Haha yes very true! Keeping things simple and working with what you have! The owners other Cat, the D2 parked in front of this D4 has an optional electric starter on it! This starter still starts the pony motor and then the starting procedure is the same for the diesel engine.

I remember most of the CATS back from the 1960’s and earlier all had these square shaped Caterpillar branded umbrellas on them, there were no federal regs for flat land machines to have a ROPS yet, so most were just open seat models. That umbrella was a life saver in the Texas summers, I used to run a 1965 model D-7 at a gravel pit in the mid 1980’s and that umbrella was really a must have to protect you from the sun.

Real good job you drained that old gas outta the carbs and feed pipes, as all the octane would've evaporated out of it long ago! Pumping that slush through the system would just mean a long hard time before she kicked up.
@jeffs_garage26 күн бұрын
Thank you for watching and yes, I figured if the carburetor was that bad the entire fuel system would be in similar condition and all need cleaned or I would be chasing problems for to long.

Nice work Jeff!! Love to see "old iron" running again... As inefficient and ungainly as this was to run, I'm sure back when it was newly purchased, and for many years after, it was a huge labor saving machine to the farmer that purchased it. What's most interesting to me is that the conversion retained the steering wheel, using the mechanism to activate/control a track brake for each drive wheel to control steering the machine. Funny how modern tracked machines have gone back to steering wheels as opposed to brake levers/differential steering like they've been using for many years. But go figure... A tracked machine from the 1930's with a steering wheel... Cool as hell. Again, great work! Glad to see this machine running again.
@jeffs_garageАй бұрын
Thank you for watching! Yes it’s neat to see how this conversion tractor differs from a purpose built crawler of the same era.
