation is N to the top. In the E facing thermal hub example, the head is actually to the west side of the map but the head where everything is dropping is sloping down the east. In essence facing east. And vise versa for the W facing thermal hub. I hope that helps explain it a little for you.

Be careful scouting those bottoms. I was scouting a bottom once snd had a bunch of pines around me sndni felt the ground was soft bt i figured decomposed needless. I also noticed tons of them tipped out andnroot systems pulled up. Well while walking i felnright through the ground into a hollow waist deep snd never touched the bottom i got out and never went back. Since the i have hve been super careful.

So with the west being where the sun sets youd want to hunt that hub in the morning when thermals will be rising? And in the east where it rises you'd hunt that in the evening? When the sun is setting and thermals are falling? I guess my only worry would be that the bucks filtering down the west hub would catch a swirled scent from thermals rising unless the wind is an east wind?

The original mobile hunter used climbing stands, that’s all there was back then. Unless I’m in Kansas or Iowa, or those far western which I don’t hunt, my 2 climbers that I use, I can be just as mobile as you. Both my stands are 18lbs which is not a problem hunting in the hills. They are comfortable, they are quite and efficient and I’ve killed a lot of deer out of them. With that being said, mo hunting application is perfect. Just go with what makes you successful. I do use hang on’s but not as a mobile application.

I switched to a saddle set up last season. I don't think I'll ever go back to a climber, atleast in archery season. In rifle season I may still use the climber.

Just now beginning to venture away from farm field edges and into the world of "buck beds and thermal hubs". I recall hunting pheasants prior to having a dog compared to after having a dog. I suspect this will be much the same way in discovery. Appreciate your content.

Thank you! I'm from the flat agg of Ohio, but this year I've branches out to hunting Kentucky so I've been learning the hard way about thermals and wacky winds in these bottoms. My topography isn't as large as your examples though. The creek bottom is at 880ft and the ridge is at 960. Does that change anything?

I'm on some really flat land in north Texas, wooded thick stuff, with several dry creeks that come together. Almost zero elevation change, but I believe it's a thermal hub and I've been busted by bucks in there scent checking on their way out for the evening. I'm trying to find some advice there as well. The creeks are just enough of a dip, and with a bit of water are just enough to suck in the thermals I believe.

THANK YOU for mentioning how does use these! Everyone EVERYONE excludes doe usage and for those of us hunting management (required to shoot a doe before each buck) get no help with most KZbinrs. Practically no info out there for me to learn from. I can find bucks now without much trouble but I only see does when they’re running away from me while I walk in.
